password protecting shares in windows 2000 and XP
DosFreak replied to shassouneh's topic in Networking
Why not use permissions? Deny read permission and they will not be able to open it. -
Nero/CloneCD are most used here. EZ CD Creator if it's the only CDR program installed on the computer that I happen to use.

Quote: I have read messages after messages, in this forum, regarding all the tweaks and hacks you guy are doing to get your systems networked. This has got to be totally un-necassary because my network was working flawlessly at one stage. My stupid mistake has left me angry and frustrated now of over 5weeks with being unable to communicate with WinXP and Win2k properly. What was that big mistake i make? I removed the nic and replaced it with another after installing WinXP, thats what! When i replaced the nic i continued to have problems which i have not been able to resolve. No matter what do. I have followed every recommendation in these forums and nothing works. The motto of the story is, dont touch anything thats not broke. But how do you know if it's broke or not? Here you are with no network for 5 weeks and your stating your opinion on how unnecessary tweaking & hacking is? Replacing the NIC was not your problem. YOU are the problem. Quote: Think about it guys. Do you really think that MS requires users to go into the registry to delete keys so as to remove the lag time it takes to connect to another machine? No. MS doesn't "require" you to do jack. They also "commonly" frequently suggest editing the registry whenever you search their knowledgebase. So NO MS doesn't "require" you to edit the registry but if you want to fix/tweak a setting then you HAVE to. Quote: Do you really think that M.S. requires users to unclick on firewall, enable IPX and mess around with the network properties like that? ??? Didn't know MS made up people's own security policies. Just because MS leave's protocols out of their OS's and/or recommends other protocols does not mean that those protocols are ideal for the situation and "messing" around with network properties is required if your setting up a network. I don't know how the heck you do it....magic? Quote: Do you seriously believe that their intention is to get you to enable Simple networking and and frustrate you to no end before you get a simple peer to peer network working? Their "intent" is to sell an OS to the masses with these "HUGE" features, that being their overriding goal they tend to forget all of the smaller (while no means less important) things that make up the OS. This is bad. Quote: What kind of viable product would they have if the average user had to tweak their system to no end. Dos,9x,NT..All needed to be tweaked. Linux needs to be tweaked. Mac's need to be tweaked. There are various levels of "tweakage" but all to some degree require tweakage....and it never ends. UNLESS you buy a webtv/console....well even then. Quote: This doesnt make any sense. Is it a question of hardware compatability? Could be! Has anyone tried? Those users who have working networks the first time. Do they all pretty much have the same setup(network cards, sound cards, routers, nics? etc)? What brand of nics are those users using, who got their networking portion working the first time without having to load IPX? This is where we should be looking for our answers. Could one of those users who installed XP and got the networking portion working the very first time please list their configuration? No. It's the U-S-E-R in almost 95% of all situations. In networking that percentage drops quite a bit but it's still pretty high. Quote: Nope, i think there is a simple answer to all of the above. Its not called "LET TWEAK XP AND GET IT TO WORK". If tweaking is the answer then how can one explain that my network worked the very first time after installing XP? Everything and i mean everthing was set at default!!!!!!!!!!! Just set up my network thru the wizard and away she went. We even copied 800 mp3 files from my win2k system to a folder on XP without incident. Something that i cannot duplicate since i replaced my nic. A SIMPLE answer? There are tons of different network configurations that can be configured throughout the world with XP. Just because your network was so simple to setup does not mean that it should be/will be for everyone else.....and now you can't duplicate it because you replaced your NIC. ;( I think you need to redefine your definition of tweakage.....and you definetly need more experience in computer maintentance, marketing, and networking.

driver problem. Runs fine here.

Unfortunately no other duallie solution meets by requirements at this time.

I'll "switch" to XP when it doesn't lock my machine sometimes when I run a DX/OGL game. I do not have ANY problems in 2k. No BSOD's. No nothing...but this is the most major problem I've had with an OS. I did not have this problem in 2k. I've tried. 1. All versions of Nvidia drivers. 2. Hacking the 12.40's that come with XP with some Nvidia drivers. 3. Changing Nvidia driver options. 4. ALL bios options. Fastwrites/Sidebanding. 5. Switching out the integrated VIA AGP with the 4-in-1 6. Underclocking 7. Overclocking 8. PATCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHEESS 9. Using the opengl32.dll from 2k in XP Finally I gave up. Reverted back to XP drivers and am currently using "emulation" opengl. Except I'm not because I'm still using 2K because I plan on having a 2k dual-boot for a long time to come. Also from my tests some games work in XP that do not work in 2K but some games that worked in 2K do not work in XP. Due to the fact that MS rushed XP out and driver support is less than optimal (MS has to change enough to make most 2k drivers inadequate). 2k is my friend.

98/NT4 NT4 for net use.

Runs fine here in 2k/XP without compat mode. What's the error? I get a glide error on startup...but just choose D3D when your in.

Can you post your system?
-
Hmmmmmm.... If I had the inclination I'd go for it. A site such as this for Linux would GREATLY help out Linux.

Went through all 400 of my games in the last 2 days. So far XP seems to break alot of games that worked fine in 2k...but some of the games that didn't work in 2k work in XP. My XP list will be done soon. Still too preliminary to post comparison between 2k/XP.....let's just say that if you follow MS PR you'll be greatly suprised.

nixcompatible or LinuxCompatible are not registered names...
DosFreak replied to DosFreak's topic in Slack Space
Nah, I wouldn't mind. I'm far from a point in life where I could devote the time for a full-blown website of that magnitude. -
Exactly. The military is gearing up for AD but I don't expect a full implementation for about 1-2 more years.

Question about via 4in1 4.33 under WinXp
DosFreak replied to bonkers325's topic in Customization & Tweaking
The viagart in XP believe it or not may not be compatible with all chipset. Installing the VIA 4-in-1 is necessary in some cases. Oh and 4.34 has been out for awhile. Still only has .inf for XP. -
Wrong region. Get a region cracker from www.dvd-digest.com

Works fine with my GF3 and those same drivers. Try the 21.85's. Also download NvMax and look around in there.

or RPC in XP which you can turn off extremely easily. -

Arrrggghh! They are unmanageable and I don't even manage 'em! I bet they are a pain on your end Phillip but on this end too they are a mess! 1. A NT4/NT5/NT51 user only cares about their respective operating systems. Mingling all three OS'S together on the same screen is a terrible mess! 2. Reduce the font size. There is no reason that the name of the game should take up all the screen. 3. We need a comments button for each game. Too many people have too many systems that that can break a game. If said person posts to the board and lists it not working it shows up red on your list when it works PERFECTLY fine. It's happened many times before and will happen many times again. 4. We need to list the OS's that these games are supported in! 5. A downloadable version of the list. Either zipped in .html (easiest) or .txt. 6. needs to be sortable by OS/Manufacturer/working/not working.

You say it's a 0byte file when it's created? Try searching your registry for the file. Start/run/regedit Then go to find and type in the name!
