    problem playing .avi movie clips

How big is the file? Try to rename the file extension to .avi It might be that the movie clip is incomplete.

    It's official now... :(

Lol, I tried that IBM Test tool myself, came back with plenty of bad sectors. I could try to revive it, but I'm not going to be bothered to....My C: partition is NTFS incidentally I used the "fixboot" utility in XP recovery console few times before that chkdsk patch from M$ came out, supposedly fixing the issue. I previously got 3 or 4 times the BSOD with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE. Bye, bye IBM......here I come Seagate Oh, by the way....going back to W2K SP2 as well....

    Which Platform is better?

If you have infinite time on your hands to troubleshoot, install patches and tweak the living daylights out of your PC, then go for AMD. If you want stability at a (theoretical) loss of speed, go for Intel. I say theoretical, because all this huge flamewar going on about AMD vs.Intel CPU performance is, I think, a bit pointless: noone notices any slowdowns or performance boosts in daily tasks, using one or the other CPU...on paper things might look different, but for God's sake, who's gonna mind waiting 1.5 seconds for Photoshop to start up using an AMD, instead of 1.8 seconds with an Intel ???? (might be the other way around, but that's my point) I say that Intel is worth the extra money just because it has better platforms for their CPUs to run on.

    Startup problems

Might be due to USB or ACPI problems... What other hardware do you have?

    Undeletable files in recycle bin

With a DOS boot disk, that's what I meant...that's the whole reason behind it, in case the files are locked/in use.
  7. I can finally hope to put the wraps on this one...it happened to me already few times. Suspected the IBM 60 GXP at first, but then read the link on the front page @ http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315403&ID=315403 Too bad I decided to format my C: in NTFS, leaving everything else as FAT32...duhh. I think PM7 can convert NTFS to FAT32, I'll try it later today. The 60GXP seems to have failed the IBM's onw stresstest proggie, it reported bad sectors. Drive heading for replacement this week, what a pity it was only 4 months old. I hope I can exchange it for a WD 80 GB 5400 rpm (same price as a 60GXP 60GB 7200rpm). I say phuck IBM

    Unmountable_Boot_Device BSOD

Found a Seagate Barracuda ST360021A 60GB U/DMA100 7200u/min...a bit cheaper than the IBM. Any thoughts on this? Should it be a good buy?
  9. I'm looking for a decent webserver for home use. I intend to build a simple website and host it using some dynamic DNS service. I run XP Home, so I cannot install IIS 5.1 that comes with XP Pro... I'm thinking about that tiny AnalogX webserver.... Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks, I'll look into it...

THIS will be the game of the year !

Have you played Microsoft's online game called Asheron's Call? It's kinda old, but I saw it on a friend's PC and it looked very interesting...same huge a$$ maps, takes 1 day (realtime) to walk North to South. Has villages where players meet and exchange tips, weapons, magic items & stuff. Just check on EBay how much those crap items are valued at... Dunno, but the current gaming world (FPS) is stalling...nicer graphics, but there is no interactivity. Let alone the storyline. One thing is to play a deathmatch/CTF map in 16 players, another is to play realtime with another 2000. Imagine the possibilities...I'm not saying that Sony is going to get it right from the start, but the gameplay idea is what counts.

    Undeletable files in recycle bin

Sounds like a Temp file or directory...if you open the recycle bin, do you see any files? If yes, then select them and delete them normally. If no, then reboot in DOS mode and check your Temp directory for that file/directory and delete it. Also delete your Temp Internet files as well.

THIS will be the game of the year !

I know Doom 3 is gonna be a jaw-dropper, but the concept behind Planetside is what sets it apart. Maps with sizes of 3 sq.km, vehicles and hundreds of online players...the gfx don't look that bad either. So what if Sony produces it?

Uninstalled linux, now I cant get into XP

Boot from CD, then choose ®epair console, and at the prompt type "fixboot". This is how I get around my BSODs related to "Unmountable_Boot_Device"...caused by mcp.sys or something... However, I ran the IBM stress test on my 60GXP 60GB drive, and it reported bad sectors. I have to backup all my stuff and replace it before it completely dies on me This IBM crap is getting on my nerves...the HD is only 4 months old

First Build of Windows XP SP1 Intergrated

No it didn't... " It seems that there is a rumor going around that a new build of Windows XP Professional is going around... however, that is NOT the case! A new build of Windows XP for Tablet PC Professional, instead, was released. "

WinXP CDRW Software - Thoughts/Recommendations needed

Although the GUI needs some lift-up, Nero is still the app.of choice here. Burns ISO, BIN/CUE and NRG...what more do you need? The packet writing software seems to be the downturn of Ahead,Inc. I remember when they switched the build # from 1.3 to 2.0, all CDRWs recorded with 1.3 could NOT be used with 2.0. Pretty annoying, if you ask me, they seemed to flush the backward compatibility down the toilet.

    ATI Radeon 8500

YOu know what would be the "statement of the year"? "3DRealms boasting that a GF4-4600 is not good enough for Duke Nukem Forever" LOL

    Serving Windows Media files

I think Microsoft has some Media Producer software at the MediaPlayer homepage. It encodes many audio formats to .wma and streams it. Did you try that? I didn't check it in a while, it was a beta product back then...

I would sell that 1 GB SDram right now, before the price goes down again

    ATI Radeon 8500

From the reviews, indeed the performance floats around the one of a GF3 Ti500. Considering the price is more attractive, it should make a good buy. I'm also interested in compatibility with a KT266 DDR mobo and an Athlon C @ 1.33 GHz. I heard it had some problems with Athlons, were they fixed thru driver revisions? @ THC: Does it really matter what games I'm gonna play on it? I'm sorry, but we're heading towards a ridiculous situation: swapping GFX cards because one performs better than the other in certain games. Bleah! I just read Carmack's article on Doom 3 and GF4-MX...I think the specs for the GF4-MX were made public to him quite a while back, I don't see the need of him blasting out in public right now, claiming that the GF4-MX is "no good" for Doom 3. After all, what is Doom 3 ???? Just another game... I'm not gonna buy a graphic card just to get extra FPS or lighting effects in some singular game.

    Modem automatic answer ??

Did you enable the Fax service? Other than that, I don't know if XP reacts by itself to external calls, try to get some Telephony software. Did you get any with your modem?

    Geforce 4

"Any where from Sept to Dec 2002 M4Carbine on both nVidia NV3 and ATI R300 that my best guest" That is NV30 by the way...NV25 is the GF4 and NV17 is the GF4-MX. I still think that people who own GF2-MXes or even GF2 Pro/Ultra should wait till the price for a GF3 Ti500 goes down. The GF3 Ti500 beats the GF4-MX hands down, it has a second Vertex Shader and no bandwidth limitations (typical to the MX series).
