  1. OK i got the fonts to be loaded, they have to be in a subdirectory under /fonts, not just in the /fonts dir. Run fc-cache and it works...
  2. Zuti, same thing happened here: i copied all .TTF fonts from /Windows/Fonts to /usr/share/fonts, did the "fc-cache...", but i can't select them from anywhere. That Mozilla build looks weird, to say the least...makes everything look tiny, even if i run at 1024x768. Man Redhat 8 is a pain in the a$$ so far....

    ATI and Linux

ATI has official drivers for Linux, for the 8500 and so on...they support 3D but I didn't test them. Even before they were "released" you could use the ATI FireGL 8x00 drivers which had 3D support (XFree 4.2.x has only 2D support for the Radeon 8500).

What do I need to install GNOME 2.0.2?

Hmm, dunno how the install of Gnome 2.0.2 goes, I installed only KDE 3.0.3 on my box and it was quite an experience

    What's the point of WINE?

    Winelauncher? Shouldn't "wine setup.exe" suffice?

    Website software?

Well, I just obtained some webspace somewhere and I want to make myself a homepage The problem is I did HTML a long time ago, and although I can still use it, i'm not so hot about it anymore. I would like to buy some software that enables me to build pages using Themes or Templates, like really nice looking not some generic 3 colour stuff that comes with Frontpage 2002 for example. Some Javascript rollovers, image maps maybe, must have enough eye candy and be easy to use My g/f will post stuff there too, so it has to be appealing for her too, right? What do you guys recommend? I tried FP2002 and it kinda sucks, the themes are poor and any good ones I find on the net, you have to buy...forget that.
  7. Well, how can I upgrade my KDE to 3.0.3 for example? I saw different possibilities, including using a frontend for APT, that requires only a few steps to install and upgrade. Did anyone try it, or has easy ways to do this?

KDE 3.x.x upgrade on Mandrake 8.2

Look for Synaptic...i think there is a guide on pclinuxonline.com The RPMs are here: ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/apt/Mandrake/ Download all 4 of them, install Synaptic and you will have an Icon on the desktop (or in the menu, under configuration, package management). Don't forget to copy the "sources.list" file in /etc/apt.

KDE 3.x.x upgrade on Mandrake 8.2

Hmm, nevermind, I found it easier to download the RPMs from www.kde.org and install 3.0.3 alongside 2.2. WOW it looks good, esp. with the Liquid theme and the Conectiva Crystal Icons
  10. Ok courtesy of neowin.net: "From our most mighty source ooo, we have picked up some top information on Nvidias latest graphics chip, the NV 30. First some impressive information on how fast it is : whilst playing Quake 3 at 1280x1024 with FSAA 4x NV30 gets 2.4 times the score GF4 TI 4600 gets; Playing Doom 3, NV30 gets 3.5 times the performance Ti4600 shows; NV30 gets 3 times more points over at 3dmark 2001 then that ol' card 4600. Also, the pixel fill while using AF x2 is 2.7 faster then 4600, and NV30 can run 200 million triangles per second, which is quite impressive. Finally : The banwidth on the new board gets to the speed of 48GB/sec using DDR-II that will run at 1Ghz; but it's in doubt that samsung will supply them any time soon. Sounds like a very, very nice card." The banwidth on the new board gets to the speed of 48GB/sec using DDR-II that will run at 1Ghz OMFG!

    MSN Messenger Client

Quote: Have you tried MSN Messenger for Linux http://amsn.sourceforge.net . I've never used it but alot of people like it. Hey that looks nice too, I installed it today morning and it worked perfectly. I guess it's a matter of taste now, the functionality is better in AMSN, but the looks are owned by GAIM

    Looking for some apps...

You might want to check www.ravantivirus.com for a very good suite of virus scanners. XMMS does the job, supports skins what do u need more? Did anyone try the "write-to-disk" plugin while listening to a Shoutcast stream?
  16. First again, mwhaaa! Anyway...I will post all the problems I encountered with different distributions/hardware/software hoping that someone can help out. I tried it on Redhat 7.3 and Suse 8.0, both Netscape and Mozilla (1.0 downloaded from the web) display the fonts awfully on many webpages. Either too small, or text is out of positioning (rarely, but annoying). Which fonts should I use, because I tried all the default fonts that came with the distro and still no good. Even if KDE is using antialiased fonts for the desktop, the text on webpages and such is still very low quality.
