WinXP Pro or Home edition? Which is better? And for what thi
Palos replied to pr-man's topic in Software
Or maybe because it's also cheaper??? Home users don't usually need SMP, and you can get all the Pro features (security) using a 3rd party freeware usually If it comes down to my pocket, I'll go for the Home Ed...or even better, the Pro OEM -
Because maybe you were drunk, got pissed off and smacked your PC around for a few times... Or maybe you got just a low quality drive...MTBF of 2 weeks, LOL.
-
Dudes...I was pissed, ok. I didn't however point fingers at anyone, didn't blame anybody. I am free to ***** about things as much as I like, and as long as I don't take it on someone in particular, then leave me be. Eddie, man...as far as the post wording goes, you agree that you would rather see a very detailed, long post, including all hardware specs, driver versions and stuff rather than a simple "my $hit ain't working!" and PERIOD. Clutch, peace man... What happened to #ntcompatible on Undernet, if anyone knows? Is Ekstreme still around? How about a revival of that IRC channel? People could get help faster, more interactive...

Lol, even an original CD can be scratched...

"So, next time, try not to take it personally, because if you do get mad you might just piss off the one person that could help you next time." Could that be you, by any chance? Sorry but I've been on this board for a while, actually a month more than yourself, so I've seen quite a few interesting situations. And if I get pissed off, it's my problem, not yours...I don't see how it can affect you in any way.

I got a 60 GB IBM Deskstar 60GXP 7200 rpm, it kicks ***. Along with my old Maxtor 20 GB 5400rpm (now used as backup and ftp storage)
-
Is that the USB model? I got the 1200 CU, but i didn't try it yet in XP. I almost threw it out of the window after trying to convince ANY flavor of Linux to recognize it, btw.

Was that a buffer underrun? What board you have, and did you install all UDMA drivers for the IDE controllers (if it's a VIA them you must). Burning at a lower speed, that could have helped probably too...
-
No the 640 is not there, but there are other models available: ftp://ftp.epson.co.uk/pub/uk/drivers/printers/inkjet/pc/winxp/ Since XP was officially released just today (not yet actually, since the US is always behind ), expect to see drivers appearing on manufacturers searchpages from now. That's if they have them ready in the first place, lol.

Yes there are a lot of BIOS updates released this last week that address these particular Eventlog ACPI entries. Up[censored] the BIOS will do.

It's amazing how I had almost the same problems about a month ago, and I got only 2 replies to my 1000 words post....I hope this board will not end up appearing prefferential to some people, and to others not. Sorry but I'm really pissed off...

Don't forget the most important item of all: the FLOPPY DRIVE

Or you can reinstall NAV (if you didn't register in the first place). One thing about the whole Norton stuff...It is a pain in the 4$$ to uninstall, grrrrr.

You know what? I bet that if Luna was a Linux Window Manager, just like KDE and GNOME, then every one of you would praise it endlessly. Im sorry to dissapoint all of you Linux lovers out there, but the OS kinda sucks. You cannot expect it to penetrate the Homie User market in this state. I cannot stand tweaking it anymore, compiling my custom kernel in order to recognize, let alone USE, a simple IDE CD-RW or a DVD-Drive in their full functionality. I am not praising Microsoft either for their OSes, but theirs at least DO what they are supposed to do with minimum of hassle. Security has to be balanced with User Friendliness, and if you ever did a bit of programming in your lives, then you will understand my point. The perfect OS does not exist at the moment, it's just that some are better at some things than others.

Did you buy the PC somewhere in Hawalli by any chance?

Leaving aside the tragicomic sound of the subject line, I would like to know what you guys make out of the whole thing? Opinions of any kind are welcomed, the web should be a free speech environment, where if you protest against the airstrikes you won't get laid off by your employer (just read it on CNN yesterday). So much for the whole free speech debate. Let it flow guys...

Why is there an option for "I use WInXP's built-in stuff" in a CDR Software poll for Windows 2000 ?

Hey there...noticed this when switching to DirectX mode in Counterstrike. I always played in OpenGL, I wanted to give it a try in DX. Well, the performance blows majorly...i got 31 FPS compared to 72 FPS in GL (limited though by my config script - online gaming optimized). I thought I'm not seeing it well, so i rebooted, fired up CS, changed to DX mode again, and same thing happened...around 25-30 FPS, lol. I don't remember having this problem with the previous version (the non-WHQLed one). Any ideas?

If it does have anything to do with PPPoE, then you can try this link: http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/ It works with 2000/XP, and you don't need the access software given by your ISP. As far as Hardware "drivers" go, I have no clue about that particular type of modem. Is it internal, external? Do you need drivers for it at all? Lol

Are you using an onboard soundcard?

That's exactly why they targeted big media corporations, cos they could count on the fact that this thing will be blown out of proportion. On the other hand...did anyone think what would happen if you genetically combine the anthrax (or any other deadly bug) with the common flu? Such artificial mutations can be achieved in your Goddamn house! (if fitted with a level 4 biohazard facility). These things are much more dangerous for the human species than nuclear weapons, people!! They can be obtained legally by almost anyone who pretends to be a scientist, let alone the eastern european connections. And, one last question: do you really think this conflict will ever end? I personally don't
-
Well, Anthrax has two main variants, the cutaneous and internal. The cutaneous one is the most frequent (90-95% of cases), but not as dangerous as the other one. The internal has a mortality rate of over 90%...antibiotics such as pennicilin work better on the first variant though. Most of the time the disease is not discovered until the later stages, when it's very difficult, if not impossible to cure. This is because it might resemble pneumonia (if spores got to the lungs) or enterocolitis (if found in the stomach). Clutch is right, the spores reside in the earth, but remember that to reach humans, they need the extra step (animals). That's why farmers who own cattle or butchers are the most exposed. At least so far the thing is not contagious (human to human). Well....those are the "known" variants of Anthrax. Due to genetic engineering there can be an infinite, more potent variations around (unknown variants have been diagnosticated in Africa some time ago). Put it this way...It sucks!
-
I have the feeling that we are going to witness an increase in the number of cases in the next 30 days. The reason behind it is that the poeple who got it now, have been exposed to the spores at least a month ago. Incubation time for humans can be up to 60 days, probably less for genetically modified variants (possibly halved to 30 days). The question is how many people got exposed without knowing it in the past month, until the media picked up the subject...

Digital output has nothing to do with the front/back speakers. You can get a quadrophonic setup to work even over an analog out. Must be the LiveWare settings. Did you install all the registry settings for all possible speaker setups? Did you run any EAX demos?
