Hi again, does the board software allow uploads (up to 256 KBytes) so we can upload pictures and screenshots w/o owning webspace? That would be cool, cos we can make a "My Desktop" thread (and of course, the usual flaming "my theme is better than yours",lol).

First Post! And, anyone know of fast RH mirrors?
Palos replied to clutch's topic in Everything Linux
I have the ISOs of Valhalla (RH 7.3) and Mandrake 8.2, but my upload speed is far from "fast"> a mere 128 kb/s which translates to 16KB/s -
I was looking at it earlier, but I postponed the dload until I reboot in *nix. I still had to play some CS

If you got the Logitech Quickcam USB to work, then please explain how you did it in detail, the apps u used, distribution, kernel build, additional patches, etc. Remember that this is not a Windows forum, where everyone takes for granted that the others KNOW which "button" to push, and where that "checkbox" is I personally could not get the Logitech USB cam to be recognized in the first place, because the USB controller of my board is acting weird. I have an Asus P4S533 (SiS 645DX chipset), and it seems to conflict with the SBLive! because when the Cam is plugged in, I get no sound....

Well, on a more serious note: I have a Hercules 3DProphet 8500LE and it seems to have only 2D support with the "new" XFree 4.2.0. There are some rumours that the ATI FireGL 8x00 drivers WILL work with the 8500 since they both have the same core (the R200), however I could not get them to work Did anyone try this and had better luck?

Phillip, please post as a story, since it's pretty serious ...so much for trusting Opensource The link is here: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/pab-01.08.02-000/

Boohoooooo......the hardware forum is not a virgin anymore

The site looks great, the board theme looks good too. I say that the site needed a face-lift, esp. since we're in the XP-age For more than 2 years it's been the same, so this change is welcomed. Good job Philly boy!

I think I saw an "choose Avatar" option in the Profile Section What up with that?

Nice look, how about a new shiny 3D "NTCompatible" logo?

Hi all, I have an Enermax 350W PSU (dual fan) with ActivePFC. It really shines on all the lines, delivering more than default values, but that's not my problem Once in a while it makes a humming noise, almost like a buzz, hard to explain, it comes in cycles. I observe the voltage on all lines thru Asus Probe and I see no changes while it buzzes. The only problem is that the noise becomes quite annoying after a while...it's not loud but it surely can be noticed. Do any of you have this PSU and experienced anything like this? The actual model is "Enermax EG365AX-VE ActivePFC"...And what's the real difference between ActivePFC and PFC, I kinda know the answer but Im not sure...
-
No it's not the fan, the whole rig is 2 weeks old, the fans cannot have worn bearings yet It is a sound coming FROM inside the PSU.

How much?

Hehe, bias is ok as long as you're presented with both sides of the coin. Personally I would like to see the issue from more than just one point of view. Theregister/Inquirer are also too Brit biased in my opinion, but it's just funny to see how some people get stressed about longterm disputes between "The Island" and "The Continent, a.k.a €urope) The above story is all what the post is all about, it just happened to be in the Inquirer. Can anyone therefore argue against the "piece of news" instead of the "source" or the "bottom paragraph"?

What's so unreliable about it?

Use a software firewall, like BlackIce or ZoneAlarm. Easier to use than Norton Firewall, and it places everything under stealth mode unless u allow it, basically it overcomes the 3way handshake "feature" of the TCP protocol

What can 5Hz extra bring as image improvement? I can only see shorter lifetime of the CRT If framerate in games bothers you, then turn off "vsync" in both OpenGL and DX, so u're not limited to 85fps when the monitor runs at 85Hz.

Man but that rotates at 7000rpm, compared to 3000max for the Intel retail combo. I am very pleased with this setup, going from an AMD Athlon 1.33GHz (temps 49 and more idle, LOL) with an Alpha PAL6045 (at 5k rpm i think). I say the OEM heatsink/fan do a great job for "cheap" and quiet combo. It is within a few deg. of the mighty AVC Sunflower on moderate overclocks, coupled with ArcticSilver III. Can't beat that. Overall with my new system: P4 1.8A Boxed Asus P4S533 Hercules 3D Prophet 8500LE (ATI Radeon 8500LE w/128 MB) Aopen 32x/12x/48x SB Live 1024 XGamer Value Seagate Barracuda ATAIV 60GB 7200rpm (damn quiet too!) Enermax EG365AX-VE ActivePFC I was a bit scared to dump the NVidia bandwagon for the Radeon8500, but I must stress that I have absolutely NO problems with both Hercules retail drivers, or with the new ATI Catalyst series. Somehow I have the feeling that the textures in games look better on the Radeon than on any Nvidia I had (except GF4). I had of course problems with the new rig, like the speed of the CDRW, it is too fast, LOL. It sounds like a plane taking off when it reads at full 48x! I am using a proggy (CD Bremse) that limits the max read speed (thus loudness), and I limit read speed at 32x. Other than that...a weird buzz coming out of the Enermax 350W PSU at regular intervals, sometimes it doesn't do it for hours. System could be faster than now, cos Im still using an "old" PC2100 DDR Samsung stick. The board supports DDR333 and DDR400 (unoficially, but the ratio is there), but the prices are kinda high for my liking right now.

@Phillip: Yep For 2 years now...

From experience I can tell you that the Intel retail heatsink/fan will suffice for a safe o/c of an 1.8A. I have this CPU on a Asus P4S533 board and I can push it to 2.4GHz by enabling VEN1 and upping the Vcore +0.025. Perfectly stable, temps between 43C idle and 49C under load. I also don't have any case fans, except the intake/outtake duals on my Enermax PSU. Case temp is around 37C max. I also don't have Arctic Silver or such applied on the CPU, so if u do that it will shave a few deg. as well...

Excellent...the new forum will boost new life into the boards which, all of use agree , they kinda got too static for my liking... Phillip, remember I asked u about the IRC channel? I'm still up for it, we just need to advertise it a bit. Online realtime help is better than thru a board, or at least is a good complementary solution. Let me know how things are shaping up on your side!
