For a good instructional guide on what each service does and which you can remove go to: http://arstechnica.com/tweak/nt/ntservices-1.html

Disregarding the "free" question and going back to the original one about the difference between the pre-Feb 17th 2195 build and the store-bought versions, it turns out there is actually a difference. Apparently after the original release of the 2195 build back in December a number of licensing issues arose in the video drivers included with Windows 2000. To keep from having to deal with this issue or pay any royalties Microsoft opted to remove them. Some were replaced with less than perfect alternatives and some were not replaced at all. For this reason a number of people have reported that after they install the store-bought Win2k, they're video stops working. I haven't talked to anyone who this has happened to but I've seen posts about it on a few different BB's. Its kinda funny that the store-bought version is actually worse than the pre-Feb 17th version. Guess I'll be holding on to my old copy for a bit longer. Just an interesting bit of info I thought you might be interested in knowing..........

Wow, thats some real b.s. I've finally got my Win2k Pro system running the way I want it and was just about to install IIS 5, but if what you're saying is unresolvable I just may forget the whole thing. Anyone know if it would be possible to install the IIS 5 from the Win2k Server CD onto Professional so that all the features would be enabled??

Figured out why ASPIchk was generating those errors. It seems that you can't run it in the same folder as the ASPI .dll & .exe files. If you have all the stuff in the same folder it will the detect those .dlls first and will tell you that the files are "installed correctly" but that they can't initialize. As long as you run ASPIchk from anywhere else it should work fine.

Any way to force hardware to use a different Interrupt Request?

I followed the exact instructions provided with those same ASPI 4.60 drivers and I got that EXACT same error msg when I ran the ASPI check. I've removed the files and tried it twice but still have the same problems.

Hmm...Seems my computer has an IRQ 9 sharing conflict as well, even though it says all devices are working properly. Here's what I get: Resource Device IRQ 9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller IRQ 9 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI NIC With 3 people reporting conflicts on the same IRQ and all of us getting the hard freezes Im starting to wonder if this just might be the problem somehow. Could this possibly be the cause anyone?

I think the thing thats important, and the reason I believe these antitrust cases should be thrown out, is WHY Microsoft's OS is the most popular. Its not due to unfair business practices or some underhanded tactics, but because the simple fact is that Microsoft Windows is the best overall OS created to date. While OS's such as Linux, FreeBSD or Sun may be the best choice for admins looking for the ultimate stability, Windows offers the best combination of features for the average computer user. I think we can all agree that there's plenty of room for improvement, but so far no other company has presented such a powerful and easy-to-use OS as Windows. Until someone does the government should keep their corrupt hands out of computer world. If they spent a little more time fixing real problems we'd be a lot better off. Well, there's my 2 cents. -
You might try disabling AutoPlay for audio cd's using Tweak UI for Windows 2000. Just uncheck the Play Audio CDs Automatically option under the Paranoia tab. If you don't have TweakUI you can get it at: http://www.jermar.com/tweaki2.exe

Actually, its highly likely that somekind of U.S. Government restriction on the internet will at least be attempted in the future. Not sure about all that other BS, though. Looks like another jack@$$ trying to get us to start a chain letter.

I wouldn't write it of so quickly. You're best bet would probably be to revert back to NT 4 until you purchase a faster system. Windows 2000 has many advantages, but they won't be fully realized without a much faster computer. My base recommendation would be a PII 300 with at least 128MB RAM. My second system is a PII300-192MB RAM and the its been running great.

You might also wanna check out http://www.pandasoftware.com/ They have just been awarded the highest ICSA Cleaning Certification level of any antivirus program. It is also unique in the fact that they have a version specifically built to take advantage of the new features of Windows 2000. They provide the same weekly virus updates and it looks like a very promising product, especially now that AVP has failed to come out with a Win2k compatible product.

I can't figure out why by neither program works for me. I have the latest ASPI 4.60 installed. When I stick a DVD in my drive and open either program it acts like there's not even a disc in the drive. My drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1102 and I'm running Win2k Pro 2195.

I've had win2k do that exact thing to me once so far, but my roomate has had it happen a number of times. Seems to not matter what hardware you have since I have a PII300 system and my roomate has a PII450; both running Win2k Pro 2195. KnYnE & ewaite, do either of you happen to use Stardock's WindowBlinds? I just found out today so I haven't time to test it, but it seems that a bug in WindowBlinds can cause IE to pause on closing windows for 5-10 seconds. This might possibly be causing my system to lockup. Either way nothing outside of hitting the reset button can get me out of the lock.

As stated at the 3dfx website "the Voodoo3 offers full 30 fps MPEG-2 Playback with no dropped frames, and Soft DVD support for all major CODECs." I have the Voodoo3 2000 PCI card and was wondering if this meant that I could use it to decode DVD movies or at least assist in the decoding? I do not own a decoder card btw. If not, then what exactly is the Digital Video Port on the card used for? I've dried the various software DVD decoders but none of them have the same quality. I haven't been able to figure out why it is that DVDs played fine back in win98 and now there is so much trouble in Win2k. Thanks for any help.
