Here's something I read in another forum I visit. Note that I haven't tested this (yet), so I can't confirm if it works. []s Badaro Quote: Originally posted by Jedwin Hey, so, I've tracked down the problem with Chocobo races under NT/2000/XP. The problem looks to me like a NULL pointer dereference. Specifically, they are doing: Code: mov ecx, dword ptr [0e626d8h] mov dx, word ptr [eax + ecx + 0186b8h] There are no other accesses to the variable at 0e626d8h, which essentially, since it is in the uninitialized data segment, means that it is a NULL pointer. Under Windows 95/98, for no apparent reason, the pages corresponding to the addresses from 0x10000-0x20000 are mapped to something which looks to me like 16-bit code. So, since the offset puts it safely into that region, it doesn't crash. Now, it look like maybe this means that it has a bug under Windows 9x, but since I don't know how this value should be set, I couldn't fix it to correctly set this value. But, under the assumption that the values that are getting pulled in are just garbage (which again, appears to hold under Windows 9x), I did the next best thing. I changed the 0x186b8 to a value that puts it inside the FF7 executable itself, so that it still has some values there to read. I'm not sure of the best way to distribute information on this patch, but if anybody cares to make this change on their own and try it out, the following instructions should suffice: First off, copy ff7.exe to ff7.bak or whatever. Now, I'm using an unpatched FF7 executable plucked from the Eidos Platinum Collection version of FF7. The file size is 5820416, crc32 is E79D5195, and md5 sum is e1a6875b37540d616d34f14102d9c2fc. If you have the same executable that I do, the change you need to make is at offset 3641e6, otherwise, you'll have to search for the right bytes to change. So, now, open up ff7.exe in your favorite hex editor, and find the bytes Code: b8 86 01 00 . Again, if you have the same version of the executable that I do, you will find these bytes at 0x3641e6 from the beginning of the file. Change them to Code: 00 00 50 00 . That is sufficient to get the chocobo races working on my machine. (Note that there may be other difficulties associated with running FF7 under Windows NT/2K/XP, though many of those are solved by the Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft.)

Quote: the thing is, I think somewhere I read that servicepack1 for WindowsXP disables playback of movies with certain codecs. Negative. I have XP SP1 and all codecs work, including DivX (both 3.11a and 5.02). []s Badaro

Quote: hello people, i was wondering if is there any application that allows me to extract ONLY the audio from a video with .avi, .mpeg, .mpg....extension if any of you know a program like this one, please let me know. thanx TMPGEnc has a MPEG de-multiplexer built-in, and you can use VirtualDub to extract the audio from an AVI file. http://www.tmpgenc.net/ http://www.virtualdub.org []s Badaró

Quote: give some more of your system specs. one workaround for having to use cd's is to install CD1 normally, after the install is complete, copy (from the GTA3 CD2) the AUDIO folder and the two files: drvmgt.dll and secdrv.sys to your c:\program files\rockstar games\gtaiii\ folder, now install the version 1.1 patch and then use a version 1.1 no-cd crack. this is what i do so i don't mess up my $50 GTA3 cd-set. Kinda off-topic, but have you tried Daemon-Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.com)? It's one of those "Fake CD-ROM" programs, but works wonders for me. Instead of using my CDs to play, I make images of them in my HD using BlindWrite or CloneCD and run them thought this program. This way I can protect my CDs, without having to resort to cracks. Of course, this requires plenty of HD space, but that's what my 40GB is here for. []s Badaro

Quote: Can I use Voodoo 2 3D-accelerator PCI (12 Mb) and Voodoo 3 2000 AGP (16 mb) together in same computer? If I can what advantage I´ll have? ;( AFAIK you can, but there's no advantage at all. []s Badaro

Quote: Can anyone shed some light on this issue? If it means replacing Norton with something else (like PC-cillin 2002), that's fine. If not, then the alternative is to say ba bye to Roxio. I'd say kill Easy CD Creator. I've had my fair share of problems with that software, and my system has been running far more smoothly since I switched to Nero. []s Badaro

I've got an Intellimouse Optical (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouse/io_info.asp), and I'm having a little trouble with Q3. The mouse itself and the two main buttons work well, the issue is with the wheel and the extra buttons: when I start the game they're working just fine, but after a while they stop responding. Any ideas? []s Badaro

Quote: Badaro - I wasn't referring to the "Enhance Pointer Precision" option, as that is there even if you don't install intellipoint Sorry, I didn't know that. I guess I'm a noob with Intellipoint. []s Badaro

Quote: They stop working after you configure your controls. For some reason when you do that, directinput gets enabled and somehow disables the extra buttons. Only way to fix it is to restart Q3 and not configure controls. I did a little testing based on what you mentioned and I found out that: - When I enter the game, without messing with the controls, the wheel works fine, but the extra buttons don't; - After I try changing the controls, the roles reverse: buttons work, wheel don't. I'll test ConQueso's suggestion later. BTW, Dazultra2000, I DLed the latest Intellipoint today and I have the "Enhance Pointer Precision" option. []s Badaro

Quote: I don't see the Security Settings for folders in this Windows XP. I know Windows 2000 have it though. I believe you need to disable "Use Simple File Sharing" (AND use NTFS ) to see the Security tab. []s Badaro

A very occasional BSOD, apparently caused by something with my the Promise ATA-100 controller. Not sure if is related to drivers or hardware. I'd like to add that I don't know if this error is XP specific, as I wasn't using this controller in my Win2000 days. []s Badaro

Here's the MS Technet article for this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q283649 Basically, MS changed added a few restrictions to ACPI in Windows XP (to improve stability), and some older BIOSes do not conform to those. This probably won't cause any major problems, and should be fixed by a BIOS upgrade (worked for me ). []s Badaro

What do you consider the best computer game ever made?

Starcraft. So many years playing it and it's still a lot of fun. []s Badaro -

Quote: Originally posted by clutch To be fair, I have seen this one. But occasionally, I saw it in Win2K as well. It appears like whatever process you had using that file seems to hang around and keeps a lock on the file. But, when you look for the process that *would* do this, there isn't one to be found. I tend to see this more on files that I have expanded using the built-in ZIP decompressor. This happens to me quite often. One question: Sometimes I get a variation of this problem where the file continues locked even after a reboot. Anyone else has experienced this? []s Badaro

Quote: Hey. I just installed VMWare evaluation, just to be able to play Day of the Tentacle. But I have a problem. I have gotten the sound to work on the virtual machine, which runs Win98 SE, but in DOTT, it doesn't work. According to VMware, the virtual sound card on the guest system has the address 0x220 and the IRQ 7. When I enter those settings in the DOTT configuration, I still don't get any sound. Also, DOTT says "Warning: EMS detects less than 2 megabytes", and thus the game runs kinda slow. A way to fix that would be very good too, but most of all, I just want sound. Thanks. A side note: If you just want to play DOTT, ScummVM is probably a better (and cheaper) solution. []s Badaro

WinXP CDRW Software - Thoughts/Recommendations needed

I'd go with Nero. EZCD5 has given me a lot of trouble. []s Badaro -
Quote: I wonder why they made this... I believe the idea is to use this program to allow playing those games in different plataforms (MacOSX, Linux, I've heard of a Dreamcast port... ). []s Badaro

Try ScummVM. I got DOTT to run very well using it. []s Badaro
