    Connecting Hds: Best way?

I have 2 ata-100 Hds and 1 dvd-rom drive and cd-rw drive. I do have room to use a ATA-100 promise Ultra100TX2 controller I have if need be but would it be better and faster performance wise to have both HDs on the mobos primary channel since the mobo supports ata-100 and have the dvd-rom drive and cd-rw on the secondary channel? Thx

    Connecting Hds: Best way?

This is what my manual says Ultra100 TX2’s two IDE connectors each support a master/slave combination of IDE devices, including Ultra ATA, EIDE, IDE, Fast-ATA, and ATAPI. Devices of different standards can be connected to Ultra100 TX2 without performance degradation, due to the independent programmable timing registers in the controller’s design.

    Connecting Hds: Best way?

well the reason I was thinking like I was is because under XP I get crappy performance with my HDs on the controller cards. I think its an SP1 issue. I currently have it setup like you suggested and thats why im looking to switch. Would promises site tell me if the card would support PIO?

    Connecting Hds: Best way?

admiral couldnt I put the two cd drives on the Promise ata-100 controller each as a master and then put the two HDs on the mobo as master and master with the controller card and two channels on the mobo I essentially have 4 ide channels to work with
  6. yeah I have this exact same issue and my mobo is using the AMD-761 chipset (8K7A) Im running my HDs on a controller card and I noticed if I use promises version 34 of their XP drivers CPU utilization runs at 10-14% but I have skipping in mp3's etc.
  7. because im using a promise at-100tx2 controller card for both my HDs?
  8. i did waiting for a response

    Connecting up HDDs and CDs

Guys I have the same situation as the poster I have 2 ata-100 Hds and 1 dvd-rom drive and cd-rw drive. I do have room to use a ATA-100 promise Ultra100TX2 controller I have if need be but would it be better and faster performance wise to have both HDs on the mobos primary channel since the mobo supports ata-100 and have the dvd-rom drive and cd-rw on the secondary channel? Thx sorry about asking in this thread but I did not want to create a whole new post about the same topic
  10. I dont get it. If I use XPs default driver, it 50%+ cpu utilization but no stuttering in mp3's. However if I use the 34 promise winXP driver I get 13% cpu utilization but stuttering while playing mp3's What the hell
  11. ok WinXP native driver: 47% cpu utilization Promise Version 34 XP driver: 14% Promise Version 39 XP driver: 53% Geez not left with many options LOL guess I will stick with version 34 unless someone has a better one for me.
  12. well I just installed the 34 drivers off promises sit and now CPU utilization is down to 14% Getting better. I might try the 39 next
  13. well I running the drivers XP put in after install. I will download the latest ones that are on the promise site and see wsup

  15. Their site has once dared april 2002 but im sure I saw a newer one somewhere else. Thx
  16. Ok win2k shutdown takes like 20 secs. All my 3d games takes between 10 to 20 secs to exit back out to desktop after quit is selected. Mouse is jerky and sound is jittery sometimes when playing mp3's and games. Sp3 is installed, dx 8.1 agp miniport etc. any ideas?

    Ok Win2k problems

no this is a fresh install. have 2 games and icq 99b (no spyware there) LOL any ideas? I have not disabled any "services" yet. any suggestions on that as well?
  18. Well I just installed win2k and installed SP3 and then went through the fiasco of downloading and instaling the new promise driver to fix the conflict between my ultra100tx2 and SP3. Well now all is done but I am getting hiccups in audio when playing mp3's and I never had this with my TB Santa cruz before under xp or win2k. I ran XP in ACPI and that is what I am running Win2k in right now. Does Win2k have a problem with ACPI? I know when i ran ACPI under XP it rarely showed any of my hardware sharing the same IRQ. Under win2k I have like 6 or 7 pieces of hardware on IRQ 11. Any ideas?
  19. hmm seems I dont have a PCI delay transaction setting.
  20. I have since reinstalled win2k without ACPI and I am still getting the slight stuttering. I wonder if it is the ultra100tx2 promist controller driver that I had to update because of the problem with SP3? Also what is the best way to make sure that ata-100 is working under win2k pro?
  21. Dos I understand how ACPI works, i was not questioning that. Im just trying to figure out why my audio is stuttering slightly when i play Mp3 files or other audio. Im using the same Santa Cruz drivers I used under XP
  22. I renamed and keep replacing and win2k keep putting the sp3 one back. do I have to do this in safe mode? also I dont have a dllcache folder
