Mock Network Server: NT4 Server? Win2k Professional?

Quote: Originally posted by SystemLogicMark: Hi, i have a question about which O/S would suit my situation best. Also, i need the client machine to automatically map a drive/directory from the server for each user. Basically Requirement 2. Anyways, i am in need of help and opinions Thanks in advance W2K Pro can act as a small Network Server as long as the machine you choose to handle logons doesn't have more then 10 clients. W2K Pro can also act as a Proxy and Gateway by using some Proxy Software. Winroute Pro 4.0 should do the trick. www.tinysoftware.com Using Computer Managment in W2K under users will allow you to set up home folder mapping. This folder can be stored on the W2K machine, and using Disk Quota you can control the total MB Usage. W2K Pro will do all of this very well. Please have in mind, this will not give you DNS Servers, WINS Servers, DHCP or the option to intall some of the Backoffice Applications. It will also be a Workgroup and not a Domain. If you need more client logons, DHCP, DNS, WINS and a full Domain, you had best look at W2K Server or WinNT Server. Saying from this Post, Linux may prove a bit too much for you. But Linux is a superb O/S. But a bit of a mindfield for first time networkers..!!!

    WIN2k Server

I know WinNT Server 4.0 had to have some sort of NIC adaptor installed to work correctly, and you can get around this by using the MS Loopback adaptor. But I thought that W2K would do this for you as it tried to detect your NIC and couldn't find one. But really, a NIC isn't going to cost no more then $30 - $40. If you can afford W2K Server, I'm sure you can afford a NIC.

    Windows 98!

I agree with Shrink on the HAL. The Hardware Abstraction Layer is there to ensure no applications gain exclusive rights to your hardware. Without this safety feature, Windows 2000 would be as much use as Win9x is today. This is one of the reasons Win9x crashes so much. Too many applications given too much control over your hardware. By having layers that control how applications behave in your O/S is much more reliable, but the pay off is that hardware drivers have to be more tightly written. Even Virtual Memory settings in W2K behave under layers in W2K. Its a pain, but its better in the long run..!!! Now W2K Services... That’s another topic altogether.

How can i reduce W2K Diskspace

DON'T COMPRESS the WINNT Folder. If you do, you will be sorry. You will compress the de-compress dll files, and thus when you re-boot, you won't be able to get Windows 2000 back up again, as you won't be able to de-compress the system files it needs. Anyhow, go to www.winsupersite.com and look for the topics about removing W2K components or doing a un-attended install script to help take all the junk out. Good luck..!!!

    DMA mode not working, why??

Have a look in your BIOS to see what mode each Device is using. It should be Mode 4, and this should enable you to select DMA under Windows 2000. Most BIOS will let you set the IDE Channels to Auto Detect, and most of the time it should be set to just this.

    Win2k / Voodoo3 2k / Star Wars Force Commander ?

Yeah.. I can only agree with this. I've seen another W2K Box with a V3 3500 AGP do the very same thing. Even with the *VERY* latest drivers, there was no way to fix it. I haven't installed another Card, as he wasn't pleased with spending the cash... Not good..!!

    Regclean?

I have to admit, I've never actually tried to use Regclean on W2K. I'm about to install a second copy of W2K on my system anyhow for mucking about with, and I'll use Regclean on this just to see what the effects are.. I'll keep you posted..

choosing setup drive for W98 on W2k sys

Its not a question of now choosing your Partition to install Win98. Win98 needs to have a System Partition in FAT or FAT32 to place some files. One being command.com. Without this file in the system drive, Win98 won't install, or boot or anything. You need to convert your system drive to FAT32 or FAT. Now as you have installed W2K on your system drive, using NTFS, this will not be easy. The File Format Convert tool in W2K can only convert to NTFS from FAT or FAT32 and not the other way around. I've heard that Partition Magic 5 works in W2K, so if you can get a copy of this, use this (if it works) to convert your system drive to FAT32. Failing this, you will have to use FDISK to format the whole system partition to FAT, then install Win98, then install W2K to another partition. Make sure you format it bootable..!!! Sorry mate.. Without the command.com file on your system drive, your stuffed..!!!

Please help with Dual Boot SYS

Someone once told me that Windows 98 SE can boot from the CD. So, if you have Win98 SE, set you System Bios to boot from your CD-ROM and try this.

    Command prompt

MS DOS in W2K and WinNT for that matter, is emulated. To keep things simple, MS DOS runs above the Kernel mode. The HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) along with System Services run in the Kernel mode for W2K, and Applications run above this in a user mode. In the Winnt folder there is an app called cmd.exe. This is where W2K goes to run an MS DOS Prompt. Anything that runs in the user mode is less privileged, as it doesn't have direct access to the hardware. This then prevents Apps crashing W2K out. So, when you next try to run MS DOS Apps in W2K, and it crashes, but your system stays running, this is why. But this causes problems. Some MS DOS Apps like control of your hardware. Called Realmode Drivers. CD-ROM Drives are sods for this. These Apps are sometimes called Pure DOS Apps, and getting them to run in W2K can be a problem. But anyhow, drifted a bit there... As all the others have said. Press ALT and Enter for full screen MS DOS (Emulated..!!) Also, make things quicker, on the start menu, at the run command, type in cmd.. Voila.!! Mickbench

    Regclean?

According to MS Knowledge base, it only works on Win9x and Win NT/Server 3.51 and 4.0 Until MS States it works on W2K, or someone tells us otherwise, best not use it. As with Win95 to Win98, the register can contain keys and hives that W2K has, but Win NT doesn't. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q147/7/69.asp

Is there an easy way to become a ms beta tester.

Yeah.. Take an MS Technet Plus Subscription out..!!! This way you get all of MS Software in Beta before general release.. Just as I do with the Technet Sub I have from the company I work for.. No really, there isn't an easy way to become an MS Beta Tester without going through all the right channels. Not that I know of anyhow..

    Creative - still nothing

I agree with DrSchmoe about the Beta SB Live Drivers. Just wait a little bit longer, and CL will release them.

    Hibernation Problem

Goto Power Options in Control Panel, and turn off Hibernate Mode. This should let you delete the huge file you have in your root folder. It may even get rid as soon as your disable Hibernate Mode.

How to install Win98 under Win2K?

If you don't fancy doing the W2K repair, just edit the boot.ini file to include Windows 98 as an option. Once in W2K goto a DOS session and type attrib c:\boot.ini -r -s Edit boot.ini and insert at the bottom c:\=Microsoft Windows 98 Type - attrib c:\boot.ini +r +s Reboot the machine and you will have Windows98 and W2K options Or if your lucky, as Windows 98 is NT Boot Menu OK, it may even add the line for you. If you find that Windows 98 has taken the boot menu away follow these steps: Reboot the machine from W2K CD. Peform a Repair. Follow instructions. The machine will then reboot into W2K again Once in W2K goto a DOS session and type attrib c:\boot.ini -r -s Edit boot.ini and insert at the bottom c:\=Microsoft Windows 98 Type - attrib c:\boot.ini +r +s Reboot the machine and you will have Windows98 and W2K options

    X-Box and W2K Kernel

X-Box Specs. CPU: Intel Pentium III at an undisclosed speed · Graphics: Nvidia NV15 GPU · OS: Windows 2000 kernel with DirectX 8 · Memory: 64-megabytes of 200MHz DDR unified system and video memory · Sound: 64-voice I3DL2 processor · Media: 4X DVD drive with movie playback · Storage: 8GB hard drive · Ports: four game ports, one expansion port · Connectivity: 10/100 ethernet connection · A/V: Custom outs for VGA monitor, flat-panel screens, TV, and HDTV Notice which Kernel will be used. Kind of odd wouldn't you say. What should a games console not do..?? Crash.. And what does Win9X Kernel do a lot of..?? Crash..!! And what Kernel is W2K based on..?? WinNT. I rest my case on why most try and get their games to run in W2K. So all you out their that say W2K isn't good enough for games, and I'm going back to Win9X, remember reading this before hand. W2K is worth the hassle..!!! Mickbench

Any *working* firewalls for Win2k yet??

I use a program from www.tinysoftware.com called Winroute Pro 4.01. Now its not just a firewall though. Its a DHCP, DNS, NAT Router etc... So its not *CHEAP* too purchase. But it does have very good PORT Closing, and makes using the Internet on Home LANS (Where file and print sharing would be used on TCP/IP) much safer. But it does now run on W2K. So, if your feeling a little bit naughty, and would like a full featured NAT Router with Firewall, download the evaulation package and search some warz newsgroups for a serial number. After you have installed your firewall (whichever one you start to use) go to www.grc.com and follow the links for shields up to see how many of your ports are open for all to see...!!!! Mickbench
  19. Does anyone know if a 3Com U.S. Robotics ISDN TA Terminal adapter (External) works in W2K with the supplied USB Cable. The Hardware compatible list says it works, but doesn't state if this was using the USB connector. 3-com's website only says it works with NT4.0 and not a thing about W2K. If anyone knows, let me know, as I need a ISDN TA for my PC as I've just had a 128Kb ISDN Line installed. Many thinks.. mickbench

    Whats with DX7 & Win2K?

How the hell did you manage that... I have with me right now, LucasArts JediKnights, and have just gone into the DXSETUP Folder and run DXSETUP.EXE. I asked it to re-install Direct X, were nothing happened, and it told me DX is now installed. I have tried this two times now, one with a complete reboot, and nothing. I would LOVE to know how you did it... Where was this Version of DX6 obtained from? Thanks.

    Piracy...

Has anyone actually called MS Tech Support for help on their Server Products? I work with three Windows NT 4.0 Server Rack Mounted Domain Controllers, with over 100 NT 4.0 Workstations, and MS Tech Support in the UK is not what it seems. First off, you have to pay extra ££££ for Support on NT Server 4.0, and any OEM Versions of NT you have to ring your Hardware Supplier. Not really very good. If you want to resolve a problem with your O/S, you HAVE to look in Newsgroups, FAQ's and places such as this. You can always try MS Technet (Which if you want the good stuff you have to pay) etc.. Its little wonder that MS Products do get pirated. Just how much is W2K? Full version. £250 + or upgrade from Win98 £140 + Not the cheapest O/S. For the record, my copy is not pirated, but received from our Hardware Suppliers at my place of work. The company doesn't want to update to W2K just yet, so they give them out to the Network and System Admins that work there... All two of us.. :->

    Whats with DX7 & Win2K?

Many of the LucasArt Games have a silly menu script that asks you to install DX6 if it cannot detect the DX6 or higher dll and vxd files. This isn't to say that DX isn't installed on your system. W2K does ship with (Final build 2195) DX7.0a which you would have thought run any DX D3D or DX6 or higher game. Which for some games is mostly true. Now, back to Lucasart games. Games like: Grim Fandango Jedi Knights Monkey Island III etc... Are looking for the Windows 9x DX files. W2K is a completely new O/S, but you can force the game to run. All you need to do is over ride the silly menu request. You can do this by going to the installation folder for the game (eg Grim Fandango) and look the .exe file that runs the game. Run this and the game may just run... As for the DXDIAG. This I have found is pretty useless if you haven't got the latest Video Drivers for you 3D/2D Video Card. Get the latest Voodoo3 W2K Drivers and install these. It should help. If you try and re-install DX6 it will just return you to the Desktop. you cannot install DX6 or lower on W2K. So worry not. DX7.0a is installed. It gets installed as a Standard feature of W2K. When MS releases newer versions of DX, W2K will also be able to upgrade as well. Just as Win 95 or 98 can... Hope this helps Michael

Dungeon Keeper 2 - Help Please

Yet another case of EA and W2K. Dungeon Keeper 2 WILL not run on W2K. I once thought it may be the SAFE DISC copy routines. But a no CD patch for Version 1.61 just resulted in the game giving me a black screen and going back to the desktop. This happens with most EA/Bullfrog Games I've tried so far. Not even the make compatible util on the CD helped with this one. Sorry..!!!
