Gravis Gamepad Pro USB works great! Just plugged it in without any installation or anything. All buttons etc. work.

Yeap, it stays at 100% during the printing. It's really annoying because it's hard to do anything else meanwhile. I have no clue as to what could be causing it... Thanks, Andy

Try this: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/win2k_removecomps.asp

At least it should stop the swap file from getting fragmented. And by setting the page file to a fixed amount, your HD access could be lessened because the OS doesn't have to increase and/or decrease the size constantly. But if you have enough memory so that the swap file is hardly ever used anyway, I would imagine that it doesn't make that much of a difference. Not that I've noticed anyway. (maybe I'm wrong. This is how I've understood it ) Andy

Same thing here. I just downloaded TweakUI for win2k a few days ago and right from the beginning I received the error message that it had expired. Anyone have a solution? By the way, after receiving the error message I uninstalled it, and it disappeared from my installed programs list. But in control panel I still have a TweakUI icon?! And when I click on it, the usual error message appears. hmmm.....

Here's what I did: I had Win2k installed on my c: drive, and I wanted to install win98 on my d: drive. The win98 install program doesn't run in Win2k, you get that general protection fault. I booted my computer with a win98 bootdisk, and ran the win98 setup from the d: drive (i copied the installation files to the HD to make installation quicker. Initially I had trouble with the win98 scandisk that runs before installation can begin. I disabled scandisk with setup /is /iq, and then everything ran smoothly. Win98 was automatically added to the startup menu (by win2k I assume). And now I have a dual boot system, with win98 on the d: drive, like I wanted. Hope this helps. Andy

That was a great tip, that "disable remote registry services"! It instantly reduced the amount of RAM used, by quite a bit. Any other suggestions, as to what services are seldomly used by users? There's something called "Remote Procedure call (RPC)" that is always started on my computer. Can I disable that too, or is it necessary to run Windows? There must be other services that can be safely disabled (or set to manual). You know, ones that are never used by an average user. By the way, what's the difference between disabling and setting to manual? Can I disable both the Indexing and remote registry? Thanks, Andy

The 3.81 drivers work great here! No probs whatsoever. In fact, I noticed a significant improvement in all the games that I tried (Q3, UT, Rally Champ. 2000, Sportscar GT). Now the games run just as well in Win2k as they did in win98.

Anyone been able to get a Mustek scanner to work under Win2K
Andy_25 replied to Andy_25's topic in Hardware
By the way, arent the Mustek drivers for NT and 9x the same drivers? At least in the case of my scanner, the zips are identical, and neither can be installed in Win2k. There's a line in the "install.ini" (or whatever it's called), that installation was aborted. So, I guess it's Win2k that aborts the installation because the installation program is trying copy files or do something that Win2k doesnt like. We had a similar problem with Lexmark printers until someone came up with an unbelievably simple solution; just add one line to a windows printer.ini file. The reason why I originally posted this message was to see if anyone had any ideas about a similar fix for scanners. No luck so far... Andy -
No probs here either! The 3.81 drivers work just great. I noticed a significant improvement over the older (3.78) drivers. Now most of my games run just as well in Win2k as they did in Win98.

Hi, It's not the installation program that puts your Lexmark in the "other devices" category, it's Win2k that does it. Since it's a PNP printer, Windows recognizes this, but since it doesn't have a driver for it, it doesn't know what device it is --> other devices. At least that's how I understood it. I had my Lexmark in the other devices right from the beginning, way before I installed any drivers. One way to avoid the installation everytime you boot is to keep your printer turned off while booting (or not boot often ) Andy

Also, if you want to make all your folders to look the same: in the folder options: "view tab" choose: "like current folders". That makes all of your folders to look like the current one.

Hi, I've been thinking about getting a TNT2 card but I noticed that there are at least 3 different kinds; TNT2 16mb, TNT2 32mb, and TNT2 Ultra (32mb?). Can anyone clarify what the difference is between the three? And which one should I get. I currently have a TNT (V550) and a Celeron 450. Would the more expensive Ultra be worth it in my case? Do I need 32mb for anything else expect really high resolutions? I mean I usually use 800*600 or 1024*768 anyway. Another thing; How good a job does Powerstrip do in Win2K? I'm curious because in win98 I used TNTOverclock and it used to increase my Quake3 framerate by 10fps. Now, when I use(d) Powerstrip in Win2K the increase was only about 2-4 fps! Maybe it's just the NVidia drivers. Thanks!

What's the difference between a TNT2 and a TNT2 Ultra?
Andy_25 replied to Andy_25's topic in Hardware
By the way, how about the 2nd part of my question, about Powerstrip. Powerstrip doesnt increase my FPS in q3 by nowhere near as much as TNToc in Win98. Any ideas why that is? Andy -
Thanks for letting us know man! I was just about to install the new drivers but I thought I'd check here first to see if people are having trouble with them. As Unreal Tourney is the game that I play the most, maybe it's not advisable for me to upgrade. Anyone have other opinions concerning the new drivers? JBoDean, which 3d card do you have? And which drivers did you have prior to the new ones? Andy

What's the difference between a TNT2 and a TNT2 Ultra?
Andy_25 replied to Andy_25's topic in Hardware
Ok I got it now. Thanks. By the way, do you know what the selection of "better" chips is like? Is it like the way Intel's "choosing" of better Celerons for example? Which means that there isnt really a big difference in the chip speeds; some are just labeled ultra and others arent (according to demand for example)? Just curious. The manufacturers will of course claim that there is a big difference. Andy -
Strange 2000 Server Problem -- Answer Gets A Date! :)
Andy_25 replied to denisebaker's topic in Hardware
A date, eh?! Really? Well, I'd better get cracking then.... -
How about general performance? Did you guys notice any significant improvement over 3.78 for example? I'm just wondering whether I should install the new drivers.

What's the difference between a TNT2 and a TNT2 Ultra?
Andy_25 replied to Andy_25's topic in Hardware
Hi, Thanks for the info. Is it so that all the TNT2s and all the TNT2 Ultra etc. all have the same general NVidia chips (which means it really doesnt matter which brand I get if I use the reference drivers)? So the difference is only in the core and mem clockspeeds. But then can I not overclock a regular TNT2 to the same values as the TNT2 Ultra? I guess the 16mb cards are not worth gettin, even if I only use the lower resolutions? In any case I'll probably get a bigger monitor one day, and then I'll want to run games in higher resolution. Hi, Does anyone know how I can remove the "links" item in the favorites menu? When I delete it, explorer 5 just adds it back the next time I start explorer. Also the "my documents" item is kinda annoying but I cant seem to remove them... hmm Andy

Hi, I'm a bit confused about what the size of the pagefile should be. It says in the options that it should be at least 1.5 times the amount of RAM. But isn't the reason for getting more RAM getting rid off using the pagefile so much? Using the 1.5x logic, the more RAM you've got, the bigger page file you need. I always thought that if I buy more RAM my pagefile would get smaller. So, what gives? (I'm probably overlooking something here, please set me straight) Andy

Hi, I remember someone posting a message here saying that they managed to get a 5700 to work using the Lexmark 3200 hack. Try the search button; as far as I can remember it under one of the Posts regarding Lexmark 3200. I'm sort of surprised that they told you they will not make drivers for 5700 because I just received an e-mail saying the 3200 drivers will be ready in a few weeks?! Then again, it's Lexmark we're dealing with here, so who knows what they're up to... Andy

I installed TweakUI for Win2K but when I tried to run it, I got an error message "this prerelease of TweakUI has expired", or something to that effect. I tried two different locations to download it, but the same problem appears always. Anybody know where I can find a non-prerelease version of TweakUI? Thanks!

Hi, This question has probably been answered before, but I couldn't find anything with the search. I currently have Win2k Pro final installed on my c: drive. Now I would like to install Win98 on my d: drive (because I cannot use my scanner in Win2K ). But when I try to run the Win98 setup program under Win2k I get an error message "W98SETUP caused a General Protection Fault in module USER.EXE at 0001:679A". Anybody know what this means? Is it not possible to install Win98 from Win2K? I tried booting with a Win98 start-up disk, and then running setup. But the scandisk in the beginning of the setup process finds errors on the C:\winnt directory, and if I choose not to fix the errors I cannot continue with the install. I've run scandisk in Win2k and it didn't find any errors, so I suspect it's the old scandisk in win98setup that incorrectly finds errors. (and I assume it's not a good idea to fix these "errors"?) By the way, if / when I am finally able to install win98, will it replace any startup files on c: root? I mean will win2k still start normally? If it does, can just backup my c:\*.* and after installing win98, just copy them back? (for example by booting through a win98 boot disk) Thanks! Andy

That's just the weird thing; win98 scandisk finds errors whereas the win2k scandisk doesnt (or at least it doesnt report any errors, so I'm assuming it didn't find any). Anyhow the system seems to run fine now. I just wish my scanner manufacturer would write Win2k drivers so I could finally get rid of that Win98 partition altogether. Andy
