Well, I installed win98 using a win98 bootdisk. It allowed me choose drive d: as the partition to install to (or rather enter a directory in which install to). I was expecting that I will have to do some kind of tweaking, at least with the boot.ini, but to my great surprise the installation had automatically put win98 in the boot.ini! So, I didnt actually have to do anything; just install win98 on d: drive and that's it! But I couldn't have done it without the setup /is /iq switch. Thanks. Andy

Hi, Great, thanks for the tips. What about the other issue? Will the Win98 installation replace some files on c:\ root? (even if I install win98 on d And if it will, is it enough that I just take a backup of my c:\*.* and then copy the files back after win98 has finished installing? By the way, the pagefile (pagefile.sys) is also in c:\ , is is safe to delete that when in dos mode? I mean, will win2k just create a new pagefile once it starts? Andy

I finally received a reply from Lexmark: "Dear Sir, We are currently dealing with the up[censored] of the drivers for 2000 and the one for the 3200 should be available from the 10/4/00. Sincerely, Lexmark technical support" They also sent me the following e-mail: "Dear Sir, By now you should have got the mail informing you that the driver for your printer will be ready at the end of the month. As said in the previous message, we are very sorry for the delay in replying but we were confronted with a big problem in our database. Once again, all our apologies. Sincerely, Lexmark Technical support." Well, I guess better late than never... Andy

Hi, When I surf the net I very often right-click on a link to open it in a new window. When I used Netscape in Win NT and 98, Navigator "remembered" the size of the previous new window. For example, if I always maximized the new window, eventually Navigator would automatically maximize new windows. Explorer doesn't do this, and everytime I use the "open in a new window" function, it opens this tiny window which I have to manually maximize. I know it's small problem, but sometimes it's a bit annoying I having to maximize 10 or 20 windows in a row. Maybe someone knows how to fix this. My second minor problem comcerns the "favorites". Explorer always puts the "links" folder back to my favorites eventhough I've just deleted it. Does anyone know how to stop it from doing this? So, if anyone has any solutions to these, it would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks for the tip! When I first tried it, explorer didn't "remember" the size. But I tried this: I spawned a new window, then resized it to the size I want it to be, and then used Task Manager to close explorer. This seems to work everytime! Again, thanks! Andy

Hi, Nope, I haven't noticed any pauses during printing. But then again I havent actually done much printing yet, just tried it out a few times. But I'm sure I would've noticed any long pauses. Do you have a scanner attached to the same printer port as the Lexmark? Sometimes I had a "pause" problem with my old HP printer, if my scanner wasn't turned on. Although that's probably not what's happening in your case... Anyhow, it's good that the hack worked! Andy

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by deleting all the files (maybe it's just what I'm explaining here), but here's what I did: Delete every file under /WINNT/System32/spool/drivers/w32x86, and also every file under \WINNT\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86. For some reason after I did this (and rebooted as far as I can remember) the setup program ran just fine! (without the spoolsv error or the "..subsystem unavailable" error). If Windows doesn't allow you delete some of the files, try and reboot, that helped in my case. You have to delete every file. Someone also told me that I should've deleted every lexmark entry in the registry. I didn't do that and everything worked just fine. Andy

I can't believe the answers these companies give sometimes! If this is not a technical support issue, why didn't they forward the message to whoever it does concern?! I was also curious about the message '..available by release date', but I guess that doesnt really mean anything...

Hi, I use WinOnCD 3.7PE and it works great under Win2k. Don't know about 3.6 though. Maybe you can get an update from CeQuadrat? I've tried the latest version of Nero also and seemed to work ok too, although I personally prefer WinOnCD. Check the compatibility section of this site, maybe there's some further info on this.

Hi, As far as I can remember this question has been answered quite a few times before. Please always use the "search" button first. In any case, DirectCD 3 (the one that comes with EasyCD 4) doesn't install under Win2k. There is a fix available though, but I haven't tried it. DirectCD 2.xx generally works with Win2k. What I did was, I first installed DirectCD 2.5 and then installed the update from Adaptec. This way everything worked without any "fixes". Just remember to update your ASPI layer before installing DirectCD. Andy

Hi, I would imagine that you have to modify the fix for it to work with the Zxx printers. So instead of using: "Lexmark 3200 Series ColorFine" = "Lexmark 3200 Series ColorFine (MS)" , "08/04/1998" You should try replacing the stuff about 3200 with info concerning your specific printer driver. I would think that it's very unlikely that the 3200 fix would work with the Z11. Z31 or Z51 are a different matter since at least they use two cartridges (don't they?) Dont give up! PS:For anyone having trouble with dates of drivers, remember that the Lexmark website uses a different date format than the fix. So if the date on the Lexmark website is "04/08/98", then in the fix you have to use "08/04/1998". (just a reminder, because that's where I went wrong originally )

Yeah, they work fine for me now also. I don't know what I did wrong the first time, but after I deleted the files that it had installed and tried again, it seemed to work without any problems. Great!

Hi, At least on my computer Q3 works just fine if I install the game in win98 and then use that exe to run the game in win2k.

The "printupg.inf" is under whatever directory you installed win2k to.(for example win200/inf, if that's were you installed it.) I tried the fix but for some reason it didn't work. Once I got as far as to the part where I have to "install new cartridges", but then I received the following error message: "Spoolsv.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program". Now whenever I start win2k the same error message appears. I suspect it's because the Lexmark installation program installed something it shouldn't have, but now I cannot even uninstall the printer. When I try to delete it I get a message saying : "Printer cannot be moved. The Print subsystem is unavailable". Also the regular uninstall has disappeared. Does anyone have an idea what this means? I have also deleted the line "lexmark 3200 series...." from the printupg.inf, but that didn't make any difference. Also now when I start the setup program it says something like "spoolsv.exe is not running, do you want restart it"? When I click "yes" I get a list of printer ports and only "file" is available. By the way, when I started this whole thing, I noticed that there was already a line called "lexmark 3200 series..." in my printupg.inf. Does that tell anyone anything? How about the driver date? I mean how do you figure out what the correct date of a driver is? Appreciate any help! Thanks!

Please do spread the word. Hopefully Lexmark will see the amount of people having trouble with their Lexmark printers and finally make drivers for it... What ticks me off the most is that they haven't even bothered replying to my e-mails. At least they should have a Win2K FAQ on their website. Did you notice how difficult it is to even send an e-mail to them? You have to got through the "knowledge" thing everytime...

Yeah, I know. I was also pretty happy with my Lexmark until I installed Win2k. As I've understood it the developers have had a beta copy of win2k for ages! How long can it take to make a freakin driver for a printer... (I'm not that familiar with printer drivers; maybe it does take longer than 6 months ) If Lexmark's answer is that Win2K is an OS aimed at the business user and the Zxx and 3200, etc. are aimed at the home user, then why on earth do they support NT4? NT is hardly a home user OS now is it? If I bought my Lexmark 3200 to be used on NT then I think it's fair that they support Win2k also. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a printer manufacturer to provide driver support for at least the OS following the one they support out of box.

I have to agree with you on the Lexmark issue. I also have a Lexmark printer which I can only use in win98 or NT4. I wrote to Lexmark twice asking if they are planning on writing drivers for Win2k, so far no answer. I guess, I should've bought that HP printer... As far as Diamond is concerned, I have a Viper V550 and I haven't had any problems with it. But then again I've never had to contact their customer support...

Hi Unkoon2000, I also have a Lexmark 3200, and I haven't been able to get it working under Win2k. I've written to Lexmark twice on the matter, and so far I've not received any reply for my e-mails. My guess is that they are not planning on writing drivers for Win2k. Yeah, I know, it sucks. Maybe if enough people write them and complain they will see some sense. Despite what Yuppie just said, I don't think this topic has been discussed in detail before; I searched the forum the first time I was looking for drivers for my Lexmark, and there werent that many posts on this. Yes, there were a few, but they didn't really answer the question of whether Lexmark has told anyone anything. Anyhow, can anyone comment on how difficult it is to write new drivers, based on the NT drivers for example? For hardware like a 3D-card I would imagine it's pretty difficult, but what about printers? I can remember someone saying that the 3200 NT drivers worked with RC2 or RC3, so why not the final release? Thanks for any replies!

Hello I've been running Win2K for ages now and I can't seem to make it crash! Usually when I get drunk I can get Win98 to crash in 5 mins.... Whats wrong with Win2K? Is it Drunk proof or what? Come on, someone help me! ..... Sorry just joking,,,,. I've just been so happy with Win2K. Even when I'm totally wasted I cannot get the damn thing to crash. I hope everyone gets that I'm joking..... But on a lighter note, I really think this forum is great! It's help me overcome a lot problems with Win2k! Thanks everyone!

Really what I meant to say was that Win2K is DrunkProof, which is pretty cool in my book! Usually when I run Win98 for about an hour ít usually crashes, but I havent been able to "crash" Win2k in my drunken stupor. So, hands up to Windows 2000!!!! An OS supported by drunken assholes! It works great!!!!

I've seen so many complaints here that i thought I'd post a positive message for once! I just got Unreal Tournament, and I couldn't believe how well it run under Win2K! No jerking or anything. It run much better than Q3 in win98 (no, I havent tried Unreal in Win98 yet, maybe it will be even better there than Q3). But anyways, Unreal works just great on my system . And my computer isnt even such a great one. A Cel 400@450, 128MB, TNT. Now, one question. Do you guys think that my system would be a lot faster with a better 3D-card? I now have a TNT, so would a TNT2 or one of the 3dfx cards increase my gaming performance significantly? Thanks for any replys!
