Hi there. I just set up my system (PIII-450, 256Mb, TNT2U, SBLive) as a dual boot with Win98SE and Win2000 (build 2195). The problem is with shutting down Win2000. Now, I installed the updated TNT2 drivers (3.76) but all the other drivers are the Win2000 ones. Other software I installed includes PowerDVD, Winamp etc - nothing too unusual. The problem is.... Every time I go to shut the system down (not restart, which works fine) I get a blue screen with an error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL This is accompanied by the usual "if this is the first time you have seen this error...." blurb. Does anyone have any ideas on this? The system seems to perfiorm fine when running and it reboots fine. Note that Win98 works fine also, but that also tends to hang on the Shutdown screen now and again...but that is a bit of a feature of SE...(: Any and all help on this will be most appreciated. Hi there. Ok I have a kinda unusual and very annoying problem here....with the PC... I have my system dual booted with Win98SE and that works fine. But, at any time when I'm on the desktop in Win2000, the system can just turn itself off and back on. This has happened with no apparrent pattern. I can be listening to Winamp, browsing and then it just reboots...or I opened up he Derag program and went to analyse a drive, and it rebooted. The odd thing is that I can play UT online for ages and it is all fine. I reseated the drive cables, the RAM, the Processor and the TNT2 card, but it still happens. The system has a PIII and a Jetway MoBo (VIA chipset). Any ideas? I tend to believe the problems are Win2000 related, as Win98 doesn' reboot the system like this. Any ideas are appreciated here. Palos, yea, I had that issue with the Menu screen staying in the top left corner of the screen. I had this with the 6.31 drivers and since I have a TNT2U card I just reverted to the 5.32 drivers and it all works fine now. I apreciate that the official drivers from NVidia should work fine but that is not always the case...I mean, dya not wonder why there are SO MANY NVidia drivers versions out there?!? I would suggest you experiment with some different NVidai drivers and see what the results are. Finally, Win2k comes with DX7 as default. I have installed the DX8 for Win2k and it works fine, altho there is a version 8a out now, so you may as well get that. DosFreak...yea, but you have a hardware decoder card there! Here, am I right in thinking that the problem with writing CDs is that the VIA driver enables DMA on the channel? If so, should I be able to install the VIA driver (so enabling DMA on the DVD drive) and then disable DMA on the CDRW dive? Would that work? Thing is that I cannot see where in the VIA DMA tol program it will allow me to set the Mode for the CDRW's secondary IDE channel? Hey all. I have an ASUS K7V with a TNT2U and at the moment I have the 5.13 drivers installed. However, these don't let me run Half Life in OpenGL mode.. I can only use D3D, and I'm getting real bad FPS with that! I installed the 6.31 drivers and they work fine for Half Life...OpenGL runs well but with these drivers installed sometimes when I boot the system it just goes to a blank screen instead of the desktop. Then I have to go to VGA mode and install the 5.13 drivers to fix that....so basically the 6.31 drivers are a no go. I think I'll go and try the 7.17 drivers and see how they work. Does anyone have any suggestions about which drivers I can use and which are recommended? I tried getting the drivers from Reactorcritical.com but a lot of the links on that site are down... DosFreak..yea, I've uninstalled the VIA BM driver and am now using the default 2000 driver but that is not as good with DVD's as the VIA driver. I have an Asus K7V-750Mhz with a TNT2U card and I'd love to have the VIA driver installed for its DVD performance and still be able to burn CDR's! Maybe a future revision of the VIA driver will offer a fix for this? Lets hope so. Any other suggestions?

Hi there. Yea, I have a Creative 121032 CDRW and I'm sure it supports DMA but it just stopped writing to CD's after installing the VIA 3.11 BM driver. This Via driver did help my DVD's play a lot smoother under 2000 tho...which was my main reason for installing it. So I just uninstalled the VIA driver and now I have the regular BM driver installed and the CD drives are again in PIO mode and the CDRW works again... But my DVD's are choppier now... Any ideas of a way around this? Is it simply the case that the 3.11 VIA BM driver will stop our CDRW's from burning?!? Does anyone have any more info on this or are we just gonna have to wait for VIA to correct this in a future revision of the BM driver?!? Cheers for any help! Fozz.

Hi all. I used to be on these foums a lot but have been "away" for some time, so maybe his Q is allready answered way back when, but here it goes! I have the final Trial version (build 2195)of Win2K Pro installed and so I have the system clock set back so it won't timeout. I was gonna get a new HDD and do a new clean install of the full version of Win2k but I was just wondering what would happen if I installed SP1 over my trial version..? Is thi recommended? Will it install OK and will it get rid of the time limit on the Trial version? Any inf you people have on this is appreciated. Happy Christmas!

Hi all. I've been using Win2000 for a while now and it's definitely the way to go. However, I just dual booted it woth WinME (final release) and I have a question on that. When I go to play a DVD using Power DVD and DVD Genie, when I press Play, I get the following error: ASPI for Windows not available! Only 32-bit CD-Rom drivers supported. The Device Manager reports no problems and the drive is working fine. What's the story with that? I just installed the OS so I would have thought that I have all the drivers needed... Any and all help is appreciated!

First of all I better thank Arin for being an arsehole...he obviously has a lot of freetime... Anyway, I resolved the problem by just downloading the latest ASPI drvers for Win98 from the Adaptec website. That sorted it out. Finaly I have to say that WinME is fine...no real problems - it just seems to be a slimmed down version of Win2K without all the security and other NT options, so if you don't need them then ME might be worth a look. G'luck all.

Howaya...I also have a K7V, but with a TNT2U and I run the 3.78 drivers and it all seems fine - half life runs fine. But Starlancer locks hard all over the place so I run that under 98 with the 5.22 drivers. I'm afraid to install the 5.22's in 2000 as there seem to be nothing but problems with all 5.xx drivers in 2000..... l8r. [This message has been edited by Fozz (edited 01 June 2000).]

Well, everything is a lot better now allright....I can rely on the system to boot ok I'm running the Detonator 3.78 drivers by the way...afraid to change that. The only problem that I am having is that Starlancer locks hard all over the place. Now that is the only Direct3D game I play, so I'm not sure if the problem is with that or with Direct3D in general. Hey there. I just saw your post and your resigned followup! I know how you feel...I love 2000 and it just used to crap out on me all the time. The reason I am mailing you is to get you to check out this post: http://www.ntcompatible.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002595.html In it is explains that a lot of Win2K probs seem to be related to a bad VIA driver. Now, I am not sure if your "dodgy" mobo has a VIA chip...but if so then check his out! I installed this update and it has helped. Man...thanks a lot for this! I never seen that article on Tom's Hardware before...I just thought that there were issues with the NVidia drivers, but from this article it seems to indeed b a VIA chipset issue. I guess it don't matter where the blame lies so long as we can fix it, eh?! I installed the updated VIAAGP file and everything seems ok now. I was previously having a lot of BSOD's on reboot, which would orce another reboot, and so on. This ater multiple re-installations of Win2000 because I thought I was doing something wrong! Hey there. I also have a K7V but I only have a TNT2U card. Everything is fine until I go to update the nvidia drivers in 2000. I tried 3.84 and on reboot I only got a blank screen. "Last Known Good" got me back in using the default 2000 TNT driver. and all is well again. Then tried the 3.78 drivers and on reboot it worked! However, if I reboot, there is a good chance that I will get a BSOD in NTOSKERNEL and it reboots...them it may get into 2000 after that. There is no pattern to this so now I am not rebooting the system at all if I can help it. Stanby works fine so I use that. The point is that these blank screen and reboot crashes all seem to be related to the NVIDIA drivers. I have, over time, tried lots of driver levels but still the problems persist. I will try those BIOS changes suggested above an see if that helps, but in the end we need some push by NVIDIA on this. Take care all...comments welcome.

Man, I have exactly the same probs. I believe the issues are with the TNT2 drivers.... I installed a clean version of 2000 and then installed the Creative Labs 3.76 drivers, and that was all the wrote! Rebooting all over the place and then it would just fal to boot...blue screen NTKernel errors etc. At the moment everything is rock stable with the default video drivers...but no games for me! L8r.

Flow...what's the story? What's this patch you are talkin' about? Anyhow, since I disabled the Auto Shutdown I'm gettng BSOD errors, as I said earlier in this post... Ah well...lets hope we get to the end of this soon.

Mello...I get the same errors in the Event Log. I've disabled the Automatic Shutdown "feature" of Win2000 so that now I actually get to a BSOD and I can see what the error is. I mainly get PFN_LIST_CORRUPT and I cannot find anything on this, or what may be causing it....but I can get it at any time, even when I'm not doing anything. I also get a lot of other errors - you know, when it says that an "Error is being created" and IE5 will just close down. Could it be related to the fact that I have the system Dual-Booted with 98 on the same partition? I don't know but I may just dump 2000 and install it all again from scratch. I gotta update my NVIDIA drivers to the 3.81 and install the EZ CD Creator update from Adaptec and see what effect they have. I'll keep y'all posted. G'luck.

EddiE314...that's a bit harsh! I'm currently dual booted with 2000 and 98 and I only use 98 for BattleZone2, I use Win2000 for all other purposes. However, I keep getting BSOD's in 2000, as documented in my thread here "Random Shutdowns". Now, I am taking onboard all suggestions to fix these errors and I don't consider myself "Unable to use the OS". I've used all the preloaded Win2000 drivers except for the TNT2 card, which I've installed the Detonator 3.78 drivers for. But I'm getting a lot of crashes, and not in games either. Actually, the only game I play in 2000 is UT and that works a charm. I'm getting crashes while browsing and just on the desktop and his dos not happen in 98. So should I return to 98 due to my inability to use 2000?! I think not. I cannpot say if the problems are with my hardware, my video drivers, or with whatever apps I have running in 98, but I'm having problems, and I can understand someone reverting to 98 for now, and then coming back to 2000 in a few months. Having said that, I want to stick with 2000 - I simply prefer it to 98. But there are a lot of peple who will not have as much patience and go back to what they know, at least for a while. That's all.

fdahl: Ok, good idea! I disabled the auto reboot as you suggested and now when it crashes I'm getting BSOD's, as expected. I've gotten three so far: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT MODE_EXCEPION_NOT_HANDLED IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Well, not sure what is causing these but I'm open to any ideas. Hi there guys. Ok, well, I upgraded to the Detonator 3.78 drivers and I also installed the updated ASPI drivers from the Adaptec website. Up[censored] the video drivers didn't seem to help and I haven't tested the system a lot since up[censored] the ASPI drivers, but I've been logged on here for an hour messing around and it hasn't reboot yet! Wahey! I'll update this pot wth more news as I get it. May be a while as I'll be drinkin' now till Paddy's day on Friday! Go on Istabrac!

Hey Flow. I'm thinking that it is somehow related to the TNT2 drivers. What drivers have you got installed for your TNT2 card? I have the Creative 3.76 drivers installed. Actually, just yesterday I couldn't even get into 2000 at all - it was rebooting as soon as I hit the desktop! Today I disabled ACPI in the BIOS and I am now in Win2000, but that might not be related as, ya know, this whole rebooting thing seems to be random. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling my video drivers and see if that helps. Cya.

So you're basicaly advising me to revert to 98! I's a good job I have a Dual Boot setup so! I don't want to give up on 2000 just yet tho...when it works it works well...unfortunately I spend too much time looking at the bootup screens for my own good!
