True. And one thing I did leave out was my refresh rate in original post. It is 85Hz, and I must stress, the game was working at these exact settings before the reinstall of windows. I know my system can handle these settings, there is something software/driver related going on...I think Thanks, -AciD

To cover the basics: The problem cropped up after a fresh install of Win2k with SP1 and all the updates. I start get into hl (or cs), setup everything, set video (800x600, OGL, 3dfx mini) and try to start a game. Screen goes black, I cannot get back to Windows (at least in video, I can CTRL-ALT-DEL and select shutdown without seeing it...screen stays black but most of the time it will shutdown). I am running at 960x720 in 32bit color. These settings DID NOT give me game problems before format and reinstall, thus it can run fine under these settings. No hardware changes since it was running fine either. I have tried: *reinstalling half-life numerous times *up[censored] half-life to the latest version the same amount of times *installing all 3dfx drivers from WHQL and thru the beta series *tried the halflife.inf compatibility fix *installing Wicked3D drivers I was having this problem quite a while before the reinstall of Win2k, and to the best of my recollection some cryptic "leaked" 3dfx drivers worked (this was months ago). I am having some difficulty finding these drivers to test this hypothesis. There seems to be an interesting link from the 3dfx link on the ntcompatible sidebar, but it just takes me back to the main page. HEEEEEEEEEELLLLPP! I am going thru serious CS withdrawals. TIA, -AciD

After numerous re-installs and a host of other changes...I seem to have gotten rid of those kb/mouse lockups. I did two things of substance, pretty sure the later one did it. Switched audio cards from AWE64 ISA to Monster MX300 Switched HD's/CD-ROMs around such that everything is a master (4 devices, 2 UDMA66 connectors, 2 UDMA33 connectors ie primary master and secondary master on UDMA66 and primary master and secondary master on UDMA33) I dunno, but I'm glad they are gone. ------------------ -AciD >-----------------------< Hardware: BP6 running QQ Beta BIOS HPT 366 1.231 Beta UDMA66 Dual Celeron 366 @ 566MHZ 128MB Samsung -GL IBM UDMA66 13.6g WDC UDMA33 5.1g Toshiba 32x OTI Socrates 2x2x6x V3-2000-AGP clocked @ 166 SB AWE64 Value Kingston PCI 10/100 NIC >-----------------------< Software: Win2K Pro Retail (2195) Office 2000 Premium NA ViruScan NT 4.03a Mobo Monitor 4.10

Well, first off...you need to sign on to the machine as Administrator, or under an account that has administrator privs. Second, unless there is a patch issued that I'm unaware of, the sidewinder software will not work properly under Win2K. You'll get blue screen errors, and the machine will take forever to shutdown. Sorry, -AciD Quote: Originally posted by mmaxx: Hello, How can i install the sidewinder 4.0 software under W2K. I'm using Black Ice too. Tried Zone Alarm and seemed to work well, but setting up all the programs for internet access was a pain in the rear. I'm not as worried about what is going out as I am about what is coming in, and Black Ice handles this task well. One question, however. I am currently running version 1.9.25 (think it's the latest, d-loaded the upgrade last night) and applied the pre-beta Win2k files as directed, yet I still get the 0.0.0.0 attack, filter failed. The Win2k files were supposed to take care of that, no? I went to the sheilds up site, and Black Ice seems to be functioning correctly (everything stealth), but I wanna get rid of that error... Any thoughts? Quote: Originally posted by ThC 129: I use black ice defender. Was it a keyboard/mouse freeze, but everything else seemed normal (mp3/mpegs keep playing, web page still displayed)? I mean, no sign of crash excpet you can't input anything? If so, do a search on the message board for hard freeze, and click "hard freeze in win2k" Alot of people are having a random freeze problem, but not necessarily associated with IE5. Any more info on this problem? Solutions? Considering the amount of people experiencing this problem, and the varied hardware mentioned in all these posts, I find it difficult to believe this is anything other than a Win2k issue. Now, I'm not a Win2k hater by any means, but these lock-ups are a real pain in the @ss. They happen a couple times a night, and don't seem to be related to any particular program that I can tell. I have had it happen a few times in IE5 when viewing a .mpg or playing an .mp3 or even just surfing, and I have had it happen numerous times in UT as well. Video and audio keep on playing away in all cases, but mouse and keyboard become inactive and the only correction is to reset the system. I have swapped out both mouse and keyboard (still PS2 flavor, and I didn't think they were the problem, but it was an easy test to eliminate one possible cause) to no avail. Anybody having this problem using a USB mouse/kb? I also (on separate iterations)disabled active desktop, reinstalled Windows over itself, and unplugged and replugged in the mouse and keyboard after the freeze...no joy. Nothing like being in a kick-@ss game of UT online, fraggin' hardcore and <poof>, I need to reboot my system. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I had the same problem. As another poster said, removal of the software will fix the problem, but you lose full functionality. My solution, remove the software, box up the controller and take it back to where I boughtit for a refund. Still hunting for a fully functional game comtroller under Win2k...the quest continues... -AciD Quote: Originally posted by eraser-: I bought a Sidewinder Pro USB yesterday and I installed the Sidewinder 4.0 software that came with it so i could enable and disable proportional control. Now I know it says a message about not being tested with Windows 2000 but the software functions great excpet for one problem, my computer wont shut down or restart. Anyone know a fix?

Yea, I've got the same Voodoo3 hex as you...as soon as you enable r_smp and restart the game...POOF all gone. Pretty well known problem, and attributed to the v3 drivers not addressing SMP. Has anyone been in contact with s3 about this? I emailed them some time ago, and of course, got no response. Quote: Originally posted by jolmstead: I started out with a 3dfx 3000 and never did get the thing to work using r_smp 1. The only thing it did for me was lock up the system. I replaced the 3dfx with a CL Annihilator Pro and can now run in smp mode. What I have not seen is any big inprovment in FPS. We are talking less than .5% gain. With the latest drivers I am at about 60 FPS with most options cranked up. ------------------ -AciD >-----------------------< Hardware: BP6 running QQ Beta BIOS Dual Celeron 366 @ 566MHZ 128MB Samsung -GL IBM UDMA66 13.6g WDC UDMA33 5.1g Toshiba 32x OTI Socrates 2x2x6x V3-2000-AGP clocked @ 166 SB AWE64 Value Hayes V90 Int. Did you happen to sign up for Microsoft's Windows 2000 SDK mailing and forget? It was supposed to ship in March. Of course, I think that was supposed to come with Server too... [This message has been edited by acidspray (edited 02 April 2000).]

A new version of Nero has been released, 4.091. One of the bugfixes listed is: bugfix: hibernate mode now fully supported under Windows 2000 So if you have all of the above installed and were expecting hibernate and not getting it, this may be an option. It worked for me...well somewhat. It got rid of the error re: driver on secondary IDE, hibernate started, shutdown fine. Windows restarted and I got a BSOD about multiple IRP requests or some such unintelligible (to me) nonsense. I'd be interested in other peoples experiences, should you wish to be the next guinea pig. ------------------ -AciD >-----------------------< Hardware: BP6 running QQ Beta BIOS Dual Celeron 366 @ 566MHZ 128MB Samsung -GL IBM UDMA66 13.6g WDC UDMA33 5.1g Toshiba 32x OTI Socrates 2x2x6x V3-2000-AGP clocked @ 166 SB AWE64 Value Hayes V90 Int. Have you hit F6 at the beginning of the installation process (as soon as the blue screen comes up)? You will need a floppy with HPT driver files for the UDMA66 controller. The disk provided by ABIT in the box has older drivers that are not Win2k friendly. Go to their website, get the updated drivers and put them on a floppy. Try installing again from the UDMA66 drive, hitting F6 as mentioned, supplying the drivers at the prompt, and you should be on your way...

Thanks for the response. Now if I can only justify spending that much on a friggin' mouse! Don't think I saw it in your response, are all buttons mappable in FPS games, or does it depend on the game? There are 5 buttons, no (3 top/2 side)? Thanks again, -AciD

Yeah, I'm looking at the MS Intellieye Explorer and some others. Are the buttons (finger and thumb) fully configurable under games such as Q3A, UT and the like? Is the Win2K driver support there? Thanks, -AciD
