Time to play Devil's Advocate - Do we really need RAID in de
Ge0ph replied to BladeRunner's topic in Hardware
For the user that surfs the net, plays games, does checking on the computer, and such, raid is ridicules. However for the users that that treats their box like a finely tuned mescal car, raid is a nice thing to have on a board. IDE raid is a cheap way to start playing with raid and understanding it, but it’s just a matter of time before the real power user will want to move to SCSI. -
Go to www.bp6.com for some information about this But the last time I checked they said it could not be done. However Abit is coming out with the VP6 and it can do dual FCPGA proc's.

I would like to know the answer to this one too. The local phone company is giving me another dsl line (I work on their computers and help test new stuff) and I was wondering just how I was going to play with it.

Internet Connection Sharing - Alternative programs ???
Ge0ph replied to slewis1972's topic in Networking
I would suggest Sygate. It's what I used before I got my DSL and router. -
This is aimed at NT but it hold true in Windows 2000. Go to: http://arstechnica.com/tweak/nt/ntservices-1.html

This is a guess but I think the new bitmap needs to be the same color depth and file size or it will mess with the file it is embedded in.

You might try a WindowsMe forum. [This message has been edited by Ge0ph (edited 14 September 2000).]

Thank you Four and Twenty. That really needed to be said. I have been ignoring 9x questions but it's getting harder to wade through the 9x crap to find the NT/2000 stuff. Moderators?

I don't think you can play such games in a Terminal Services client. You can run most office apps or 2D apps in a Terminal Services client but probably not any thing with 3D or sound. To do 3D games you will need to install them locally.

Display Propertys>Appearance> go to Item and then scrollbars and then set the size. I think 16 is the default.
-
This will not help you now but check this site out http://www.pcscoop.com/HARDWARE/motherboards/ABIT/SA6andmore.asp It looks like the new ABIT VP6 is what you are looking for.

I had problems with a SOYO board I have until I used the new viainf.exe file I got at the via site. Now it stays up until I decide to shut it down.

The 9x kernel is to stupid to handle transparency. Software can make it do transparency but it is very slow.

On both of my W2k box's I have the SP1 installed and it says it build 2195. He might have been talking about Whistler.
-
Or you could boot from the NT4 CD and during the install tell it to delete the Fat32 partition. Then tell it to install in that space you just opened up. Then tell it to format using FAT.
-
Try this, -Boot to a Windows 98 boot disk -Run fdisk and delete nondos partitions. -Install new OS. Should work. But I do agree with nagual, W2k is the best Windows out. So I'm guessing you have a program that just will not work in W2k.
-
In my opinion, W2k is more tweakable than any 9x kernel. At http://www.ars-technica.com/tweak/nt/index.html there are many NT4 tweaks that work in W2k as well. Also, get the resource kit, it has enough toys to keep you busy for days. Ge0ph www.ge0ph.com

I reboot my W2k systems about every two weeks so how long it takes realy doesn't matter. For me how long it takes to start up or shut down is not imprortant, it's how well it runs when it's up that counts. If it were like the dos/9x kernel that needs rebooting several times a day than I would worry about it. But it's not.

I agree!! It's one of the best toys I've bought myself in a long time. Great product!! Ge0ph www.ge0ph.com

Ya, I spent several thousond dollars on my box just so I can turn it on and watch it run, I might even wait a while to see the screen saver kick in, NOT. It's by tring different stuff and talking in these forums that we all learn the true power of our systems. That's what it's all about.

Set the remote tcp/ip gateway to the box with the isdn. You may also have to put in your ISP's DNS numbers on the remote box.
-
You should be able to go to your ISDN adapter properties and look at the sharing tab. Check the ICS box and you should be good to go.

I have had motherbords that would ground out on the case. Sometimes the ground would happen out of the blue and kill the machine or it just appeared dead at start up. I know this is a stab in the dark but it is possable. Jeff Young

I have been told (so this is hearsay) that a good quality 230 watt power supply will work better then a cheap 300 watt power supply. I am due to get a new box and I wiil probably go with an Athlon or Duron. I am also told that if you get the right combo of parts (key parts are power supply and quality memory) then you will have no problems with the new AMD chips. You need to enable Internet Connection Sharing or ICS.
