Im trying to use the system file checker to restore files from the win2k cd. The event viewer fills up with this on all files.... The protected system file c:\program files\common files\system\ole db\msdatl2.dll could not be restored to its original, valid version. The file version of the bad file is 2.52.6019.0 The specific error code is 0x800b0100 [No signature was present in the subject. ]. I could not find much information on this at microsoft or the web. The cd is slipstreamed with sp2. I cannot figure this one out.

Its a fresh install of win2k with service pack 2 integrated into the cd. Ive only installed a couple of programs... I forgot to patch iis or at least shut it down and I got nimda like within 3 seconds ( hehe ). So after doing a virus scan I was just making sure that all the system files were in tact.. except none of them are getting replaced.

Big problem.. After playing with some of the permissions some how a group of folders on a certain parent folder have access denied to the administrator. These are important files. Is there a way to reset the permissions on them?

Hmmm.. In the advanced section.. take ownership then sub directories. Worked. Thank you. *deep long exale passes out*

You forgot one. Fireburner. If you wanna burn an iso or bin-cue perfectly everytime then use fireburner. You can build iso's with the filesystem builder also. All burner programs do this except they try to automate it for you. I have zero coasters. For ripping iso's I like blindread.. btw if your trying to burn dreamcast games that are in bin-cue format you need to convert them to diskjuggler format or it will appear to be unreadable and unbootable. There is a nifty little program called bin2boot that does this. google.com Also another thing I would like to mention is that all results of programs vary depending on your cdwriter. Discjuggler may work good on one writer but differently on another. Actually since most rely on the aspi layer I guess that would be a huge factor too. If everyone had the same cdwriter I would imagine the cdwriting software would be perfect by now.

I found this document on the web that explains how you can turn your pc into a dialup server for dreamcast and share your broadband connection. You need winroute and a dial up server installed. The problem is the instructions are for windows 98. I figure that whatever win98 can do win2k can do as well as far as networking goes. The only prob I have is I cannot get win2k to answer the "blind dial".. Meaning I cannot get the modem to answer without the signal or something. In win98 the guy explains how to do it in the registry... ------------------------------------------------------------------- In order to trick the Windows Dial-Up Server to pick up the line when the phone line is not ringing, you have to enter the standard modem Answer command into the registry. Open the Registry Editor and browse your way to: "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000\Monitor". If you have more than one modem installed you might not want "0000". Browse to whatever one you're using for the Dial-Up Server. Now set setting "2" to "ATA<cr>", so that it looks like the picture below. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Win2k as you would have guessed lacks this registry key. There is a link on how to do it with win2k server ... but it requires two phone lines two modems and I only have win2k proffesional it does not have the same ppp and routing features that win2k server does. Im sure the winroute method will work with win2k as soon as I figure out how to do this blind dial thing. Any ideas? Heres the link to the page.... http://home.elp.rr.com/terlouw/DCWinMEServer.htm

Need help hooking up my dreamcast to pc to share broadband
zoooom replied to zoooom's topic in Hardware
Well I found the registry key the one I was searching for I used an O instead of zero.. 0. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000 I added the ATA<cr> which is the modem answer command I have found. However now when I enable the modem in my incoming connections properties it constantly ticks about every 2 seconds. Like its hanging up over and over again. Event viewer says "The communication device attached to port COM3 is not functioning." Dreamcast modem cant find pc modem . Found another post from a guy who had the same problem on google groups. Damn. I dont want to install win9x. I refuse. Oh well. Maybe Ill just install linux. ( after reading a few hundred docs on ip masquerading and ppp ) -
Hey I got a dual boot between 2k and xp and in xp when the machine starts up I am unable to get access to the internet. After trying ipconfig I get "Internal error occured: The request is not supported" "Additional information: unable to query routing" The cables/nic and connection to my cable modem are fine because Im in win2k with the same setup and it gets the ip and that is how im here to write this post. And it did work previously I feel due to recent events or software may have caused this... Anyone got an idea? I could do a number of things.. Reinstall xp try a different nic. I am just curious to see if its possible to fix. Heres some info on what I did before this happened. I installed a shareware app called tcpView so I could monitor tcp/ip activity. Its basically like a realtime netstat only it also shows the application that is using the port. After I installed that my firewall starting giving me this fatal error "To many ip addresses" or something like that. I needed to install sql server client tools and it gave me the error "A previous installation needed to reboot and did not please reboot" or something to that effect. I do not remember installing anything that needed to reboot. Maybe it was tcpView. So I rebooted and here we are. Btw I have removed both the firewall ( tiny personal firewall ) and tcpView. And I also get an error from norton antivirus 2k2 "Unable to start email scanning" which is probably due to the fact that there isnt an internet.

I tried reinstalling tcp-ip and I just tried a new nic. Same error. I tried using sfc ( system file checker ) and all the system files were original. I see a format in my future. I guess I got to be careful when installing shareware on xp.

Like quake3, spiderman, red faction. When I hit tab wont drop to the desktop. In fact when I hit tab in spiderman or redfaction the game is screwed I cant get into it or the desktop. And under rare instances it will drop to the desktop but the game will shut down. When I get paged in icq or my firewall app pops up the game is history.. I have to power off the computer. I cant get into task manager. It used to be if a window popped up the game would minimize... kinda of annoying but better then system lockup. Quake3 has an alternative I can hit alt-enter and go into window mode. But this wont work on other games... Any ideas? running xp prof build 2600 Amd tbird 800 on a Asus A7v mobo 256k ram nvidia geforce 2 mx with latest xp drivers ... blah
-
Well I dont have a problem like the slow down. I guess I can live with it. I just cant run any apps that "pop up" or I have to reboot.

You know what I find ironic about this post. I bet even if 3dfx were still in business they wouldnt have made drivers for xp yet. They were always terrible with their drivers... late, buggy etc. Do you guys remember the whole "leaked 3dfx win2k drivers" thing. Well they werent actually "leaked from 3dfx". I stole them out of their developer website because they used the user/pass admin/admin to get in. It was so lame. I would just go download them from their site give them to a few people on the 3dfxgamers messageboard via pub and another guy who used to hang out hear named chameleon "win2kbox.cjb.net". I was pissed that they had drivers ( btw they worked 10 times better then any other drivers out ) and they wouldnt release them for us win2k users. They just let them sit their for months. I think the driver team their was seriously out to lunch. 3dfx is dead now. You cant expect nvidia to continue to support older model video cards if they bought out 3dfx. 3dfx is out of business. If you want to use xp you should get a new card. Especially since prices have come so low now a days.

If you do and your running win2k do you get that "Game host has to much latency" error or something like that. If Im lucky I get on 5% of the games. I have to logoff and rejoin battlenet about 10 times and then if Im lucky Ill get a game. Is there no solution for this? I know many of you who probably have this issue because I have looked over the net and it seems to be a common problem. Funny thing is I think it used to work... maybe its the 1.08 patch. Also it minimizes to the desktop without warning and then wont re-open. Tbird 800 asus k7v 256 pc133 win2k pro sp2 A big headache...

Partition magic is the most unreliable software I have ever used. The only thing I have found it to be useful for is the bootdisk that comes with it for emergency situations. The fact that it says it can convert between ntfs and fat32 then I'd guess over half the time ends up wrecking that partition annoys me. Ive also lost data moving partitions. I dont really blame pm for this because you really shouldnt be moving or changing partitons anyways. Its a complicated process. Everything falls into place nicely. Trying to move it around and change the type is bound to cause problems. I bet even converting from fat32 to ntfs has its own little problems. Planning out your partitions before hand is your best bet.

Uh huh huh. Cool man. Me 2 .

In case anybody is wondering I found a patch that fixes this issue... http://www.valhallalegends.com/sce.htm Its a starcraft enhancement that adds some cool features to the game. Also fixes a couple of other bugs. This isnt supported by blizzard but starcraft works flawless for me now. There is also a registry patch there that allows you to choose from more battlenet chat servers. "Bug where UDP thread terminated on destination port unreachable under Windows 2000"

Actually all fixboot does is fix your boot.ini file. If your looking to fix your mbr then in the recovery console type fixmbr. Then fixboot if you need it but you probably wont if you only have linux and win2k. This will overwrite the linux mbr with the win2k mbr. Btw if your just installing linux for experiementation what you can do is choose to install to the root of the drive and not the mbr and use a boot manager like bootmagic. This way when your done with linux ( or win2k ) you can just scrap the drive. Also dont install linux on an extended partition if possible. ( Assuming you dont have windows 9x ). This will make less headache.

Not the host... definetly win2k related. After about 10 or so different hosts I figured that out. Actually Its wierd if it happens one time then then all of them turn 6 red. And I have to rejoin battlenet. So its like I have to get lucky and join the first time. But this is all said and done I know whats going on I just was hoping somebody had found or made a patch... The answer is in the newsgroups. groups.google.com You can find at least 10 or more people who have confirmed this to be a problem with starcraft 1.08 on win2k.

Hornet I have a good internet connection and get awesome pings on most games I play. Battlenet is fine... I connect and browse around battlenet perfectly. Its just when trying to join a game. I also did alot of research before posting here and there are several people with the same exact problem. One guy on an oc3 said that he could only connect to a game about 90% of the time. Then he went on to say that with win98 on the same machine on a dual boot it worked perfectly. win98 = win2k = blizzard = ;( BTW the exact error I get is "The Latency of the Game Creator Is Too High" The thing that bothers me about this the most is that if it were win98 having the problem it would be fixed by blizzard immediately. This whole "win2k not a gaming os" bullshit is just an excuse for lazyness. You figure that a developer ( who normally uses NT ) would develop their applications to work in win2k. Thats just my opinion. ... Well at least with xp all the "home users" and "Business users" will be in the same house.
-
Yeah I know its not win2k's fault per say... but if I use a win98 box I NEVER get the message. No matter what time of the day it is. I searched the web also and many people claim the same thing. They say only in win2k do they get this. Sometimes its worse for others. So that tells me its definitely an issue with the way starcraft was programmed. It wasnt fully tested on windows 2000 ( obviously ). It would be dumb to blame win2k when we all know win2k is superior to win9x in every way. Its only the software developer who is coding the apps to utilize win9x and not win2k. .... battlenet is just a server... Actually connecting to battlenet and finding games and using the chat works perfectly. Its just when trying to join a game does this error show. This is defenitly and issue on the client end not a problem with battlenet. Since win98 works perfectly.

I dont know how I posted it in hardware. Any moderators want to pound me with a shovel then move my post?

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=_Glide...a=site%3Dgroups Try this url. groups.google.com is very useful tech issue's. I got so many results that I didnt bother to look there's probably an answer in there for you if you go through them all. .... I read through a couple and it may be that you have older traces of a card you used to have on there. If you dont then go through them I only went through a couple.

[RANT] Damned compaq's. Anyways maybe somebody here can help me I upgraded a compaq preserio model 7360 to windows 2000 and now Im having trouble finding drivers for it. Compaq is stupid. From the hardware down to even the way the put their cases together. I cant find what brand or model # of the video card or soundcard because its not in the book and its not on the website. Or at least I couldnt find it. They have some win2k drivers there but not for vid or sound. If anybody could provide me with any information on how or where to obtain drivers for this sardine can please let me know. Or even just help with the model numbers. I believe that the video card is an onboard via/trident. The motherboard is via. The soundcard I have no clue. The rest I have taken care of. Thank you very much. [END RANT]

I did. Couldnt find enough info. I guess I could have taken the via chipset number and checked via's website. I was running out of time so I had to go. I need to send an email to the owner with the drivers but it looks like Im going to have to go back over there. . I was hoping that finding drivers for win2k would be easier by now . I guess people still have the mentality that home users dont use win2k. Lame.
