I've been having this random problem in counterstrike source and day of defeat source where the game will suddenly crash causing the sound to loop and loop forever. I have to CTRL+Alt+Del to turn off the game. I have two monitors and decided to monitor the task manager to see if one of my processes started going nuts right before the crash. I noticed nothing, so I then monitored my cpu usage. The game typically runs at about 100% cpu usage, however when the game crashes the red kernel times bar peeks and holds at 100% usage! What could be causing the kernel times to peek like that and hold? There is a lengthy thread over here where everyone gives suggestions on how to fix the problem: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/sh...mp;pagenumber=1 Mainly their suggestions are doing things that shouldn't be done like turning off several features in the game. All of which don't really work. The game still randomly crashes. I can play forever, or sometimes only for 5 minutes. I've gone as far as to swap video card from nvidia to ati, and sound cards from sblive to sb audigy 2 zx. I've done a million of the other suggestions, but it still does it. What is troubling me is that kernel time peek and since I am one of the rare people that have two monitors, I think I may be the only one who has figured this out. Anyone have a clue what causes those times to peek? that may lend a hand into figuring out what is causing this problem.

I dont think anything graphicly intense is happening because there have been times when it happened while I was in a dark hall with not much going on.

I need to reformat and seeing as I have a 64bit processor, I would love to run windows xp 64, however, I dont konw if it will support all the drivers I need supported (such as my old ass scsi card and nikon ls2000 slide scanner). Is anyone running windows xp 64 and can comment on it? Should I just go with windows xp instead and wait for vista? Also, I think I am enrolled for the vista beta program. MS keeps sending me emails for their beta software but I don't really check it out anymore because I'm busy and not really into the whole scene that much. If I do and can get a copy of Vista beta 1, would it be worth while to install? Is it still extreamly buggy with tons of memory leaks? What drivers do I use? ect.... Any info would be nice. Thanks

I was using my computer today and while trying to load a webpage the computer froze and gave me a BSOD. I restarted and got the message ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM. I set my bios to all the defaults and only connected my hardrive with operating system to the computer. It still gave me the error. I then booted off my windows XP cd and tried to see if I would have the option to recover an install of windows XP. It didnt give me the option and just showed the drive as a blank drive. So I put it in my other computer and checked it out in Disk Management and it says: Disk 1 Unknown 189.92 GB Not Initialized 189.92 GB Unallocated. Does this mean the drive is dead? This drive had my windows partition and my files partition. I stored all my documents and important files on the second half of this drive. I was using another hardrive to run the windows backup program but I havent run it for a while. I tried to run it the other night since I just got a brand new 300 gb sata dirve 16mb c, but for some reason it didnt work. What should I do here? If I initalize the drive, I'll lose everything. I do own a copy of GetDataBack which I've used in the past when hardrives are failing, but I fear if I try to initalize the drive, it will destroy much of the data. Do I have any options or should I just hate my life?

The fat entries seem to have recovered little bits of files that are not important. However it did create 3 partitions that had my data. The first was my main drive, the second was my other files drive, and the third was the little bit left over that I didnt partition (a few megs) that must have been when I set it up before and messed up or something. Anyways, R-studio saved my life. Now I am just curious if there are any programs out there that can simply correct the partitions so I can plug the hardrive back into the computer and have everything up and running since I didnt lose any data. I'm getting another 300 gig 16m c 7200rpm sata maxtor (because the one I just bought is now being filled up with the contents of crashed drive), but in the meantime I would love to just plug this drive back in and use my computer. Is there any way to do that? Also, should I trash this drive or try to get warranty work on it? Warrany usually sends a referb drive, which I dont really want. I think the only reason this drive got screwed up was from a power surge the night before and a BSOD in the morning.

Strange.... why is it detecting so many FAT entries... this was a 2 partition NTFS drive converted to dynamic for shits and giggles.

R-Studio 2.0 shareware Demo was able to figure out that the drive existed, and has two partitions. I'm running a scan on it and it is finding a bunch of the following: still scanning...... NTFS MFT file entries ---- 300+ NTFS directory entries --- 2500+ NTFS boot sectors -------- 2 Fat file entries --------- 3000+ fat directories entries -- 6 fat boot sectors --------- 6 Has anyone used this software? Is it able to repair the partition so I can just plug it back into my comptuer and have it boot up as normal? I only have the demo, and I am not sure what it is able to do. I may have to get the full version if It can fix the partitions and leave all my data intact.

When I start up the computer, one of the svchost.exe instances hogs all my cpu and destroys my loading time. I always have to end the task in task manager or else I'll sit here forever waiting for stuff to load. Strange thing is, while playing a game today, it popped back on stealing all my cpus resources again. WTF is going on? Could it be a program disguised as svchost.exe running that is haxoring my boxor? I have Avast! anti virus running as well as a several time a week adaware scheduled cleaning. It's not caught anything strange....

ok, after it stopped hogging all the resources I was able to run that command in the cmd prompt. The service is Dnscache... could this be because my HOSTS file is humongous?

I have set my host file to block a huge amount of ads. Only problem now is when I visit sites like webshots and deviantart their advertisements come up as action canceled or page not found. When I try to click back, it tries to reload the advertisements rather than clicking back one page. This means I have to click several times to get back to the previous page. Can I make it not display anything? If I click back before it finds out that the page does not exist, it usually just goes right back w/o retrying. Thanks

The problem is, I want the ads to load in error slower. If I go to a page, sometimes the content will load before I get the error on the ad pages. If this occures, I can click the back button once, and be taken to the previous page. If the error page does come up for the ad, then I have to click back once for each ad. If it were to try and load forever, I would not have this problem.

I've been using the ms backup program for a while now. I started using it when I was running on a version of xp licensed from my school. I was able to get several licenses for xp from my school and ended up reformatting with the xp sp2 version they were offering. I had a problem and lost a bunch of data and when I went to get it from the backup file and it would not work because I wasn't on the same install of xp. I don't want to EVER run into this problem again. I would love a program that allows me to schedule an update every week. A rolling update would be nice so I don't have to delete my previous update before I make a new on (because I don't have enough space to make 2 at once) Thanks

I have setup my HOSTS file to redirect about 1000000000000 spam websites to 127.0.0.1 which works great. However alot of sites I visit, like someones webshots in community.webshots.com, have adds that take a while to load, and then load as a page not found. If I attempt to go back, it just tries to reload that advertisement. Example: http://www.webshots.com/search?query=cool+pictures&new=1&source=search_results_top if you go there, the advertisement on the right side of the page does not load for me. Instead it loads up as a page not found. Is there any way to stop that from loading all together so I can click back on the internet and have the page go back to the previous page rather than to the same page w/ that advertisement attempting to reload. Or, atleast, is there a way I can edit it so everything that comes up under 127.0.0.1 is a page I created that is just blank.

In Linux (using fedora) you dont login as the root. This means that you login as a user and you are unable to change some some things on the computer that could screw it up. Also it prevents you from installing applications. In order to make these changes you have to either be logged in as root or type in the root password before changing anything. Now, may moms and sisters computers always go to crap no matter how hard I try to teach them about not installing anything. I could make them regular users and restrict them from installing things or having things automatically installed via the interent, but there will still come a time when they may actually have to install something. Is there a way to make an admin account, have them logged in only as users, and if an event arises that requires an admin login, a box will popup and ask for the login and password? I believe the only thing they would ever need to do is install software and if I remember correctly on work computers I have used in the past, there was always a box that popped up and asked for admin logins and passwords. Can this be done?
