The company I work for has a program that essentially requires IE 8 to run. We use active x controls, so they must use the latest IE 8. Many of our distributors using IE 8 have difficulty setting up the exact settings we require. Also, some add-ons, such as google toolbar, interfere with the programs. It can cause runtime errors and crashing. Essentially, I'd like to have a custom IE 8 install package separate from IE 8 on their computer. This would maybe be a stripped down version that would come pre setup with our exact settings, and would disable any other add-ons. Heck, it could even disable browsing any other site except for the one site they need to use. I doubt this is possible, but I figured I'd ask anyways. Thanks!

so, I was logged on my admin account, setting stuff in the group policy, basically trying to lock everything down, not realizing that it was actually locking it down for the administrator user's accounts. I can now not add group policy into MMC, so I am totally locked out. What do I do short or reformatting to fix this? I've tried creating power user accounts, loggin in under "administrator" but I still have no luck... This is poop! POOP! Someone help!

I just built a new system and planned to run 3 monitors like I did on my previous system but it does not work. Previously in XP I ran an ATI all in wonder in the agp slot and a second PCI video card for my third monitor. It ran fine. I bought an Abit ip35 pro that has a pcie 16x slot and another large pcie slot. I set my main video card, nvidia 8800gtx, in the first pcie slot and my second card, ati 1650, in the second slot. I was able to install the drivers for the 8800gtx but when I install the drivers for the 1650, it says they are improper drivers and the device cannot start. I tried using the "standard VGA Graphics Adapter" but that give me a 'This Device cannot start' Error. I tried running the 1650 in the first PCIE slot and the second PCIE slot alone, and it worked, but when I try to run it as a second video card, in the second pcie slot, I cannot get it to start! Anyone have any suggestions?

I have a 500 gb external backup WD-Book hardrive attached to my system. The drive spins down after a period of inactivity. When I open up programs like photoshop or even my computer the drive spins up, I'm guessing to display me available space on the drive. This takes a few seconds, however its a pain in the ass. Can I prevent the drive from spinning up unless I actually am accessing files on the drive? Thanks -Arin

I want the drive to spin down when its not in use and I want to have it spin up when I actually try to access the drive either with my backup software or by opening it though my computer. I don't want to do option 1, 2 or 3.

Recently I've started leaving mozilla thunderbird running in the background while using my computer. I've been noticing thunderbird has been slowing down quite a bit and I recently realized its sucking up over 40 megs of memory! Does that sound normal for such a small simple program?

Does anyone know any way to block emails that show their important spam as images? The images arent refferenced in the email as a regular image file but usually as some sort of strange link. They also usually have shitty specs, dashes and lines in them. They also seem to load in stages Here is what I'm talking about: Here is one that is purely an image. Here is one that loaded as specs, then loaded the rest of the garbage image.

I just installed IE7 Beta 2 on my home computer last evening and I cannot get the tabbed browsing to display the tabs along the toolbar at the top. Tabbed browsing is enabled in the settings and when I go to close IE7, if I was in a tabbed setup, it asks me to close the tabs but for some reason I cant see the tabbed tool bar! Any ideas?

Try Alt T Alt O to get to the folder options. In the view tab, try the reset folders button.

Didnt fix the problem. In fact, turning on the tabbed browsing removed my entire toolbar.

When I was in college I took an operating systems class and I was given several of those orange Microsoft XP Pro cd keys. I recently had to reformat and my xp cd was scratched so I downloaded one of those 9 in 1 xp cd's that have all the different versions of xp (pro, corp, oem, retail, ect...). I forgot which version of xp I owned so I chose one of them and installed it. My legit cd key didn't work so I just ended up using another one I got off the net. Now I cant activate windows, naturally. Can I change my version of XP to the correct one so I can use my Legit Cd Key w/o reformatting again?

I just restarted my computer and when the user menu logon screen displays the windows log, it stops. I can still move the mouse and there appears to be some hard drive activity, but it will not display the list of users and let me log in! Same probiblem in safe mode. How can I disable the screen and either just have the auto login (only one user) from where I am?

everything blew up.... I think the drive is messed up. I did a repair install of xp and the drive would not boot into windows. Now after a full reinstall of xp the computer restarts at the loading screen.

I just restarted the computer, booted into windows xp w/ sp2 fine, downloaded and installed IE 7 public beta 2 and restarted the computer again. When I get to the windows logon screen before I can click on my user profile the computer screen goes blank, shows the mouse, sits for a few seconds and restarts. Some times I am able to click my user profile, but it brings up the password box (I dont have a password) briefly before it gives me the same black screen with the mouse before it reboots. I tried safemode. When the windows logon screen comes up with the user profiles, the same problem occurs. I tried the last known good configuration and the same problem occurs. I tried the VGA mode and the same problem occurs. I even set the bios to the default settings but I get the same problem! I'm stuck! I cant get into windows, I cant uninstall IE 7 which seems to be causing the problem so what should I do? Should I put in the xp cd and do one of those repair installs? Will that mess any of my settings up? What about the system restore? is there a way to bring up the system restore with out fully loading into windows so I could roll it back right before I installed IE 7? I'm at a bit of a loss here... Anyone else have this problem or have any solutions for me?

Yes. I did a repair install and had to get the uninstall folder off a friends machine. Its back to normal now.

For some reason I can't click on videos on the net and have them play in windows media player. When I click on a link it launches WMP10 and says: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is located on a removable storage card, insert the storage card." It does this for every video file and sites like www.streetfire.net will no longer play the videos either. I check all the settings and I they look the same. I haven't changed anything in windows media player 10. I even re-downloaded the install file and installed it again. I also turned off my firewall and nothing changed. Whats going on? EDIT, fixed. For some reason under tools -> options -> player, the [ ] connect to the internet check box was unchecked. I never even noticed this option before.

Well I was forced to do a repair install. Now everything is messed up. I cant Run, reinstall or uninstall IE 7 beta 2. My motherboard drivers are also giving me problems.

Wow, I just went back in to reactivate over the net and it late me type in my legit key and it worked. Didnt work before... strange?

So is there any hope? Could I do a repair install using a copy of the legit cd even though its oem and not retail? I can get another copy from my college.

Yeah, I dont need to just change the key, but I need to change the version of windows.

I have several gmail accounts setup in mozilla thunderbird. For some reason, all the accounts deliver to the same account group "Archive" and I can not change this. When I compose and send a new email, the email is delivered correctly, but a copy is not stored in my sent items folder in thunderbird. If I log into gmail, a copy is stored in the sent items folder. Also, if I send an email while logged into the webmail, the sent email is delivered to me in my inbox on thunderbird. Here is what I want: When I load up thunderbird I wand all my gmail emails to be delivered to my inbox. I want all my sent mails sent from the webmail to be delivered to my sent items box. When I send an item from within thunderbird, I want that item to be saved in my sent items box. Is this possible?

I run Avast! Virus protection and every few minutes I get a small popup from avast warning me of an LSASS Exploit (sxp) and then it lists my wan ip and a port number. I have no idea what is going on here. I have full virus protection and have scanned my entire computer several times. I also used their removal tool and it did nothing. I also am running windows xp sp2 with all the updates, which should have patched this old exploit, yet it keeps popping up. I'll even run a netstat -a to make sure I dont see any funny connections and I dont. I've also run a full spy doctor scan and found nothing. Any clue here?

I just decided to block port 445 with a registry hack since my version of windows (xp with sp2)_ is not listed on the security page by Microsoft.
