i uninstalled norton antivirus from my home pc, which has win98SE on it. uninstall went fine. but i went to reboot & nothing!!! it just hangs there. i tried a boot-up disk & put norton cd back in. then it did a scan on every file, which took about 10 hours. but now hte screens just black. not real sure how just uninstalling norton can make this happen. i really hope there's a way to get it back up, i'd rather not have to reinstall everything.

i just got a copy of this game. i tried to install it on my winXP home edition. everything installed fine, but when i went to play the game, i received an error about directX along the lines of: 'D3DERR_INVALIDCALL' then some other junk. i have dl'd the newest directX(9.0b i think, whatever new one is). i also tried installing this on my win98 pc, but no luck. is it just the game or something?

i did run dxdiag & everything was fine. i went to microsoft's site & reinstalled 9.0b as well. i'll do the system specs when i get home from work. it's strange cos this is the only game i'm having problems with.

it's a creativeSBlive card. guess i'll check with their site. but it is odd how i received the same error on a 98 pc.

I have a win98 pc that will not play cd's. it plays sounds when turning on/off the pc. but when i place a cd in, i get an error: Error ID = 0x80040256. Remedy ID = 0x00000000 then it says something about no sound card, etc. there is a soundcard & i've tried troubleshooting but i cannot find the error. help!![/img]

on a related note, is there a way to find when the pc was setup? i.e. what date the pc was initially setup?
-
thanks, that program worked great!! just what i needed.

right clicking on my computer then properties & the key in the middle, with OEM? i didn't think that was it.

anyone know of a good password program that checks strength of passwords on a network? also, how about a good IDS program for a network. i'm on win2k server. with a mix of win98/win2k/winxp. mainly win2k tho.

i have a 3com firewall (for under 25 users) and was wondering how i go about opening up port 25 for telnet?
-
Quote: Port 23 for telnet Port 25 for SMTP 23? i was told 25. i even went into ms-dos (on a win2k pc) and typed 'telnet', then 'open IPAddress 25' where 25 is the port to open & it worked. got that info from microsoft.com

i have a dell dimension 4500. the other day, i moved the pc, when i plugged everything back, there was no sound. i checked the soundcard internally & it's plugged in fine. and all settings are fine, but there's no sound. any idea's?
-
after i moved it. some game (dinksmallwood or something) i got off the net. sound didn't work before or after. i'll try the headphone idea the o/s is XP
-
yup. i checked everything over & over. plugged into the same port, plugged in correctly into themselves, etc. the weird thing is, i was playing a game 2 days ago & the sound worked, but then i quit & the sound no longer worked. i don't get it.

is possible to network these 2 types of pc's. i've tried the wizard in xp home and it won't work on my 98se pc.

i have setup a network. i can see one computer on the other, but no files. i have enabled file sharing. after this, how am i able to see files on the other pc

i have finally setup both computers i have on a network. i can see either one on the other. now i'm trying to setup ICS, when i do, on either one, i get a message saying "Your network configuration is not complete. Please install your network hardware before installing Internet Connection Sharing." any ideas as to why this pops up?
-
it's rather odd actually & can't believe it still works (well, as of last nite at least). i removed interet sharing on the pc that has at&t broadband installed originally(pc1). but, i kept the info from the floppy created thru ICS wizard on the other pc(pc2). it seems to work fine. oh, i also deleted the dial-up adapter on pc1. but kept it on pc2. don't ask me, i was just messin' around with it. also, the 1st time i installed it, internet worked on pc2 but not pc1. that's why i deleted ics/dial-up from pc1. not quite sure why it still works

i finally got it working. thanks. i'll check into the sygate idea
