Yep! Much better

THX CM I'll have a look at that.

Your modem is an internal one. I'm afraid you are stuck for the time being. It seems they have no Win2k driver for it, only Win95/98/NT4 You better try to ask your isp to trade it for an external one, which you will access through a nic card. BTW I know a little bit about Alcatel. They are not much aware of end-user probs. They are only interested in doing business with big isps. Sorry

Hi CM! Thanks for the Snitz link. I'll have a look at it. As far as Ultimate BB is concerned, obviously I know it's great ... he he ... we are on NTCompatible are'nt we? I've been told that it is cgi/unix only based and that it would not fit a mixed Lotus Notes/M$ IIS/SQL based environment. I wonder if my provider is not trying to screw me, trying to sell a proprietary solution What do you think about that?? THX

I have tried all possible combinations on different machines and/or configs. My conclusion is : do not try to change any service setting or you will screw your setup, sooner or later or sloooooow it down at the best, unless you exactly know what you are doing and why. Gains are negligible anyway. Win2k will summon the right service when it need it. Let it do its os job. Too much tweaking in this area is definitely bad. Yes, I have read a lot of bull$$$t at many websites, taken from Microsoft doc. My 0.02 cent : Be happy with your basic os setup. You better tweak video, connexion speed, sound, etc.

I have 192 megs (3x64)also on my machines. 99% of the time smooth as a baby's ... face. Pagefile is fixed 384 megs (192x2)on fastest drive. Best combination for me (especially for UT). Should be OK for you if you do not do huge image processing.

Where is it? Seems to have been kicked off by his isp? I need some bios tweaking stuff but can no longer find his great site. THX

You're right jdul. Nobody cares about the topic which started this thread. I myself dunno care about what I'm posting here. The important thing is LET'S KEEP IT ALIVE! I'm happy. I have done my duty. I'll have a beer right now well

NEVER DRINK ANY OF THOSE LIQUID SH$$$ !!! Your health is at stake!!! Vine (French or Italian preferably) or beer (Belgian if possible): vitamins, tannin, oligo-elements, etc. That's it.

Plz do not flame AOL users. They have been corrupted, intoxicated or have smoked -or drunk- the wrong stuff. Maybe they have grown up among Apple boxes (arrrrrggghhh...)??? They are just innocent lost souls we have to help to find their way back to the ancient and black art of PC hacking.

Same for me. It seems that access to this forum is getting slower and slower. Both from work and from home (adsl connection), sometimes even at off-peak hours. Have noticed that since a few weeks ago... Any idea, Admins?
-
I have had the same problem on one of my boxes some time ago. W2K would not go to the end of installation. The solution was to unplug my usb webcam. The installer did not like something being hooked to the usb port (driver prob?). Then it installed OK.
-
You may try to adjust the receive window in W2K registry. By default, W2K is not optimised for broadband. Great site for tweaking cable and adsl at http://www.dslreports.com and http://navasgrp.home.att.net/tech/cable_dsl.htm There you will find a lot of advices and tools to optimize your connection. It worked for me. Rgds

Since I have applied service pack 1, my network connections no longer save user names and passwords to connect to my ISPs. I have searched in help, through this forum, tried to tamper with policies, to no avail... Does anybody have a clue?? THX
-
Thanks Clutch for giving some of your time to my prob. The connections I'm talking about are VPN/PPTP to connect to my isps via ADSL. For that type of connection you have an user logon in the form "username@ispname.somedomainname" and a password which is anything you define. The user name is a string given by the isps. You cannot change this. I have 2 win2k machines and 2 win98 machines on my home network. The win98 ones rememeber names/passwords while the W2K ones no longer do since sp1 was applied.

JdulMage You definitely have my support to lead this thread to a world record. Hey, boyz n girlz! What about an entry in the Guiness book???
-
Sorry I have to push this one to the top. This prob is really boring. I did not find any solution. I have done a full install again. My Internet connections still do not save user logon names and passwords. Really boring and weird. I have to type in all the stuff everytime I want to connect to any of my isps. Any idea? THX

Here are my results: BP6 2xCels 366@561 Elsa Erazor X2 Quake 3 demo001 WIN2K Textures---------16bits------32bits smp_0------------72fps-------66fps smp_1------------57fps-------53fps realtime_smp_1---53fps-------52fps WIN98------------58fps-------54fps These drivers rock in WIN2K! WIN2K is now FASTER than Win98 But...UT stutters and pagefiles like hell! (game's d3d dll problem again I believe). UT randomly locks in ogl mode...f*** glide engine).
-
If it is an external modem (I have an Alcatel 1000 ADSL), you don't need any driver as it is seen as any ethernet device. Only the protocol is important (VPN/PPTP or PPPOe) according to what your ISP requests.
-
In fact, here, tis the opposite. I have less paging after having applied SP1. Dunno why. IT is not a science. It's an art. With some black magic in it.

2 GeForce2 or not 2 GeForce2...that is the question?
FrogMaster replied to oldspice's topic in Hardware
Here is my NVidia story: I own/have run under Win2K TNT2 (Guillemot), TNT2 Ultra (Guillemot), GeForce SDR (Leadtek)and GeForce DDR (Elsa). I never had a problem with these cards which could not be easily solved (never had any prob under Win98). The only prob I have is with UT: slowish D3D and no opengl since 5.14. The culprit is not Nvidia but the game engine itself which is basically a glide engine. I will not buy a GeForce2 thu. Not enough performance extra as compared with 256-DDR. I'll wait for next generation (next Xmas?). On the other hand, I never got my SLI Voodoo2s to work under Win2K because of zero-level support from 3dfx. -
HI! I have also a pair of Voodoo2s laying around and think about giving them a last chance to run UT in SLI glide, which should be great. Which drivers are you using? The nt4 set modified by 3dfx themselves or the so-called "hacked" one. Both are available at reactorcritical'site. THX

Yep. Very typical symptom of an overheating graphic chip. You may have to check if the cooler/fan assembly is well stuck to the chip. Very often, the job is very badly done by the video card manufacturer. Pop up the cooler off the chip, clean out their crappy glue, apply a nice coat of thermal compound and put back the original cooler or preferably a bigger/better one.
