I'm 100% sure I won't buy it. Does not mean I won't "test" it thu

A new beta bios for the BP6 has been posted at Abit's ftp. Name of file : BP6ru125.bin dated May 17. Seems as it is an upgraded RU version with 1.25 HPT bios. Did anybody already flashed it? BTW, in the same beta directory, there are the 1.25 drivers for Win2K and Win9x.

Nvidia Detonator 5.22 and 5.30 kernel crashes.... (nv4_disp.
FrogMaster replied to DOScrash's topic in Hardware
This is a well-known symptom. The P5A does not supply enough 3.3 Volts power to the AGP bus. You may try: - downclock the TNT2U (bad) - update to latest ALI agp drivers - flash the Guillemot TNT2U special bios (have a look at their site, this bios will downclock default speed) - read the faq at www.tweak3d.net/faq/index.shtml they give a hint re P5A and other sh***y ALI-based boards. Change your mobo. Sorry -
I gave them a try. No particular improvement noticed. Opengl still broken in UT, so I stay with 5.14... As far as hibernation is concerned, I am very happy with it. Tis nice to find my desktop exactly as it was. OK, it is for home use so I have no prob with somebody switching on the box. Would not do that at work of course.

I used to be a 3dfx fan in the past. I have owned Voodoo 1 and SLI Voodoo 2s. I have been upset by the incredibly low level of support for these board not to speak about limitations of color depth and resolution. I don't even say anything about Win2K support. 3dfx have left their customers in the dark. My life changed when I bought my first TNT2, then TNT2 U, then GeForce SDR and DDR. Next step will be NV20/25 or whatever, for sure. I hate 3dfx. They have betrayed me. When I am consulted about the choice of a video card, I always warn people to stay away from 3dfx products. If you have a look at their own user forum, you shall understand what I mean. Very few people seem to be happy with the way they take (no)care of their customer base. For me they are dead. Period.

BTW, does anybody knows what this realtime switch does?
-
Finally, I succeeded in having this realtime switch trick from bp6.com work : lock-ups in smp mode seem to have gone (det. 5.25). The fps performance, as all of us have noticed, is still around -20% as compared with monoprocessor (1024x768/32bits), which is bad. So we have not yet got a real solution
-
Exactly the same symptoms as slkh here Tried all possible settings, tweaks, different brand of beer, smoking something else ... nogo! Q3A SMP on BP6 is bulls**t. Either it locks or performance is 20% worse. I'm getting fed up with this moboard.

Does someone knows how to redirect the hiberfil.sys file to another drive? Win2k is installed on my C: drive. I would like to have the hibernate file on the E: drive which is faster, as I have already done for the pagefile.sys. I did not find anything in Windows help and there is apparently no particular option in the power management panel. THX in advance.

Hibernate and relocation of hiberfil.sys
FrogMaster replied to FrogMaster's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have noticed that a system may not recover and hang at boot up if the hibernation file is fragmented. You should try to delete the file, defrag and optimize completely E: from within Win98. This will provide clean and contiguous space for the file next time you hibernate. The fact that the file sits on E: should not be a problem at all as this has been set up at install time. -
Cool site indeed ... Strange lifeform though. The language must be an alien dialect synthesized from various human and extra-terrestrial phonems and syntaxes gathered by some Seti programme somewhere in the outer space. I wonder if this thing could be JdulMage him...itself... <<<BEWARE THEY ARE AMONG US !!!>>>

Please give us as many details as possible about your setup. Drive letters, where the drives are attached to, where is your cd-rom, etc. Where is Win98 installed ... space available on drives ...

Real Magic Hollywood + hybernation (search didn't work)
FrogMaster replied to 5t3ph3n's topic in Hardware
I don't know about this particular prob but you're right. It seems that most old posts (not so old in fact) have disappeared/been deleted or lost. So there is no reason to draw one's flame-thrower as soon as somebody is asking for help. Maybe the Admins will give an explanation??? -
Yep. But as far as I remember, you cannot go back to fat 16 if you wish to ???

Hibernate and relocation of hiberfil.sys
FrogMaster replied to FrogMaster's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Thx Man. I came to almost the same conclusion. When going to hibernation, W2k must write something to the boot sector so that the system does know next time it boots that it has to load hiberfil.sys right into memory instead of loading bits of stuff the regular way. If this is a part of the very beginning of the boot process, when the bios is interested only by the C: drive, then there is nothing to do, I'm afraid. When I have some spare time, I'll grab a disk editor and give a look from within Win98 (I have dual boot) to the boot sector and also to the ntloader to do a comparison between having left Win2k with and without hibernation, and see where the command sits, if any. -
Partition Magic will do the job without a glitch if you have dual boot. I keep W2K/Win98 dual boot because it is nice to be able to do stuff on the W2K partition from within Win98 without being bothered by file protection etc. For example, I can defrag W2K fastly and cleanly with Norton from Win98. BTW, PM is a very powerful program and a must have.

Well, I tried the 5.25 set. - no prob to install - w2kcoolbits work - no performance change compared to other 5.xx - seem very stable thu - opengl broken in UT as with 5.17 and 5.22 - still no smp support So I go back to 5.14 which seem to be the last chance drivers for me
-
I didn't try them yet but I noticed two interesting differences compared with previous releases: - the new nv4_disp.dll is much bigger (+330 KB, which is quite alot), - there is an additional nvstat.sys file... Any clue about those two? I'll install and do some benchmarking tonight.

I know this symptom (I posted a topic some time ago about software being able to destroy hardware). If you see only an horizontal line means completely out of sync vertical signal and maybe dead vertical scanning because of too high refresh rate Either your video card is dead or the drivers send insane sync frequencies commands to it. You may try to reinstall another version of the drivers. Take courage!
