Should be no prob here. Just assign a fixed IP address within the private range (ex. 10.0.0.10, subnet mask 255.0.0.0)to the TCPIP config of your local area network connection. This seems to be a restriction of PPTP/VPN as some ISPs do not want you to share the Internet connection (it is possible to bypass this restriction thu by using a router/firewall or another PC which will do the DHCP on your lan's side while showing a unique address to your ISP). Then you config the new connection to your ISP choosing address assigned by remote host, remote default gateway, etc. so that your ISP will do the DHCP and assign a new address for every session.

S3 Virge Dx/Gx works without prob as second, or first if you like, video card. Win2K has built-in drivers for it. Boot PCI then refine setup in control panel. The only problem is that S3 Virge is real super-over-the-average crap and will slooooooow down things I have given up dual display until I find a fast pci card, I wonder which one thu.

If your ISP uses PPTP and VPN, then your config should be the same than mine. - First, you have to configure your local area connection with the fixed IP address and subnet mask provided by your ISP. For example 20.0.0.10 and 255.0.0.0 - Second, you must create a new connection. Choose VPN, Enter the default IP address of the modem, 10.0.0.138 in my case, Enter your DSL user name in the form xxx@yyyy.zzz, Enter your password, Give a name to this connection, Should be done. - Third, right-click on the newly created icon to finalise configuration (security, encryption or not, etc), When done double-click the icon to connect to your ISP (may take 10 seconds or so). When connected, launch IE. You're done. Hope this helps )

OK ... the beer case definitely solves the ... case. You're a wise man )

LM is right. Put your pagefile on another drive, if possible the fastest of your setup, on a separate channel. I have Win2K system on the first partition of HD 1 on ide 1 and the swap file on another drive on channel 1 of ATA66 : fast and clean swaps

Yeah! You would definitely see the difference between SDR and DDR if you play 1024x768 in 32-bit. I have a similar rig and I personally saw the difference when I switched to DDR. After having played 32-bit, you would not go back to 16.

For sure he is around, maybe under a new name. Did not you notice a few insane and childish posts recently? Hey Jdul, come on, post something innovative and challenging!

You need a plain old MS-Dos formatted floppy with Dos system files on it (msdos.sys, io.sys, command.com) and from which you boot. If you have such a disk, it must work because your PC will never see or load NT.

Yep! Sell both and get a GeForce DDR! That's the best way to go for now. BTW, I'm not at all enthusiast about the first reviews of GTS and new Voodoos I've read. Neither performances nor the prices are relevant I'll stay stuck with my DDR and shall wait another 6/10 months for next generation, when there is really a significant step done. Anybody's opinion welcome.

You're right. This forum in one of the coolest ones out there. I've learned alot browsing around the posts, asking for tips and giving a few hints when I am able to help. People generally try to keep it sane even if sometimes a few fuses blow up! For this forum to be perfect, the adms should add one more section where we could tell funny stories about real life situations most of us have met in our professional activities, with only one condition, these stories should necessarily be IT related. Maybe an idea for a book??? I just throw this on the table. -
Hi guys! Can somebody explain what makes the difference between a 15$ NIC and a 100 or 200$ one? On the paper most of them look the same and often are built around the same chipset. Apart from the brand premium and bureaucracy overhead costs at large corporations HQs, what does justify the price gap? Would a professionnal experimented in installing networks give some insight? What does guide his choice from a technical/operational point of view? Nic cards are so common these days that I wonder if anybody still cares about this component. Thanks alot for giving advice on that subject which will help me setting up a new home network.

For hints about networking an ADSL modem and getting all the juice from it, you may try: dslreports.com --> great site with a lot of hints/tweaks and a specialized forum. speedguide.net --> tricks and tweaks for cable/adsl alcatel.com --> download user's guide of Alcatel 1000 ADSL modem (the one which is discontinued). There is a lot of network configuration examples with detailed IP adessing policies that are relevant whatever the modem. Good luck

Hi guys! Does anybody knows how to set to zero second the ten second countdown of scandisk after a dirty reboot? I have seven partitions in my box. It's very boring when W2K decides to scan all of them, waiting for 10 seconds for each disk before starting its job - 70 seconds in total! I did not find any related *.ini file or registry entry for that. Windows help has no clue. Any idea?
-
Claus Hansen Ries, Du bist der Man! It works! I did try chkdsk.exe and autochk.exe but did not try chkntfs.exe because all my partitions are Fat32. Now I can dirty-reboot without boring with this delay. Thx! You know? I'm happy

Please see the topic I started in the Networking section of this forum. I use an Alcatel 1000 ADSL external modem. External modems are great because they need no driver at all. The nic does the job to talk to the modem through the ethernet link. Nic cards will run without any hassle on most oses. Under Win2k and Win98, they are PnP devices. As the guys suggest, just pick a good medium range brand.

Nvidia 5.16 are available at reactorcritical and 3dchipset. Unfortunately they are for Win9x
-
Anybody out there??? I push this post up the list because I really need to know the trick. I have quite a lot of hard lockups when playing Q3A and have to reboot the dirty way. I'm really p****d off with this 10 sec delay.

Beware man! There is a bunch of e-xtremists around there. They believe this forum is their exclusive property. They are mad with anything outside their narrow vision of the world. They never went farther than the outskirts of their village. Be warned.. You have my sympathy...
