Machine restarts randomly and abruptly VERY FREQUENTLY. Plea
FrogMaster replied to shassouneh's topic in Software
Well, I think Alec belongs to that kind of very creative people who are thinking aloud most of the time. Fingers and keyboard simply cannot cope with the speed of their brain, especially when they do multithread or even parallel thinking when exploring the limits of a given knowledge. They ask (themselves?) questions while trying to find answers and share their thinking process with others, looking for feedback at the same time. I call it shared thinking process - like you do at a brainstorming session. Left and right brains are competing all the time. Logical process on the left one, communications process on the right one. I hope this does not hurt you in any way. For me it is rather a compliment and the expression of a talent. -
Just taken from a fresh install of W2K on one of my machines - screen capture, load into PaintShop Pro and read values: Red: 58 Green: 110 Blue: 165 I really like this deep blue too

OK, you have got the point re the a/d thing for cd to cd and cd to minidisk that can be done all digital (well maybe not so obvious as far as minidisks are concerned because of the huge compression applied to the signal). One exception (a big one) though is when you want to copy and clean old invaluable vinyl disks to save the content and the media. Another exception would be when you want to record live music. Well, anyway, I too cannot tell much the difference with my ears because of too many years of guitar playing at badly pumped up volume

Sorry, all zeros and ones are not born equal, even in the digital world. Background noise, quantization errors, missing data can also be translated into apparently clean digital stream (ecc mechanisms are there for this purpose). Shitty consumer sound cards, low-grade power supplies, super simple a/d and d/a converters, phase-jitter produced by mass-produced cd burners because of cheap electro-mechanical engineering, noisy effect processors, the list is as long as you want. Have a look at a recording studio and see what kind of equipment they use.

I use EZ cd Creator and never had a coaster with it. Really good and straightforward UI. I do simple stuff, back-ups, archives and the like with the PC. For serious music stuff I use a stand-alone Philips CDRW deck. Slightly off-topic but for those of you guys who own a deck, the following trick may be helpful. Normally, the deck will only take recordable audio cds which are more expensive and protected (the deck reads and checks a special track on the audio cd before setting itself ready for recording). There is a very simple trick to have it take data cd-roms: - insert a blank audio cd (you need only one as the same can be used thousands of times!) - let the deck search for proper format, do its stuff until it is happy and set itself ready for recording - gently force open the tray with one of your fingers nails. The tray will come and open itself without protesting (effortless on my deck) - put a data cd-rom and push the tray a little bit, it will close itself and take the data disk thinking it is an audio disk - record and enjoy

... Frontpage Express from the W2K CD? I am too lazy - tis too late here - to figure it out. I have upgraded my little sister box to W2K but now she is screaming for Frontpage in order to do stuff on her website. It did not install by default but apparently it is there in a bunch of blah.dl_ files and cabs. Help much appreciated from some of you expert hackers out there. She will not leave me alone until I install it. I am scared

I guess Win2k is still looking for the previous primary display. I see two solutions: 1 - put back any agp vid card in slot to boot windows in vga then choose the Voodoo as primary by messing around the screens 1 and 2 icons in display properties, reboot to have the Voodoo as primary. 2 - boot in safe mode. I guess it will boot the pci card if only video card in the system (and set as pci boot first in bios). I use to mess a lot on my dual-display box (see specs). Sometimes Win2k seems to want to stick to one of them

Anyone? I got it as a gift from my wife She knows about my weaknesses Any opinion? Looks like genetic baby of Half Life and Unreal with a Soldier of Fortune flavour. BTW, it runs flawlessly under W2K. Regards

Network and dial-up connections have disappeared!!!!

It seems to me I remember the same problem was solved in an old thread on this board, maybe last year. You may want to try a search into old posts. I dunno for how long the admins here keeps old posts. -
Tried it with Win98 : I did not notice anything special. That seems to confirm something may be happening in W2K as I noticed some faster closing of some apps. Well, it does not do any harm anyway

Win98 for playing around, NT4 for professional activities. I have still to know what a bsod is under nt4, except for a very specific hardware config. Well, hardware support is a little bit limited in NT4. Win98 is (was) more fun in a way. I agree with above statement when it comes to serious networking. Win98 is a toy. NT4 was a man's OS. W2K is a breeze. Hehhe, my 0.000000002 cents No, really, pro networking environment was the realm of NT4. But now, W2K just smokes any other os in this respect.

Just put the text below in a text editor and save as for example irq8.reg then double click on it to load it into the registry REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl] "IRQ8Priority"=dword:00000001 Regards

Super clean Messy A shame I can't believe it!

It works, that's the way I do it for boxes I put together for relatives, family, friends, parents ... Resident I386 folder on some partition and registry key pointing to it. ... I even do it for my own boxes ... no hassle

looking for a program to make my Processer work slower
FrogMaster replied to gluev's topic in Software
You can try an hardware solution in case you want to avoid software overhead. This will work provided you have an ISA slot on your mobo. 1 - disable all serial ports in bios 2 - plug in old ISA serial card (a few euros/$ second hand at Surcouf in Paris) 3 - set up speed - maybe also irq/io address with jumpers available on old cards 4 - load generic legacy drivers (irq may need to be reserved first in bios for legacy ISA) This may work. I used that kind of solution to get an old Midiator midi serial interface box to work on fast W2K machine. Your mileage may vary.. Kind regards -
Hey, Brian, What happened? Tell us more about those smart *sses so that nobody else get fubared

Bump! Anybody else tried it, tested, benchmarked? Constructive answers please, no "I didn't expected anything from that" bullshit that do not bring any value-add...

Please, never use internal modems! They suck CPU resources and are POS. USR 56k external is a good modem (for me, I had only good experiences with them, now I am on ADSL ) Yeah, stay with an external one, that's it

J'ai l'impression que ta demande est maintenant méchamment sortie du sujet I have the feeling that your thread has now badly gone off topic No need for babelfish, I'm Frenglish or Englifrog depending on the mood Second translation with more correct spelling was not so bad. By the way, I have no clue apart from loading some Micro$ app as said -
Really weird It seems that progs load faster ... Tried:- - 1stPage html editor, seems to load and quit twice faster - PhotoShop, opens very fast, same for PaintShop Pro - Quake3, loads so fast I can no longer see the console window with all the loading log stuff Irq 8 is shown as being owned by realtime cmos on my system. I am not sure it is subjective. Apps really seem to load faster. Is there a way to measure this accurately? I am puzzled... If true, this is a great discovery

I love parallel port Zip drive because I can move it around to any computer. Very handy with laptops or standard office workstations which have no cd writer (99% of them). They are also very commonly used in the graphics industry to exchange files, modify them and send back to customer. Do not think of it as a home gadget but rather as a portable professional tool. If it helps for better productivity, then it's good.
