I had similar NVdisp BSOD problems with 21.81. So far 21.85 has been problem free. I have already seen one display glitch (black areas of tooltips) with 21.81 that has been cured by 21.85. :}

I am still boycotting Creative Labs over the W2K driver issue. I just don't trust them anymore. :}

I found the occasional freeze when exiting an OpenGL based game like Quake3Arena (but curiously not with a pro 3D app). Upgrading to the 14.10 WHQL drivers, and the latest beta of NVMax, *and* the latest rev of PowerStrip 3.0x has made this problem go away. Since it is working now, I am not going to go back and figure out just which app change actually fixed the problem, but you might want to try up[censored] any of these if you are using them. :}

Agreed. I am stoked that XP is running so well in the beta stages. I look forward to the final release and the +6 months time frame when things will really be smokin'. Mooxooh, you do *not* want to throw down flames with me on OpenGL. *Trust* me on this. Have a nice day and may your frames per second be high. :}

In order to get Nero 5.5+ to work, I have to uninstall Nero after any OS upgrade (like RC1 to RC2), reboot, then reinstall Nero. The ASPI layer also has to be reinstalled. Once I have done that, everything in Nero has worked (almost) perfectly. I am running one of those very tasty Yamaha 16x burners by the way. This machine is running an Intel BX chipset at 1ghz. I only have one consistent bug under the RC2 build and that is Nero will choke on burning some CDs with a single large file (like a video, for example). Simulation works fine, but I end up with a coaster at some random point. Since some large files work consistently, and some don't, I have been attributing it to the files themselves. I will put one of my other burners (SCSI 4x) on another machine running XP RC2 (dual Intel VP6) and see if the problem is repeatable under those circumstances. :}

As a professional who uses OpenGL for professional uses, I can say categorically that your information regarding Windows XP and OpenGL performance is entirely incorrect. Windows XP is hands down the best OS Microsoft has ever delivered (I am running 32 and 64 bit versions). This is with professional cards and applications as well as games and consumer cards. As a gamer, I guarantee that my Quake3Arena game on my fun machine hands down runs fastest, smoothest, and gibs most effectively under Windows XP than it does under Windows 98 or Windows 2000. You are correct that he should have been posted in the game forum, of course. But your groundless rant/flame on 3DMark/Nvidia sends the credibility of your entire post into the dumps. Pity. :}

Actually,the game is ugly period. Set it to 800x600 and at least the pixels will be smaller (harder to see). It is probably the ugliest graphics work (8 bit color and 640x480!???) I have seen in a decade. Fantastically and inexpicably unprofessional. But the gameplay rocks, so I play it a lot anyway... :}

agreed. but to be honest, since I haven't had to activate it and I don't get any stupid reminders to do so, as far as I am concerned, it is (effectively) cracked. what am I missing (specifically) regarding 2517? Autopatch-wise, it is behaving the same as all previously leaked releases? :}
-
Normally THC you are spot on, but 2517 is auto-patched and available (and trojan free) on a number of newsgroups. Everything is crackable. Sorry, mate. That said, you are right that you must check closely... Peace, :}

since this rev 2401 of the OS is a very old beta (we are on 2505 RC1 now), and I haven't had this problem running Q3A on my system, I might suggest you update your OS to fix the problem. It has been very stable since v2495. :}

in the past I have run screen font smoothing and also would run in a higher res with larger font sizes just to get clean readable type. Something that makes the type readable at lower resolutions is the sort of thing Microsoft *should* be focussing their energies on. It affects every aspect of every applications and every use of everything people do on their computer. :} -
they do! and so far very well on my SMP system. I haven't had any problems with the santa cruz, but I know some people have mentioned DX8 issues. Well, since DX8 is built into XP, I think these drivers might be worth a shot for those people. :}

the big question is how these work in Windows2000...will find out! :}

How to make dialup connection remember username / password?
Dragon-Lord replied to Mooxooh's topic in Networking
note that I have seen this with earlier builds but not with RC1. :} -
it could be the alcohol talking, but it really looks to me like this thread got really stupid really quick... let's move along or get back on topic please... :}

yes, and lest we forget that it was 3dfx's own greed and arrogance that told all their OEMs to f**k off when 3fdx bought STB and took over manufacturing of all their own boards and chips. They did this when they owned the market and within a very short time they were a footnote. I loved my SLI voodoo2s but 3dfx lost the race through their own decisions... :}
-
agreed, even when I could get anything from Roxio/Adaptec to run, it would dump the cd with buffer underrun errors. Nero has worked flawlessly throughout all betas for me. Now I am really glad I paid for that software! :}

Yeah, but everyone needs to feel appreciated from time to time. This site kicks ***. I consider it essential reading every day and it is my first stop for tech updates etc. thank you again and again guys. :}
-
To be honest, you have known you were going have to replace that voodoo card for at least a year now. Not that I don't agree with you that nvidia, 3dfx, and microsoft should work this out, ASAP. Since there are a *lot* of legacy voodoo cards out there in use by people who don't inhabit these newsgroups and bulletin boards, for example. Is MS going to put a "bad voodoo" sticker on the box somewhere? I suspect that all of the people with rights on that driver source code wanted just one thing to release what is clearly useless code to them for a dead architecture...money. And MS probably said "hey, we are paying for the engineers to fix your code...you should be splitting those costs for us." It always comes down to money somewhere, and I can't for the life of me see why any of the legacy tech holders would restrict nvidia from passing on code that no one but MS (and a million customers who paid their salaries for years) can do anything with or even cares about... So I think the licensee issue may be a red herring or a convenient legal justification since nvidia surely wants to force the replacement of voodoo with nvidia tech while they own the market...simplest explanation makes the most sense to me. watch this one develop... :}

No bios rev would fix this problem for me (I am now using the latest 1.2 enhanced series), only driver rev 1.03b. Any later drivers take the whole system to hell and back again - bus contention across the board. Anytime there is disk activity everything else (sound, mouse, 3D, you name it), slows, stops, or stutters. And mine is an onboard HPT370 on the VP6... So, try the 1.03b driver set with whatever bios rev you need and see if that doesn't do the trick. And the funniest thing is that the 1.2 series drivers were released officially today, and they are crapola as well...sigh. Anyone know the magic trick I am missing here? :}

Yearout, great site reference! Thanks... Now, I wonder if any of those utilities work on my Itaniums... :}

Eddie may be brusque, but he has a point. All the systems that I have seen that shipped with Win95 are not suitable for WinXP. However, if you are lucky, and want to upgrade, just borrow someone's copy of the Win98 upgrade CD (like a zillion people you know) and upgrade to 98...just before you upgrade to WinXP. Just make sure you actually buy your WinXP upgrade. It is most decidely worth it. :}

I guess no one answered because they didnt have any suggestions for you. You have a unique situation, as UT has been installing under Win2K without problem since its release last year. Sounds to me like you had something else munged that was causing the problem for UT. Sorry you had to jump through such hoops. :}

I found driver revs up to v3.75 on their US FTP site, and the latest versions allowed me to install my Astra 2100U (USB) perfectly. No problems whatsoever. I am not sure why I can't get these on the web site, but hunt around the FTP site. You might just get lucky...like me. Grant :}

ok, it fixed itself. nothing was updated on his system. nothing was changed. I asked him to check it and it worked today. so, wha' happun? Windows 2000 does regularly attempt to restart/modify services that aren't working optimally, but I don't think any service here had failed or is even involved in Windows Update. It is also possible that we stumbled on a problem with the Windows Update updater that has since been updated at MS HQ. (say that three times fast). So, if it nows works for some of you, this may have been a bug "at the factory." Somehow, I doubt it, unless we all hit something *very* infrequent. Another option might be that some portion of the active X code used to run Windows Update on his machine was cached in his browser cache and over the past week or so it expired and then was downloaded/updated anew when he checked. I have a sneaking suspicion this might be it. Regardless, it fixed itself (which is only appropriate since it broke itself). I do love Windows 2000... :}
