For those who have tried it, do you know if it is possible to NOT use it's new "sleek" design (skin) but have it use the old standard Windows GUI? Thanks

IE Favorites: How to prevent hijacking
PinkPanther replied to PinkPanther's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Thanks, I have tried this but it does not work. The problem with permissions is that in order to install some software, you must do so with administrative rights, which immediately circumvents any restriction placed on the folder -
IE Install On Demand - Preventing
PinkPanther replied to PinkPanther's topic in Customization & Tweaking
As luck would have it, installing SP2 for WindowsXP addresses this issue. Under SP2, the pop-up has an "Options" dropdown, where you can now select "never install content from COMPANY NAME." No more constant bugging for the flash player -
Hi all, Does anyone know of a teak (or utility) that will prevent outside applications from adding links to my favorites? As an example, Netscape (which I unfortunately have to install for testing) adds useless AOL links into the favorites folder. ICQ is notorious for doing the same thing, etc. I have tried making the folder read-only; it has zero effect, since it does not prevent anything from being added. Thanks

Hi all, We'll use Macromedia flash as an example ... When a page first encounter flash content and you browser does not have the flash plugin installed, or you have an older version than required, you get a popup dialog asking if you want to install the latest flash plugin. This popup allows you to say yes or no, and it allows you to tell the Browser to always trust content from Macromedia and auto-install it in the future without prompting. Now, what I am looking for is a way to do the exact opposite. Some way to tell the browser to NEVER trust Macromedia, and thus never prompt me again, but also NOT install anything by them. I know I can disable install on demand as a whole, but that kills the stuff I actually do want; I would like to do a blaket absolute deny on a per company basis. Thanks for ay ideas.

Mapped Drives: Failed to Reconnect at Boot-up
PinkPanther replied to PinkPanther's topic in Networking
Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, the problem persists. It certainly seems like this should have solved it, but alas, no such luck. -
NOt sure what causes this problem, but over time I have seen it happen at some time or another on every machine I have and run. Basically, mapped drives fail to reconnect when the machine boots up, BUT they reconnect fine the minute you open explorer and open the drive; thus, it is not a password issue or a permissions issue. The machine CAN access the mapped drives without problem, but it fails to reconnect them during the boot process. My only guess is that the order of things as they load is causing a problem; i.e. if the drivers for the NIC load after the attempt to reconnect the drives, obviously this would cause a failure. However, I do not know how to control the boot order of such things, so I have not been able to test my theory. The systems are all Windows XP Professional. Thanks for any advice or hints

Classic IE Bug: "Save picture as ..." defaults to untitled.bmp
PinkPanther posted a topic in Software
Hi all, This is an old bug, where trying to save an image from the IE window defaults to saving that image as a .bmp file with the name "untitled" even when the image has a name and is of some other format. Now, here is the kicker; I am aware of the multiple solutions that are on the web, most of them come from Microsoft Knowledge Base articles, such as clearing the internet cache (temporary internet files) and/or increasing it's size, deleting "damaged" and "unknown" objects from the installed programs folder, and even deleting all of the entries in this folder. None of these has worked on my system; Thay have all been tried already; please keep that in mind. Other testing I have done: The files are not to blame, loading the exact same URLs and images in a different browser (Mozilla and Opera) saves the image in it's correct format and using the given name of the image. In IE itself: let's say that you are viewing an image gallery that uses thumbnails, which when clicked load the larger image all by itself into the window. Loading the image (meaning clicking on the thumbnail) creates the problem at hand; the image will only save as an untitled.bmp. However, if I instead right-click on the thumbnail and choose "Save targer as .." then the image saves properly - I find that incredible odd. This does not happen with every image; in the example above, some of the images in a gallery will load and save perfectly fine, but most will generate the bug. I have not been able to pick up a pattern as to which images cause the problem and which do not, but I have noticed that once the bug happens to an image, there is no going back, whereas an image that was fine CAN suddenly exhibit the bug after repeated testing. Anyway, I hope this is enough information ... thanks in advance for any ideas. -
Hi all, on my Windows XP Pro machine, I am having the issue of Windows Messenger always auto-login in when the machines boots up. I have already set the options in Messenger to not run at astartup and not be allowed to run in background, but still it always logs me in when the machine boots up. The weird thing is that it just logs in, and people can message me, but the little application icon in the tray does not even load at startup unless I manually start Windows Messenger, but I am still getting logged in. Any ideas how to prevent this? Thanks

Hi all, I am no llonger able to save any new themes I make in Windows XP. In the display properties, the Themes tab has a "save as" button; if i click it and navigate to anyplace on my computer (I have tested a ton of locations, all with the same result) and enter a name for the new theme, it does not get saved at all. What is even more strange is that if instead of a new name for the theme I choose an older theme, meaning to replace it, Windows just plains deletes the old theme but never saves the new one. Has anyone else encountered this and know of a fix? Thanks.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I will contact my host and suggest the mail spool idea to them.

Hello all, I really hope someone here has a theory on what could possibly be causing this issue … First, this the software involved in the scenario: Outlook 2003 – Final release version Norton Anti-Virus 2003 – fully updated with latest patches and virus definitions Windows XP Pro – Also fully updated with latest patches Ok, now for the really weird problem: Outlook completely out of the blue started having problems retrieving email from one very specific pop account. The error is that it times-out on the very last message it tries to download from this pop account. Some very obvious ideas came to mind at first, so here is a list of everything that has been tried already and the details of things, which pretty much covers all the usual suspects on the cause of the problem … 1. ALL messages have been deleted from the mail server using the web interface supplied. As soon as more messages arrive, Outlook has the same problem. 2. No one message is to blame. Sometimes there is spam on the server, sometimes not. It does not matter what the messages are, Outlook times out on the last message only. 3. Because outlook is timing out on the last message, it is also failing to properly delete downloaded messages from the server (I guess it only does this after a fully successful operation) so it keeps creating duplicates of all the messages it does download. 4. Outlook 2002 (with all other aspects of the scenario being equal) does not have this problem. 5. The settings and outlook data file can not be the cause. This problem can be duplicated on several machines using completely clean installs of all the software, meaning it is also a new outlook data file and settings. 6. The problem only happens on this one pop account. All other pop accounts on the same server and on other servers do not have this problem at all. 7. The host of the pop account has been contacted, Discountasp.net, and they are also at a loss. From their end, nothing obvious is different on this one pop account. 8. The “solution” is to turn off virus scanning of incoming emails. This allows Outlook to download all the messages. No other settings in Norton change the situation, not even the setting that specifically deals with time-outs. 9. The key things to keep in mind is the weird combination of this happening only with Outlook 2003, Norton incoming scanning ON, and ONLY this pop account. All 3 of these things have to be true for the problem to happen. Change just one of them, and no problem at all. I will supply any additional info as people needed. Thanks for any theories on what on earth could be going on here.
