People: What's on your "Computer Upgrades Parts Wish-Li
Four and Twenty replied to Admiral LSD's topic in Slack Space
well alec I really don't think the NV30 is in my price range. I am running my own small biz so essentials are what I need. I don't really game that much at all so this is what i had in mind http://www.msicomputer.com/product/vga/vga_detail.asp?model=G4MX460-VTP I know it is an MX and it is crippled (no pixel shaders and whatnot) but like I said I don't really have a chance to play that much anymore. Besides that is more than enough card for my aging p3s. -

you can boot off a firewire card and usb sucks anyway -
svchost.exe runs dlls so like if there are dlls that microsoft uses to spy on you they wouldn't work or something. That is just a guess. I am not as paraniod as Curley and i also don't use win2k.

don't upgrade. Install clean and install all your programs again. With regaurds to your games working I don't know you should list them or check them against the compatability list on the front page of this site.

I like nVidia cause they have something for everyone. None of their cards are bad and you get the same drivers for all. I don't buy nVidias latest shit cause I am not some crazy gammer. I will soon be buying a gf4mx to get some mad cheap dual head and decent ogl performance.
-
yea I would overclock if i could and i allways experiment when I can my current graphics card (gf2mx) is not very overclockable and doesn't really benifit if you do the little you can. That is what i find with most overclocking of anything. Some things overclock very well but most don't and I just like to keep it all in spec when it comes down to it. Overclocking is fun but the only things that I really overclocked for long periods of time was my 440bx and my tnt2 and those days are now long gone.

i like vmware it works great and it is very up to date
-
yea AMD is real hot right out of the box. I love my nice COOL p3's they are not overclocked but they aren't ment to be on this board.

i had that one time also that type of crap realy pisses me off it is not usually directly my fault when my computer gets crap like this i guess i shouldn't let my friends and family use my comp.

Deploying ServicePack3 on a fresh install wont install sound
Four and Twenty replied to Minotaur's topic in Software
yA know i just got my first live series card (ripped it out of a junk system) and i am not dissapionted works well on my dually and never gave me a single issue installing. Only thing is i can't get the damn digital output working. So far it is much better than my onboard sound. -
I definatly still see a place for NT4 out there but 95 is crap. I am probably more than a little bias due to haveing fast hardware and all the latest betas/RCs from MS so pay no attention to my ramlblings.

What's the verdict on SP3, then?

Quote: How much you wanna bet that XP SP1 goes smooth? ;( I just heard that they are gonna repackage XP with slipstreamed SP1 and replace the previous ver of XP....Way to go MS! Wipe the memories of your beta OS from the public eye! XP allways worked great for me even since the alpha days one of my fav builds was 2252 alpha when they had just introduced the watercolor theme. -
Intel just kicks ass! Best quality processors and chipsets on the market. (um serverworks makes good chipsets also but they are pretty specific.)

WTF is mozilla?

Quote: My suggestion: Buy it but see if you can return it. Then do a compare between the latest that Nvidia/Matrox/ATI has to offer. Pick which one you like the most but be fair towards's each. Word the only problem with that is you will get the best prices online and not in the shop. But you could buy from the shop return it and buy the same thing online. also if you are going the return route make sure you ask if it is for store credit or cash and if there is a restocking fee.

i like to work on photo shop a lot while running premire and about 15-20 separate iexplore processes with outlook xp and doing lots of ftp downloads and whatnot plus music and a bunch of other crap. It adds up quick. One process of ie alone will grab 18-60 megs

What's the verdict on SP3, then?
Four and Twenty replied to packman's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have been hearing lots of weird shit about sp3. Too bad I don't use win2k anymore cause I could have lots of fun with bugs and stop errors and NTLDR is missing and the like. -
well i was not thinking of the L2 thing i know that that is old news. But i do remeber a post that listed the most common tweaks that people used and why they didn't do jack shit. I only have 512 megs of ram which is not nearly enought for what I do so i keep my pagefile static at 2gigs. I don't think that any tweak is going to make me use the pagefile less since my load is usualy about 800 to 1200 meg.

Quote: I am trying to setup a workgroup to alllow shared access to a wireless broadband internet connection. The ISP does provide for multiple mailboxes. I have an evaluation version of Linkbyte(Comtun) to use for this purpose. My questions are as follows: 1. Is it better(easier) to use static addresses for the workgroup as opposed to DHCP? doesn't mater DHCP is easier Quote: 2. Can you use DHCP on a workgroup with 2 Win2k machines and a Win98 machine as the proxy server? that should work but win98 is not the most stable or best serving platform. Quote: The only thing that will be on the win98se machine is the operating system and the proxy server software, Linkbyte. According to the manual for the Linkbyte software it is a lot easier to configure with DHCP. yea DHCP is easier Quote: I have a peer to peer workgroup running between the 2 win2k machines now using a 4 port hub. Ideally I will have an 8 port switch running that will allow me to plug in my laptop in other rooms in the house for internet access and printer sharing. The laptop is on win98se also and I have two other rooms wired for access. Thanks in advance. What i would recomend here is a win2k machine with 2 nics and ICS installed. This will do DHCP for your network and it will be a much more stable reliable fast solution compared to a 3rd party proxy on 98.
