I would say dual p3 on an Intel chipset or Dual p4 xeon on an i860 my opinion is totaly biased due to my repeated bad luck with amd in the past.
-
so you are saying via is cool with you cause it is cheap and you are not using it proffessionaly and you have the patience to work through the problems. I need my system to be exactly as is and not give me any problems.

i don't know if i have posted back to this thread since i got my dually so here goes

Quote: says 4and20, well glad to know that u swimm in money, why dont u throw me, "poor entusiast" some. Dude don't make any assumptions here I bought my motherboard and processors used so that I could save money. I am not saying that you are poor dumb ***, I am probably ten times more poor than you. I haven't had a real job in almost a year. My typical day consists of waking up around 3 pm getting stoned and eating whatever canned food I can find at my grandparent’s summerhouse. Anyway all that is beside the point, I am a penny pinchin' mofo myself. However I will not sacrifice stability and compatibility in anyway. All I was saying is it is not worth buyin that amd/via stuff cause it is trash cheap dirty trash. I used to have a small biz selling custom built pcs to people around where I live. It was just me and my boy running it. well we started using via chipsets and amd sh1t right around the time when they hit 1Ghz and we built tons of them they were flying out the door cause people liked the price. Then the **** hit the fan. Every single one of those computers had one if not many support issues to deal with. I spent 2 months just sorting all that **** out. We used all the best sh1t also abit, asus and msi mobos, nvidia and matrox graphics. Intel and 3com nics (3com was the worst with via) People had all sorts of troubles with the usb printers/scanners/cameras. bsod's with agp 3d stuff, pci cards not being recognized by the system, modems that would need the computer to be rebooted to reconnect to the net, etc. etc. etc. and now that I have lost my once successful biz due to the advice of a friend of mine who was telling me "amd is great, outperforms Intel and costs less" that may be true but that is not the whole picture. U see I was always pro Intel except for that hellish 5 month period of my life. And now that I am broke and in debt for my mistakes I think I am intel for life. There is one and only one promising thing in amd's future that i can see and that is nvidia. cause via/ali/sis are all trash and fuking amd can't even make a good chipset for thier processors (i.e. no usb support on mpx mobos, etc. WTF) If nvidia can make the nforce fly and make it stable then amd might finally have a good platform. The problem that i see with the nforce is that nvidia is aiming at low budget which is ok but i think they should make some high end nforce chipsets as well. O well that is enough babbling but that is what happens when you type a post watching the sun rise cause you can't sleep cause you don't know what you are going to eat tomorrow cause your once flourishing biz crumbled due to the trash that amd and via are unleashing on us.

A)Microsoft needs some competition B)More is better (haven't done a dual boot in a while) C)who knows it could run some appz better than windows D)it is probably going to be more customizable than windows E)its just a kinda cool idea

Back to Win2k from XP, felt like coming home..
Four and Twenty replied to Toby's topic in Slack Space
damn you guys must really like win2k alot i have been using win xp since the 2252 alpha version and i have had nearly every leaked build since. I can't imagine going back to win2k. In fact i have been using Whistler/XP longer than win2k since july 2000. I don't think i could ever go back. -

cool man that did the trick what is weird to me is that it worked with gimme dll in some of the betas and only worked without them in some of the betas and the multiplayer games worked fine the whole time. but the app workaround thing worked perfectly. perhaps this thread should be added to the compatibility list for NFS5 under XP.

yep intel/intel for me i love my dually and i have only seen one bsod on it and that was due to crappy win2k drivers for my friends crappy dlink mp3 player before i was on the i840 dually setup i ran a 440bx which never gave me one bsod (um except in win98 but that doesn't count really) when setting up via/athlons for my friends i got nothing but problems with agp and pci compatibilty and especially bad problems with usb. what is speed without stability and compatibility and why the hell is everyone so down on rambus? I costs more cause it is faster. you pay for what you get. Rambus mem bandwidth = 3.2 gb per sec the fastest ddr is 2.7 gb per sec pc100 is 800 meg per sec and pc133 is like 1.2 gb per sec (not exactly sure about the pc133 but it is close to that) i personally can't wait to have a dual p4 xeon/ rambus system and like the other dude said the p4 has not been around long enough to show its true power. I can garantee you that any software package in the next few years that is worth a sh1t will have code optimizations for the p4.

hey big b how come the athlon sys isn't in your sig anymore. did you get rid of it or sumpthing

um run win3.1 virtually with one'a dem proggies and the run it. LOL!!! dude you are kinda saying the same thing as "i wanna play my nes games in my game cube" you should send me some email dude i could "sugest some software" that you might like! fukin LOL

yea xp has dat sh1t

Quote: I It single handedly paved the way for the ATHLON (which is the CPU of choice for most manufacturers) um where do you get ur facts buddy. Intel owns the oem market. AMD's strongest market is the penny pinching enthusiast market. AMD makes chips for less money than intel and mhz for mhz they are faster, but that doesn't neccisarily make them better. I for instance need a stable reliable dual processor workstation to suit my needs. Intel/Intel is the only solution for me at this time. If you are a gamer then it makes sense to go with AMD as they are cheeper and mhz for mhz they are faster. but so what i am getting really sick of this intel amd debate. You can't just say that amd is better all around cause they are cheaper and faster. You need to find the processor and chipset that will suit your needs. I rarely play games but i do alot of photoshop work and multitasking. for me dual p3 on the i840 is the cheapest most stable best solution for me.

the multiplayergames crash in need for speed 5 for me other than that everything runs great. o except southpark that doesn't run on xp so i deleted it.(game sucked anyway) I have not run win2k on my i840 dually, only xp but i can tell you that xp was faster than 2k with my single pIII 500 on a 440bx. all the parts are the same since then excep motherboard cpu's and ram.

remeber that tread about the boot up delays while nav starts (alec i know you remember what i am talking about) NAV 7.6 corp is the superior virus scan program. It has no system pauses on startup and it doesn't have that childish interface that the consumer version of NAV has. Still has the live update but it will work for more than just a year. It can be managed from a single distribution location on the network so that updates need only be downloaded once. I have noticed no performance hit using this software vs using the 2002 version which would pause my system just after logon (very annoying, I know i am not the only one with this problem.)
