get the abit board and setup raid. Even if u can't clock your processor up as high the raid will make up for the speed difference.

yo hit I have the natural Pro Key board as well and I don't plug in the ps2 only the usb. The ps2 is there for backward compatibility but you do not have to use it if your sys supports usb keyboards [This message has been edited by Four and Twenty (edited 26 February 2001).] -

I prefer win me over win 98 but they both suck and i have to keep one around to extract all those war3z games that are zipped using wierd dos programs that will not run on nt dos. Winme runs much better on my computer than win98 did and i don't have to use it very often because XP runs all my programs and games perfectly -
Well you can still acess share permissions through computer management but it seems kinda strange that you would not be able to set i right in the folder properties like before. I hope that they add this function back as it just makes things easier and that is what XP is supposed to be all about.

Curious if windows XP will be worth to upgrade to

You want to know details about the speed of it? XP 2428 takes 40 seconds to get to the login screen and another 8 to get to the desktop. Results may very but i think that that is very fast considering the load that i put on it. And what is really quite amazing is its multitasking ability you can easily start running many apps before the os has finished all your startup apps. You can get a whole mess of programs open and it still runs smooth as hell even with all of the nice graphics and alpha blending enabled. It run Graphics and audio like it was beos. They have improved the thumbnail viewing speed dramatically. Just speed in general browsing your computer is faster programs load faster. Network browsing is faster. XP is well worth the upgrade because it is the best OS ever created. ------------------ My System Dell Demension XPS T500 Triple Boot Windows 2000 Pro 2195 Windows Whistler Pro 2428 Windows Millennium Final Retail PIII @ 500 Mhz (with after market heatsink and dual fan) 512 Megs Ram Guillemot Maxi Gammer Cougar (TNT2 M64 w/ 32 Megs of RAM) Matrox Millennium PCI (w/ 4 Megs of RAM for second monitor) 3Com Etherlink XL 10/100 Ethernet Card 2 x Abit Hot Rod Pro ATA-100 RAID Controlers 2 x 12.6 Gig Maxtor Hard Disks RAID 0 (for system) 1 76.3 Gig Maxtor Hard Disk (for storage) 40X LG CD Rom Drive 100 Mb Iomega Internal Zip Drive MS Explorer Mouse MS Natural Keyboard Pro And not a single piece of software that I actually own -
why use software raid when ata100 raid controllers are dirt cheap. I have two in my sys.

I don't know if it will resolve your game problems or not but according to what I have heard it should. Also it will use a little more ram than win2k but it runs much faster already and it is only supposed to get faster still. I noticed the javascript at litestep.com does not work in ie6

Mine is not there either and i am damn sure that my drives are ntfs. MS must have removed this feature or something

what patches? I don't need any patches for 2428.

Has anyone tried Mcaffe 4.03 in 2428 that is what i have. That and AVG. I tried AVG and it ****ed my sys up and the uninstaller did not work so i had to go and delete all the keys out out of the reg by hand which was a pain in the arse so if you are thinking about installing avg don't do it.

do I have too many applications on my computer ??
Four and Twenty replied to Mushy Peas's topic in Software
If there is more in the startup it will take longer to load simple as that. I load my system as much as possible and yeah it slows it down a little but phuck it that is why is use NT cause it can handle multitasking correctly. You should do a web search for the startup control panel and check out what is running as you sys loads and cut out the crap u don't need. Good job getting nt4 and 2k on the same sys by the way, that can be tricky. I once had nt4 server 2k and 98 on the same sys but it did not last very long and I just had to leave NT4 behind for good. There is no such thing as too many programs that is like saying I have too much money or I get too much pussy or I have too much pot. ------------------ My System Dell Demension XPS T500 Triple Boot Windows 2000 Pro 2195 Windows Whistler Pro 2428 Windows Millennium Final Retail PIII @ 500 Mhz (with after market heatsink and dual fan) 512 Megs Ram Guillemot Maxi Gammer Cougar (TNT2 M64 w/ 32 Megs of RAM) Matrox Millennium PCI (w/ 4 Megs of RAM for second monitor) 3Com Etherlink XL 10/100 Ethernet Card 2 x Abit Hot Rod Pro ATA-100 RAID Controlers 2 x 12.6 Gig Maxtor Hard Disks RAID 0 (for system) 1 76.3 Gig Maxtor Hard Disk (for storage) 40X LG CD Rom Drive 100 Mb Iomega Internal Zip Drive MS Explorer Mouse MS Natural Keyboard Pro And not a single piece of software that I actually own -

Quote: <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by gq2: for win2k all any one really needs is no more than 128 sdram nothing more</font> What are u smoking? I need to get me some of that sh1t promptly! Or wait no you are probably smoking crack. In my opinion Win 2k requires at least 256 megs of ram for acceptable performance. (note this is my opinion so I can't be wrong about this) Also the more ram the better. I've got 512 megs and I will buy another 256 very soon. -
Alec I know that you know your sh1t and all but I really have to disagree with you on this one. I never use up all my ram, never! So I don't need the paging file. I run plenty of appz and do alot of multitasking and I never have any problems with running out of memory. It really comes down to configuring your system for what you need it to do. I have 512 megs I don't use it all I don't need a paging file simple as that.

i can't tell whether this kid is joking or serious. also david why have your boot partition be fat why not fat 32 what advantage does this give you. personally i use 3 partitions c: 15 gb fat32 win me, d: 5gb ntfs 2k, e: 5gb ntfs Xp and my other hard drive is one big 76.3 gb ntfs partition for storage. This setup is working great and i have been using the 3 partition setup for a while for various versions of 2k 98 me and xp and it works fine. If you like to chop up you hard drive into 5 partitions go ahead but u are making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Ghosting Partitions from a RAID Array

ok now i have the server magic program and it tells me that it will only run on windows nt/2000 server. I tried the application compatibility mode but that only works to make it think that it is nt/2k not server. Is there anyway to force this program to install on win2k or xp (preferably xp) I have a copy of win2k advanced server kicking around but I would rather not have to install and configure it just for this. -
