What does W2K SP1 break? (Problem w/ watching DVDs)

Already tried that, Aragorn. Any kind of obvious possible solutions, I have already tried. The registry setting did nothing to help with normal playback because this isn't related to the MM275 error that Sigma Designs' drivers and applications are notorious for. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

What does W2K SP1 break? (Problem w/ watching DVDs)

Blah. No go. I did just that and no change in the situation. I am still getting unexpected "freeze" in DVD playback. I also did a reboot just in case and still nothing. I'm really starting to wonder what's going on. I did a very quick check with SigmaDesigns's news server and checked with their newsgroups. It would appear that there are other people who are experiencing the same problem. However, I did not see any possible solutions to the problem. I am going to attempt to fire off a note over to their tech support department to see if they have any theories behind this. It's really a mystery to me and I don't know if it is a software I installed or just something screwy with Win2000. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

What does W2K SP1 break? (Problem w/ watching DVDs)

Well the odd part is that initially everything works. Watched Matrix and my Dragon Ball Z DVDs with it. I'm using the Hollywood Plus in case you wonder. Playback was not a problem until somewhere along the way it got broken, which I have no clue as to what exactly did break the DVD playback. The problem lies in trying to forward to a specific point of the movie or playing up to a certain point of a DVD movie. For both of these situations, the DVD would not continue playback. Eventually it'll restart back, or begin playback at the start of the disc. It didn't seem to be the DVD software's problem. But I find it strange to see that I can't play DVD movies normally now. My assumption is that it is SP1. But I wanted to make sure if it is that or not. But a side note to mention is that upon a reboot, leaving a DVD movie/disc in the DVD drive during the boot process would result in a STOP error, causing me to hit the reset button and reboot the computer _again_. A bootlog indicates that it gave me a STOP error just after loading the udfs.sys driver. Leaving the DVD drive empty solves that little problem. However, I am still concerned as to the main problem of normal playback of DVDs. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

What does W2K SP1 break? (Problem w/ watching DVDs)

JediBaron, Well I've read all about that part being one of the problems. However, I don't have a IDE setup for optical drives. My DVD, CD-ROM, and CD-R drives are all SCSI-based. The only thing IDE that's on my system is the HD itself. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

  6. Okay, something is fishy and I am wondering if it's the SP that I installed. I'm not too sure but I've been having some trouble trying to get DVD movies to work w/o a problem. Is anyone else experiencing problems with viewing DVD movies with SP1 installed (an added factor of a Hollywood Plus is also a possibility)? Or maybe it's just me? I didn't view the entire list of changes SP1 makes to Win2000. But what I'd like to know, if it has any relations to the problem I might be having, is if SP1 breaks any functionality or softwares? From my past experience, I've used PowerDVD and my Hollywood Plus to watch DVD movies. But that was all prior to installing SP1. Is it my imagination or am I getting the same problem some other people may be facing? ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

    Dumb Logitech

I guess y'all can add Logitech to the amount of support that one can receive regarding support under Win2000. I submitted two questions regarding the support of the QuickCam Pro USB which I had bought quite a while ago. However, even with a new software release of QuickCam softwares, the drivers included does not match the version that I have. On Logitech's site, there are two QuickCam Pro's. One has the original focus ring and the other has dark focus ring. I own the original version. Asking them about whether or not that the device will be supported doesn't seem to give me any confidence that this USB device will be supported. Well that's just great. Maybe I should just go over to Logitech and hit them on the head with my now-useless QuickCam. Ugh... I don't know why their support system is like this. I was hoping for a more human response. And the response I got did not seem one bit anything like human. Instead, it seems like the idiots there just look at the question, look for the closest automated answer they can find, and send it. I sometimes wonder why these companies ever bother having a tech support area if they can't even PROVIDE actual tech support online. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

    LiveWare! Driver update for win2k.

Damn. A lot of stuff happened in the course of time when the drivers are out. Well, like they say, it works with some set of hardwares, it doesn't with others. Me, not a single problem... well, I never notice it much anyways if there is any. System configuration: P3 750MHz (FC-PGA w/ Sloket) ASUS P3B-F, HW REV 1.04, BIOS 1005 256MB PC100 Herc/Guill 3D Proph II GTS 64MB (std clock) Live! Platinum Voodoo2 AHA-2940UW REALMagic Hollywood Plus Intel EtherExpress Pro/100B NIC Maxtor 27.3GB 7200RPM U/66 Maxtor 8.4GB 5400RPM U/33 --------------------------------------------- System is configured with ACPI mode. IRQ sharing is on 9. No problems that occur frequently or often (and even if there is a problem; nothing relating to hardware). I've tried the stock W2000 Live! drivers and they were fine. A few problems here and there I've encountered but nothing that is serious to me, in my opinion that is. The previous Live! drivers works fine and were rock solid and stable on my end. IRQ sharing with ACPI is working flawlessly on my system. So I'm probably one of the lucky ones out there. Lastly, in response to a post regarding a certain NeoGeo emulator, try disabling sound interpolation as I've had that problem which by disabling that went away. Any other questions or theories you want to add? Post them here! ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

I only know of 3 companies that make TV tuner cards. And if it's second hand, it could be one of those three. The first is AverMedia (http://www.avermedia.com/). Second is Hauppage (http://www.hauppage.com/). And lastly is ATI (http://www.ati.com/). Aver and Hauppage both have Windows NT/2000 and 9x drivers available. ATI, though, could be a different story. But do check their web site to see if the card matches to any of those three manufacturers I've mentioned. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

    Liveware 3.0 revisited...

Sponge: I'll have to disagree with that. True that they'll want to take the 4 day weekend off but being a network admin on an Internet server don't get much time off. True they'll be at home. But they're more than likely to be called in when there's a server problem. And someone may be in there making sure everything works and calls in if something goes wrong. I may be wrong on it but that's my take on the matter. I just don't quite believe that the senior administrators would be far off on vacation. Then again, maybe they would... but who knows? As for leaked drivers... it isn't that big of a deal for me. But for others, it is a big deal. On the other hand, it's the holidays. Why are we even posting on this damn board anyways? ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu
  12. And the people has spoken... I've ran Windows 95 for the longest time, even during the time when Win98SE was out. However, it's probably just me or perhaps some configuration error but I seem to crash out more on 98 than 95. I've always hated the tradeoff I got when needing USB and proper DVD support. But that's then. I've ran Win2000 for quite a while an am liking it thus far. It's much better than 98 in every way. It has many similar asthetic features of 98 and more. They say that gamers should stick to Win9x. That's half true in some cases. What everyone should do is assess the games you have and the type of hardware you have. Some hardware don't interact well in Win2000 and some do. Some softwares don't interact well in Win2000 also, but at the same time some perform great on it. You may want to take a look at the type of video card you have. I've ran a G400 on Win2000 before. Q3A and Unreal Tournament ran quite well in 1024x768@32bit but with a bit of slow-down here and there. Now, with a GeForce2 GTS 64MB handy, those games and Tribes ran fantastically well. Since Win2000 is still fairly new, it's still recommended to at least take a look at the entire hardware spec of your machine before you consider Win2000. And with Windows Mill. Ed. around the corner, I'm skeptical if this'll crash even more or be actually stable for once. But that's what my spare partition is for anyways. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

    Liveware 3.0 revisited...

As usual the milage of these drivers will vary from system to system. What I'd like to know is what kind of improvements they've made since the previous driver release. If they can give some sort of outline or detail as to what's changed, it would give us a better idea if we should download them. I personally haven't had any problems with the drivers myself. Maybe I'm just lucky? ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu

New 3D Prophet II GTS 64MB BIOS

As the subject says. Go get it at www.hercules.com. The new one clocks the core and RAM down to the reference 200MHz/333MHz speeds. Come to think of it, maybe the lower core speed may help me in my video lockups? Let's see if that's true for me. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu
  15. First, the specs: P3 750 CuMine ASUS P3B-F 3D Prophet II GTS 64MB SB Live! Platinum AHA-2940UW Hollywood Plus Second, the problem: Maybe it's me but I am not sure. I've been trying to get this card to run smoothly for me for the past few days. So far I've noticed a few things. Some of my small utilities that I use seem to be causing lock-ups when I tried to fire up Q3A or UT. I've done a bit of testing to see which one caused it and found the culprit. That's the good part. The bad part is that I cannot seem to get the system stable enough to have repeated 3D initialization. In other words, if I tried to fire up UT or Q3A again after quitting, I get a lock-up. I've also gotten some lock-ups when using the drivers from the CD when I purchased this card. Both this and the reference drivers seems to be giving me a bit more headache than I bargain for. If this is definitely a software issue, I'd like some pointers to that. Ask any questions. Ask about anything. And if you got any pointers, tips, or whatnot, post it up and I'll try them out and let ya know how it turns out. On a different side of note... this card kicks major ass... when the system isn't freezing that is. ------------------ -- Strider Hiryu
