Major Win2k problems! !!EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!
BladeRunner replied to Silent-IQ's topic in Hardware
Well although Intel have issued a full recall on the 820/DIMM combo, many MB manufacturers say it isn't a serious issue. Asus & Gigabyte for example say that after many tests the problem appeared in very few of their MB's. Although the boards are no longer 'officially' available the issue of course has been blown out of all proportion. And anyway, all 820/DIMM owners are getting a free upgrade to 820/RamBus. Then we have the 815 on the horizon, it might be a small set-back, but not a major one. The Intel based MB's are still going to be the more stable/easy to set-up. I've only ever owned one non-Intel chipset (An old ALI I believe) and never again. -
Hi people, I have a SCSI Pioneer 32x/5x DVD-ROM drive on my PC. Just got around to installing Quake II onto my beast. Anyway, during the installation setup a message appeared: The following components were found not to meet the minimum recommended specification - 4x CD-ROM drive The installation program allows you to install regardless. Anybody else seen this error at all? Got myself kinda worried now that my DVD Rom drive is on it's way out.

I just popped into my local EB store here in the UK to pre-order a couple of things. The release date they have for Diablo II is July 14th. Fingers crossed for all drivers for my system being top-notch before this date
-
Well the sooner the better I say. But Blizzard still haven't released a date, so any date is still speculation

I can highly recommend the ABit BE6-II. Very stable MB, and the ability to up the FSB settings 1hz at a time is excellent if you decide you wanna give O/C'ing a go.

Hi, You may or may not already know this. You may or may not care, but I'm going to tell you all anyway I e-mailed SCI about their forthcoming Carmageddon TDR2000 game and support under Win2000. Their reply was..................positive! The technical support person who e-mailed me back told me that they have tested the beta and near-gold versions of the game under Win2000 and all is working well. Although there is no guarantee the game will say Win2000 compatible on the box, it will be supported and will run fine. Just some info for those like me who like mowing down the odd pedestrian now and again

Hiya, It's been there since the 28th of April. It's the beta driver got the Marvel G400 and is available from the web site under this card ALl the G400 range use the same driver, but because each card has to be individually certified by Microsoft the drivers for G400, G400MAX & Marvel G400 have got split up. The 5.06 drivers do work however for all cards based on the G400 chipset.

Yup, I'm up for that one. Some kind of on-line partition. Someobody sets out the wording of a latter of partition, everybody can electronically sign it, with e-mail address etc. Then it could be sent to the company in question.

Oh yer! That's the reason I e-mailed SCI about Carmageddon 3. The screen shots for this look amazing, and Carmageddon 2 on a LAN (Despite all the bugs) is amazing. They still say June for a release, it's gonna beat Diablo II out by the looks, so a few weeks of pedestrian/zombie smashing before I can go into hiding with Diablo II.

Hi, I posted a message about this earlier in the week. Don't touch McAfee 4.5 yet. There is a major bug in it, you will experience a massive performance hit under WIn2k. I have spoken to Network Associates about this, they tell me the developers are working on a fix. When I say performance hit, I mean things like, right-click desktop, wait 30-45 seconds for display properties to appear that kind of thing.

I sit here day after day trying my best to defend Microsoft as a company. When this whole lawsuit first came out I defended MS, I felt that the whole thing was pointless and stupid. I have lived through the Win9x line of products crashing on me at every turn. I have lived through 'WinNT' and it's quirks, but MS have done it this time. Oooooo I'm so close to leaving them forever and looking elsewhere for an OS. How dare they release an incomplete OS in the guise of Win2000!! I talk about of course........Hearts OK guys, on a serious note, why no Hearts under Win2000, and is there any way of getting my beloved Hearts back with full network support? Cheers.

Hi, Some are but most aren't. Non of the Diamond Monster Soundcards appear on the Win2k HCL. If you pop along to: http://www.diamondmm.com/customer_caretechnical_supportwin2k_audio.htm You will see a list of those that are and those that aren't. Monster Sound MX400 is supported, also Diamond have their own drivers. Monster Sound MX300, use built-in Vortx2 drivers, no updated driver available from Diamond. Monster Sound original, M80 & MX200 not supported, no support planned. Paul

Hi. CL were very good last time. They said mid-march for LiveWare and they delivered on about the 20th of March if I remember correctly. I just have this feeling it will be end of May at the earliest before we see them. Doesn't stop me checking sblive.com every day I arrive at work though

Hi, That would be Norton Antivirus 2000. Shows as version 6.10.20 on my system with dats dated from 11-5-2000 Paul
-
This is so true, but how long have we been waiting for the 1.7 patch now? I'm thinking they are too busy working on DK3. The 1.7 patch looks like yet another promised yet never appears patch.

Hi, Steer clear of McAfee 4.5 for Win2000, at least for the time being. We have a site license for this product, so we installed it straight onto the Win2000 machine we integrated onto our network. To say there was a performance hit is an under-statement. Doing a right-click on the desktop to get display properties results in a 30 second wait. Items on the start menu take an age to appear. We un-installed McAfee and installed Norton Anti-virus, all these problems went away and the PC's are performing how they should be. I have spoken to McAfee tech support and I'm still awaiting a call back. Paul

MS have done really bad things in past...this is the worst!

Only one thing for it. Gonna post a 'bug report' to Microsoft telling them that my Win2000 version of Hearts doesn't seem to work and my icon appears to be missing from the Start bar. -

Hi, OK I've copied both mshearts.exe & cards.dll into my c:\winnt directory. Mshearts runs!!! woohoooo But no network support, the 'host game' & 'connect to game' options are greyed out. Yes this machine has got NetBEUI installed. SO I got the game back, but no beating the rest of the IT team Paul -
Hi, Right-click on your 'Start' bar. Choose properties from the drop down menu. Uncheck the 'Use Personalized Menus' box. Paul

Hi, Just an addition on the G400 card. I have a G400MAX with Win2000 and it runs excellent. Make sure you download the Microsoft Certified drivers and it will work like a dream. (Getting my bloody G400MAX to run in AGP 2x is a whole different matter, but not Win2k related) -
Hi, Something you could try. Remove the following registry key from your Win2000 setup: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\GroupWise\Address Book - User Interface Then re-install the Groupwise client. Paul
-
Hi, Using Adaptec Easy CD 4.02, all running very very well now. Some early probs with Easy CD, but Adaptec seem to have gotten it sorted out now.
-
Hi, Yes it does, but you need to apply a pre-patch. Goto www.novell.com and then goto the technical support pages. Do a search in the knowledge base under GroupWise products and simply type Windows 2000 in the search window. About the 18th artical is the one you are interested in, simply titled 'Error Occurs Installing GroupWise 5.x' It's all to do with Windows messaging not being included with Win2000. If you attempt to install the Windows Messaging components from the GroupWise client package you will hit BIG problems. Paul

Hi, I've only had one problem with UO under Win2000. If failed to get one of the required updates, kept of failing. In the end I just had to delete the uodate folder and all then went fine. Game runs without any glitches or problems at all. It runs better under Win2000 than it ever did under Win98. Win2000 seems to be able to better cope with the terrible Memory Leaks UO has. Even after a mass 5 hour session it's still running fine. ******************************************** ABit BE6-II, PIII 550, 384MB RAM, G400 MAX, SB Live! Hello People, Running a Matrox G400 MAX on a ABit BE6-II Mobo. Both the video card & Mobo are quite capable of running in AGP 2x mode. Ran PowerStrip. It reports that I'm running in 1x mode. Try to make the change here, warns me, I do it, hard lock...reset button time. Back into Windows, re-run PowerStrip, still running in 1x mode. I can't see any option in the BIOS to set 2x. Anybody have any ideas? ******************************************** ABit BE6-II, PIII 550, 384MB RAM, G400 MAX, SB Live!
