Over the past two days I have received the Kles virus no less than six times. On each occasion it has been from an "unknown to me" sender although from the headers I've been able to pin three of them down to the pol.co.uk ISP. One or maybe two I could understand, but six or seven seems a little high and I'm now trying to find out if somebody is purposely sending me these virus's or it is just a little more common out there at the moment. Is anybody else out there received an abnormally high number of virus's at the moment?

Just got an e-mail back from the abuse department over at pol.co.uk They have confirmed that one of their users did indeed send a virus and not just to me. Although they say the person in question probably didn't know he was doing so - good old "mail myself" virus. Anyway, on the back of the e-mails and headers I forwarded to them they have locked two of their accounts, they will be unable to send any e-mail until they have contacted pol.co.uk to confirm they are virus free. I'm personally not 100% convinced the person didn't know about it, but a result never the less.

Yer, they exist. Surprised you didn't manage to find them on HP's site though. I was a little confused to start with, then it suddenly hit me that device is external and so does actually require drivers - Internal ones are fine. Anyway, I went here: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/eng/software_drivers.htm In the search box I entered: cd writer plus 7200e That took me to a page where I could select my OS and then download any drivers I needed. Also note there appears to be a Firmware upgrade available too, WinME, Win2k & WinXP can be very picky about Firmware so it might be worth up[censored] this too.

In the two plus years I've frequented this forum I must admit I've been very surprised at the lack of trouble makers and people who come here to either be abusive or generally a pain in the ass. There have been a few and I find that most just go away on their own. It's like the old saying, don't feed the trolls and they will go find somebody that will. Surely this is the best policy here? Let him post what he wants, abusive messages or trolling will simply be deleted and eventually he'll move on. Anyway, that's just my opinion, it has worked on the few occasions in the past. Bladerunner. No, my first name isn't Blade nor is my second name Runner. Yes Bladerunner is an alias I hide behind as I'm pretty sure the username "Paul" was already taken when I joined. I'm also not really a Bladerunner, they are fictional characters in what I see as the best movie ever made. -
By default I am sure that Norton Corporate just sends back a message telling the sender "The message you sent contained the xxx virus, full instructions for removal can be found here" I'm sure it doesn't send the actual attachment back. ALthough that is when you are using the full corporate software, with a local central server, it may not be the case if you are running the software in unmanaged mode. The address that has been hit is the address listed on the WHOIS information on a couple of domains registered to me, so it would be very easy to get the information from there. The strange thing is that the address doesn't get spammed, well one in the past month isn't bad, yet I've received some seven virus. I am currently in contact with the abuse department over at pol.co.uk so hopefully if it is somebody playing "silly buggers" they will soon be stopped in their tracks. Other than that it is quite a private address, supplied to family & friends and although is the address I use to register with such forums as this I always check the "Hide real e-mail address" option. On well, just have to see how it goes. It isn't a problem, Norton 2002 has stopped every single one without a hitch, just frustating thinking seven people want to talk to me when in fact all they want to do is attempt to make my life a misery

Aren't they all the bloody same? FPS - Run around, kill a few things, use the same weapons but called by a different name. Get bored so take the game online. Get killed by the players who spend all day "mastering their keyboard/mouse or those that are lucky enough to have a great connection speed to the net. Then get "ownzed" by somebody who has downloaded the latest cheat so they can see through walls, kill you from the otherside of the map or set fire to your cat. Sorry, but like fighting games on the consoles, surely once you've seen and played one you've seen and played them all? Attacks and threats to mine or my rabbits life accepted yet ignored

Well on Friday I replaced my GF3 Ti200 with a GF4 Ti4200 (Good old work PC's). Anyway, I uninstalled the drivers before making the swap (they may share the same driver set, but you gotta uninstall and reinstall for hardware changes). It was then I realised the only drivers I had a copy of were some 40.xx from about three weeks ago. Installed these and the problems started. Hardlocks for no reason, in games, browsing the Internet, doing anything and no connection except the drivers. Attempted to download the 30.82's and my machine hardlocked halfway through the download :-/ In the end had to uninstall the drivers and download the 30.82's whilst in VGA mode, only way I could get them. That was Friday and the 30.82's haven't caused a single problem.

Well, two reasons why the SIS chipset will not be the Intel killer. 1. P4 CPU's do not need that amount of bandwidth, it is as simple as that. The Intel GB chipset will provide 4.2GB/s which funnily enough is exactly what the P4 can use - funny coincindence? Nope, planned. And before you start throwing in memory efficency you have to remember that the P4 itself can only achieve the 4.2GB/s in optimum conditions. That is why GB (Dual channel PC2100) is exactly what the P4 needs, increasing the bandwidth or even using PC2700 is a waste of time. 2. It's an SIS chipset for gods sake!! I'm sorry but SIS chipsets are never as reliable as Intel ones, even first generation Intel ones. It has been a very long time since Intel released anything that didn't work 100% on it's first revision. Even the 820 chipset with SDRAM (the last real failure from Intel if you like) only caused problems in some very obscure conditions - IE 99.9% of users would never have experienced the issue surroudning that setup or even had to know about it if Intel hadn't issued a full recall. The day SIS release anything as reliable, easy to setup and generally as good as an equivilent Intel chipset is the day I literally eat various items of my own clothing that I'd wear on my head. -
Win2k and ACPI is this my problem?

I am using the 30.82 drivers with my GF4 Ti4200 and I was also using these with my GF3 Ti200. These drivers have been 100% stable for me, not a single problem. I am yet to have any kind of success with the 40.xx drivers. Every single set I've installed have caused hard locks on my system, so I refuse to use them for a few builds yet.

Well after getting home from work this evening I logged on to collect all my e-mail for the day. Below is a cut & paste of the message I received: From: brentford43 [brentford43@hotmail.com] Subject: Worm Klez.E immunity "Klez.E is the most common world-wide spreading worm.It's very dangerous by corrupting your files. Because of its very smart stealth and anti-anti-virus technic,most common AV software can't detect or clean it. We developed this free immunity tool to defeat the malicious virus. You only need to run this tool once,and then Klez will never come into your PC. NOTE: Because this tool acts as a fake Klez to fool the real worm,some AV monitor maybe cry when you run it. If so,Ignore the warning,and select 'continue'. If you have any question,please mail to me." Attached to the mail was the file "The.scr" which of course Norton 2002 immediately picked up as being the W32.Klez.H@mm virus. As you can probably expect a few minutes work on the e-mail headers and the real sender (or rather their ISP and the modem they were connected to when they sent the message) was revealed. Let us hope that their abuse department sort this one out, although I'm tempted to take it further as it was a deliberate attempt to infect my system.

Tis a shame that with your first post on these forum's you are talking about piracy and theft of software. I do have one easy fix for you, go out and spend the money on the program you are obviously making use of. Cannot afford to buy it then chose an alternative product that you can afford. As far as I'm aware piracy is not an acceptable discussion topic on these forum's (unless it is in the "other" forum and is a general debate about the subject). -
Damn, I was beaten to it All Intel IDE controllers for the past few years have had the ability to run IDE devices at different speeds. So even an ATA-33 device along with an ATA-100 device will not result in either device slowing down - pretty nice feature. However, I cannot comment on other chipsets from VIA or SIS, I can only assume they have developed a similar feature.

Hi, I don't have the game so I cannot say for definite if this is your problem. However I do seem to remember issues with NHL 2001 unless you patch the game up to the very latest version (v1.03 I believe). There should be a shortcut in the NHL 2001 program group from your start menu which is "update" or similar. Run this and the game will automatically be updated to the latest version which will hopefully solve your problems. If you are already running the latest version we'll have to wait for somebody with the game to run some ideas past you

We don't allow anybody to send ping or traceroute to our public facing servers at work. We certainly aren't a target for hackers and then like, but then again there is no reason TO allow such requests to be processed. You want to ping something out on the Internet there are plenty of places you can do that at. -
Yer, the game just runs. Must admit I haven't played it for a while, however with the 1.1 patch the game ran fine on my system under WinXP Pro. Well, when I say fine, it runs as well under WinXP as any other OS - Black & White truly is not the most stable game in the world and can/will give you errors and crash for no apparent reason. If a game starts and then crashes and you've already checked to make sure you have the latest patch for the game, the first thing to look at would be video drivers.

A little harsh attack on Bursar there. His idea is actually rather sound as it kills two birds with one stone: 1. This is not a very common "feature" not one I'm familiar with, so let them explain in their own words what exactly they mean. 2. The very best way of finding out if any host is worthy of your money is to find out what kind of support they offer. If you fire off a pre-purchase question and they take a day or two to reply then be warned, their support probably runs on a similar time scale. Oh and a word of warning on hosts, if they are offering "unlimited" anything, either storage space or monthly transfer then run, run away before you spend anything. Unlimited does not mean anything - I'm yet to find a host that offers Unlimited and either delivers their promise or any kind of reliability. -
Not being from Canada I don't know what would be considered cheap or not. However as in both the UK and apparently the US Crucial make a nice 9700pro and include shipping in their price I wouldn't be suprised if their Canada site was equally good on price. Crucial Canada have the 9700pro for $369.89 including shipping.

Well that entirely depends on when he joins the beta test. Many beta products mature at a fair old rate and by the time the "general public" get to participate in the beta all is very stable. Now if you are joining the test from the alpha stage things are very different. Alpha Win95 had to be installed on a seperate PC and an average build would last a week before a new one was needed. After beta testing every MS OS since Win95 (Well, 98, NT4, 2000 & XP, I gave ME a miss) I tend to find that the beta builds we first get our hands on are usually pretty sound, although not something I'd want on my main system. I miss the chance to be able to play with the Alpha builds, Alpha 95 shipped on some 30+ floppy disks and was amazing to behold - alas MS don't seem to allow Alpha builds out of the building (officially) now a days.

4. The webmaster has used tables to create the page layout, meaning that the page has to load in its entirety before the browser can render it. Oh I hate sites that do that!! But I guess each Webmaster to their own

Slow web sites can be annoying, however I apreciate that there are probably reasons why a site is being slow: 1. The site is popular, the server is swamped which means the information there is good, I'll happily wait for good information. 2. The site is being run at a loss, ie it's a fan site or just a person with a regular job who looks after it, he/she cannot afford to buy a dedicated server an a really fast connection. I respect that just wait for things to load. 3. Networking problems beyond the hosts control, a routing table wrong on your own ISP can cause a site to load slow whereas the rest of the world has no problems. There are so many reasons and although it is nice to hit a URL and find the site opening in a matter of seconds if I do hit a slow site I'll wait as long as the information at the other end is good and what I was expecting. If however I've been waiting for five minutes for some bloody Flash introduction of website music to download which I really didn't want then I do get annoyed.

I have Office XP. I wanted FrontPage XP and with the rebate Microsoft were offering the upgrade from Office 2000 to Office XP was a real bargain. However, normally when it comes to Office I tend to miss versions out. The differences between Office 2k and Office XP do not warrant the upgrade price (at full price) unless you specifically need one of the products contained in the package. Office XP (In my opinion) is better, there are some nice features and I now love Outlook XP too, but it's not that much better.
