Brightness with Games and Monitor, please Help.

This is probably of little use to you, but I remember some of the old drivers that came with Diamond cards (and others) that would have utilities for storing the graphics settings of different applications (like games). I *think* powerstrip will do the same thing. But then again, I don't use it and it's just another worthless, wild-a$$ guess... ------------------ Regards, clutch -
I share out CDROMs all the time. You can share out pretty much anything on a system, and you can share out any hard drive that the system can see. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Do you have "File and Print Sharing" installed in the network properties? I am not booted into WinXP at the moment, but this is how the other OSs have done it. ------------------ Regards, clutch

NP. I thought this might work out better. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Try this one... www.driventechnologies.com/bookmarks/whact.cab ------------------ Regards, clutch

That's why I host my own email server. Road runner (and ameritech for that matter) seem to have a lot of issues with email. So I just host one on my cable modem. ------------------ Regards, clutch

If you are using the DHCP of the router, then have "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" selected. I don't think the router DHCP is going to tell the PCs anything about NetBIOS settings. ------------------ Regards, clutch

List all the components of you network (hubs, switches, routers, NICs, etc), then we'll see what to do with them. ------------------ Regards, clutch

When I use Win+L, it just locks the station for me. Do you guys have "Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Del" checked under the advanced tab in User Accounts? I don't know why there would be a difference in presentation between 2 machines using the same version of OS. I would think that if WinXP Pro was not attached to a network (hence being its own domain) it would still have the C-A-D logon/taskman prompt as in every workstation level OS before it. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Santa-Jack, do you have anymore info on this? I am still interested in how you got this to work. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I am about to drop mine to 64MB myself. I am peaking at 300MB of RAM usage with some CAD apps and other stuff, while I have 384MB RAM and a 128MB pagefile. ------------------ Regards, clutch

You are sooooo wrong dude. They are pot smokers. Duh. ------------------ Regards, clutch

You don't have any BDCs that you can promote? That way you can do a fresh install and keep the data on D:. As far as your idea goes, I don't know if it will work all that well. But I have not done it that way before, I have just used Drive Copy or something similar. edit Duh, I just sent an email to the originator of this post, but I thought I would post this anyway. The copied/imaged installation will still be looking for the SCSI driver and will try to load it at boot. If the machine that it is installed into does not have a hard disk subsystem that can use the same driver, then the boot will go to BSOD before you will ever see the logon screen. I can't believe I forgot that. And again, duh. /edit ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 06 April 2001).]

OK. It sounds like most, if not all of this, is a result of poor name resolution. If you are using NT Server, install the WINS service (Go to network properties, then services tab, select "add" and find "Windows Internet Name Service"). Then, after the reboot, setup the WINS IP to be given out by the DHCP service (I am assuming that you are using the DHCP service on the NT Server). After all of this, reboot the clients a couple of times each. Now, what will happen is that all the PCs will get proper name resolution abilities, then they should be able to get the policy file off of the server. After another reboot or two the policies should load and be fine. WINS is the MS version of DNS. It just happens to be dynamic and fairly self-adjusting. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Is your router issuing IPs? Can that, and disable the master browsing ability on one of the machines (leave it running on the machine that is on the most). Also, if you can connect by name in one direction, then TCP/IP stacks *should* be fine, but you can always reinstall them as per the last suggestion. Another thing that you could do is use a LMHOSTS file for name resolution. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Bear in mind these are the same people that canned the SpaceOrb game controller after they bought out Spacetec. So who knows what they have in mind for Razer. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I didn't change anything. And honestly, a difference like that seems more like a difference between personal and professional versions. I can see the personal version not having the lock/logout/task manager settings like pro does. ------------------ Regards, clutch

What applications are you using? Anything like database development or CAD/CAM? The best thing that I have seen is to use task manager as a guide. Basically, I just run the machine with everything that I would want to use at once, then calculate the Peak Commit Charge (K) + the Total Kernel Memory. I like the absolute peak of that to be about 80% of the total System memory. So, if I had a system with 256MB RAM, and peaked at 200MB used, I would probably just have a 50-100 fixed (min and max set the same) pagefile. Does this help? ------------------ Regards, clutch

I would try the SiS on-board video. You *may* get a crappy OpenGL mini-driver that can get you into the game. Either that, or dig up your old Voodoo1... ------------------ Regards, clutch

geforce 2 in win2k - Direct3D works great, OpenGL won't work

Oh, and as far as the lack of responses go, I have not had that issue myself and I would have thought an "I don't know" or "It works for me" response would have sucked (especially since others have been bashed for stating similar answers). I have a feeling that others were in the same boat as me, and not just trying to dis you. ------------------ Regards, clutch -
