No, it does not have anything to do with basic/dynamic disks. It means that you can add another disk to an array (or subtract one for that matter). It sounds like it is referring to the ability of the controller to do that, and not NT's disk administrator which does not have that ability. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Anyone know how to fix Nvidia 60 hz refresh rate prob in bet
clutch replied to Asmo's topic in Hardware
Would the refresh rate utility work? http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/nvreffix/ I use it for Win2K, but I don't know how if it works in WinXP. I thought they used the same drivers, hence the same reg entries which is what this thing works with. ------------------ Regards, clutch -
Is this a strictly local installation onto a workstation? If so, it could be registry key permissions. I had the same problem with WinFAS, and I had to give R/W access to ODBC and a couple of other keys. If it's a network install, I would check the share and NTFS permissions for the applications in question. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Oh, and to all the Linux fans out there, you are going to love this. I got it in an email bulletin. "Emergent virus can infect Windows, Linux" The mutation of emerging viruses continues to alarm security experts, following the detection of a two-faced villain that can infect both Windows and Linux computers. Dubbed W32.Winux, the virus has no destructive payload, and no companies have reported being infected. Nonetheless, security experts are disturbed by the successful creation of a multiple-environment worm. W32.Winux infects executable programs that run on either Windows 95/98/NT/Me/2000 or the many Linux variations. Once activated, the virus automatically searches for all nearby Windows or Linux applications of at least 100K bytes in size, which it then proceeds to infect. IT companies make money off of selling to other companies and corporations, that's why you don't see it that often. Cisco is huge, but you don't see a Cisco router or PIX in everybody's home, do you? The only reason most people even know Cisco exists is because of their marketing and their sheer size. You wont see Novell on small LANs, (which used to be the domain of LANTASTIC, but you probably never heard of them either) but rather large corporate networks. I met this admin for Jockey International (yes, the underwear company) and they have 700+ users at this one facility. They have 25 NT servers for file sharing, exchange and such, and one Novell 5 server for file sharing to the whole domain. This is the one that they haven't rebooted in the last two years. This is why nobody wants to upgrade, and hence no more money for Novell. ------------------ Regards, clutch

This is a pretty cool link that shows a simplified explanation of DNS implementation in Win2K. I don't know if the link requires membership, but membership is free anyway. http://www.informit.com/content/index.as...}&news=true ------------------ Regards, clutch

Once you are registered, you can save articles there to "MyInformIT", which is like a personal library of links. ------------------ Regards, clutch

It's erroneous name resolution. Check out the posts in this thread, as they should give you the info to fix it. If it doesn't help, post here again. http://www.ntcompatible.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000380.html ------------------ Regards, clutch

Impressions are generally "first time" hits (that's what I read, but I could be way off). From what I did read, some sites use the "impressions" count to drum up business for advertising. As far as policies go, I use Surf Control at our company, and it locks down on sites based on DNS requests. It can also do reporting on user and/or workstation, such as most use, host hits for a give site, etc. Mine is just setup so if someone tries to go to a **** site, it will send me an alert email. In addition, only certain people are allowed online (mostly the ones that signed the acceptable use policy) and this is monitored through the info in the DNS packet and then compared to the SAM for approval validation. The system works quite well, though we did have some problems where people were allowed to go to unauthorized pages because the system read them as "smsclisvcacct&", which is the SMS client that is installed on each PC. That's the only issue that we have had. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Oh, umm, sorry about that . I just feel that if I let this view perpetuate without intervening, then I am contibuting to it. I am pro MS and I love the NT methodology, I just want to make sure that people reading some of these posts get a balanced view of what is going on. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I can write a few. Would you like them sent to you in HTML, word doc, or just text? ------------------ Regards, clutch

I thought this is something some of the peeps could relate to: If this is what it takes to get through solitare nowadays, I think I'll stick with Q3... *This is from www.somethingawful.com in Cliff's "I Hate You" section. There are some real prize winners there. ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 28 March 2001).]

INFERNO, it looks like I may not make the LAN party afterall. We have a major barcoding system being installed during that timeframe. But, I will be at least stopping by the party in Kenosha (as I live there it's easy to just drop in). Don't suppose you will be making it out this way, would you? http://www.lan-force.com/ I am listed as {SC}Judge Mental ------------------ Regards, clutch

RAS does have call back functionality, but I am not certain as to how it's setup, or if it supports caller ID. The settings that I have seen for call back are generally static; you enter a phone number that the server will always call back to when it receives a call. This system controls who can call in by making sure that the call source location is approved. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I would like to see a "how-to" section for setting things up, like WINS, DNS, creating users, basic networking, slipstreaming, etc. Most of it could be comprised of existing posts with a little bit of editing. The percentage idea would be kind of neat too. It would be nice to see a running total/percentage of apps that do work vs those that don't. ------------------ Regards, clutch

A simply brilliant argument, sir. *Through megaphone outside a secluded residence* "Pimpin! Please step AWAY from the bong and come towards the sound of my voice! And put down those damn Funyuns!" ------------------ Regards, clutch -
Brian, you may want to do a bit more research before you pass judgement on Novell. Just so you know, it isn't that Novell makes a poor product; not by a long shot. As a matter of fact, they populate 81% of Forbes 500 company networks. The problem is that it runs almost TOO well. They can't sell any upgrades, and that's killing them. They have been trying to get version 5 into the doors of theses companies and NDS (Novell Directory Services) with it. It's just that it's a tough sell when many networks are hummimng along with 3.x systems that haven't been rebooted in the last 2 or 3 years (yes, 2 or 3 years). And as far as Windows being on 90% of systems out there has more to do with home/workstation PCs rather than servers. Novell is in the server market, not the workstation market. Novell NEEDED MS to make client OSs so there would be something to connect to their server/network OS. Another major problem was support. Their Client32 could kill just about any OS install that it had a slight issue with (similar to most Symantec products that I have seen ). But it was NEVER Novell's fault, even though they had a fix for it on their site. I'll tell ya, the first experience that I had with networks was Novell 3.11, and that system ran REALLY well. One server, and it would do pretty much anything you wanted. In addition, it was built to be managed while AWAY from the server, not from the console directly. So, saying that they are "D E A D", while not ever having even used it, is a bit bold. It is a great system, but it is being done in by its outrageous cost and superior attitude. Novell did, however, recently purchase a large consulting company in the hopes that they can get back into enterprises and get NDS back on people's minds. Only time will tell... ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 28 March 2001).]

Yes, I know that was four and twenty, and I know he doesn't have a helicopter. It was more of a general reference that "bad posts" aren't limited to just flames. Of course, any of these posts are welcome in the "Other" forum, or more specifically the "I don't mean..." thread. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I don't know anything either. ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 28 March 2001).]

If I were you, I wouldn't give a damn about what the other users in this forum think about you. How many people have flamed you or called you a moron? 1? 2? Doesn't seem to count much in the grand scheme of things, does it? ------------------ Regards, clutch

This is a cool link for you guys with name resolution issues (or who just want to tinker). I had to dig this up because I needed to flush the DNS cache on our Exchange server. http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/win2000/win2ksrv/reskit/tcpch03.asp ------------------ Regards, clutch

While I think you did go WAY overboard on that post Cardinal is writing about, I think that in the overall picture you have been fine. I also think that Card had a bit of a delayed reaction to it, and was (at this time) a little out-of-context when he read the post. As far as banning goes, I vote to ban all of the dipsh1t posts about who has weed, who doesn't, and who has helicopters to get from one place to another (I can only imagine what a new person to this forum would think of my statement just then). Honestly, if peeps want to flame each other, take it the "Other" forum along with the talk of drugs and what not. Now, if you get into a debate about a particular view of solving a problem, then I am all for it staying in the appropriate area. But when it gets personal, take it "outside". If it is a *completely* useless post, then put it in "I don't mean..." in the OTHER forum. We really NEED 1000 posts in that bad boy. Besides, if SHS or Philipp haven't posted anything about banning, then they are probably ignoring/laughing at the flame wars anyway. ------------------ Regards, clutch
