What are the specs of your system? I would be interested to know. The observations on memory performance seem odd to me, since a major reason why I use Win2K is for it's superior memory management abiltiy over the 9x OS. ------------------ Regards, clutch

The only way I would know is to use the shutdown.exe from the NT Resource Kit and the AT Command Scheduler. ------------------ Regards, clutch

added 256 megs of ram now computer periodiclly reboots

I have mixed them running at 133, and not had problems. Then again, a cheap stick of PC100 may have a hard enough time running at 100, let alone anything else. All you are doing is overclocking the RAM, so most of the typical CPU overclocking rules apply. ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 12 February 2001).] -
Here's the Plextor on Egghead.com. Looks pretty cool... http://pecos.egghead.com/isapi/isapi.dll?Command=ServePage.exe&sku=395595&t=8&f=1 ------------------ Regards, clutch

Enable IP forwarding on the box with 2 NICs. That *should* do it. If not, you may have to configure Routing and Remote Access. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Quote: <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by EddiE314: its not like you'd use IE in Linux</font> That was what I meant. Saying that something works better on one platform than another would usually indicate that it was tuned for one of them. I just feel that this is in fact not the case, and it just happens to be better than what's available for Linux. Netscape was great at versions 1-3, and worked well with 4 (kind of a pig, but so was IE4). But the development of NS browsers stalled, and now they seem to be shooting themselves in the foot with the NS6 implementation. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I have an ASUS P3B-F that gives me the same issue when I put memory in the 4th slot. It's just a bad slot in my case, but it could be something to look at as well. ------------------ Regards, clutch -
The All-In-Blunder series from ATI work well for general and limited video use (I have one based on the Rage Pro) with camcorders and such. I have seen the 3500s at Best Buy still, but you can probably find them online too. As far as a card for the K6, I would just get a GeForce MX. ------------------ Regards, clutch

There are only 2 ways that I have done full restores: 1. Some sort of imaging program (Drive Copy, Ghost, etc.) 2. Install to a another directory (instead of WINNT I use WINNT2 or WIN2K), then restore everything from before and delete the second install if needed. I haven't seen any successful restores on top of a new install. Usually, I wind up just doing a temp install to get the backup up and running (or use a network boot floppy so a tape drive on another server can do the restore) and then restore the old install to its original location. ------------------ Regards, clutch

The last time I tried to move a Win2K install from one motherboard to another I got a ton of blue screens (IDE driver related) for my trouble. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Is it OK in Linux because it works well, or OK because there is nothing better that's available? ------------------ Regards, clutch

Did you upgrade to Dynamic Disks by chance? Some wierd things can happen when you do that. ------------------ Regards, clutch -
My input? Hook up with that "m8" and get a job at the computer store. Consulting isn't as easy as it looks. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Sorry bud. No idea, as I don't use the software-based routing methods that much. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Like I said, don't worry about the lines. They are only on Aperture Grill tubes (from Sony or Mitsubishi). The main difference between the AG units and other models is the AG mesh that is used. CRTs have used a "shadow mask" method for lining up the pixels on the monitor, whereas the AG units have a fine threaded mesh that runs from top to bottom. The 2 thin lines across the monitor hold the mesh in position. The mesh allows for a brighter monitor without the fuzzy "bleedover" of image from one pixel to the other. Hence, the sharp text that is somewhat uniform at any point of the monitor. The lines are smaller if the dot pitch is smaller, so older 17" and 15" units will be more pronounced than the current ones ranging from .22 to .25 depending on the model. ------------------ Regards, clutch

It's very easy to fill a log in a few minutes. I have seen this with DNS and Netlogon errors in NT, and McAfee 4.x (before 4.5) in Win2K using dynamic disks. If the system feels really sluggish and you can get into the event viewer, try to stop the logging service and fix the issue. I had to stop the event log service for the McAfee problem, then I was able to uninstall the program. I couldn't uninstall McAfee while the log was running due to the rapid filling of it. ------------------ Regards, clutch

If you sat in front of one and didn't see them, you'll never notice. I have used Trinitron AG monitors for the last 2 years and the lines don't bother me at all. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Besides, "Nero Rulz!" ------------------ Regards, clutch -
As long as the AG grid support lines don't bother you (the 2 lines running from side to side across the screen) then get the Sony. Very bright, clear image. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I have both, and I dig Nero. Lean and fast. ------------------ Regards, clutch -
In addition, the MFT is never one contiguous block like it is when you format in NTFS. Formatted NTFS installs are faster than converted ones. I was trying to find some old links that I posted here, but they have been pruned from the board database. Here are the ones that I can find: http://www.winntmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=4875&SearchString=ntfs&pg=1 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/deploy/fat.asp http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/winresource/dnwinnt/S8394.HTM There is one in particular that I am looking for, if I find it I will post that one as well. ------------------ Regards, clutch
