What statistics were these? Where did you get them? How about statistics showing which OS has the most "zombies" to their credit for DoS attacks? Holes are everywhere, that's how it is. You patch them and move on. Like the Notes hole found recently that allowed anyone with normal mail access to access any account on the server. That was a real winner. If you don't care for Windows, then why come here? ------------------ Regards, clutch

OK, I just saw "PC-DOS" listed, and from what I learned PC-DOS was licensed from MS. Besides, didn't Apple rape their ideas from somebody else? It would seem difficult to give credit for the modern GUI/OS to any one company. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Ummm, it's not set to auto hide is it? Run the mouse pointer along all of the edges to see if it pops up. ------------------ Regards, clutch

So DirectShow and DirectSound don't fall under DirectX? I was checking the DirectX site, and it does seem geared to gaming, however it does call it a "multimedia API" and essentially a HAL. In addition, I found this link: http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/win98/Reskit/Part6/wrkc30.asp Which seems to list DirectX as more than a gaming API. If you guys want DX posts in gaming, that's cool. I am just telling why I don't understand it. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Isn't DX required for Media Player? DX updates are required for some versions of video drivers, and I use those same drivers for Solidworks, eDrawings, and other 3D applications. It's an API for talking to hardware, therefore the reason for the post location. ------------------ Regards, clutch

It was moved to "Games", as was mine. Strange, as I thought it would have more to do with hardware (hardware/driver compatabilty with DX8) than with games. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Scoped this at www.voodooextreme.com http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000pro/redist/8.0a/W9X2KMe/EN-US/DX8a_redist.exe ------------------ Regards, clutch

Wasn't PC-DOS a licensed version of MS-DOS? http://www.theosfiles.com/os_dos/ospg_dos_pcdos.htm ------------------ Regards, clutch

Odd, it seems to still work for me. Anybody else? ------------------ Regards, clutch

Ahh, my apologies then. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Depends on the drives and the controller. I am not familiar with your other config options, but here's the deal. A hard disk states that it is ATA100 compliant. Now, it may burst at 100MB/s, but it will probably not hold that rate as an average. If you get 2 hard disks in RAID 0 (parrallel), then there is a much higher possibility of hitting the peak of the controller (which is cool, since you would like to utilize as much of the hardware as you can). If you have 2 ATA66 drives, and an ATA100 controller, the odds are slim that you will peak that very often since the theoretical peak would be 132MB/s and you may average about 50%-70% of the b/w of the drive spec. If I didn't answer your question (which is likely), it is because I am in class for this wonderful Winnt to Win2K exam until 10:30PM. I will review this at work tomorrow to see if it makes sense... ------------------ Regards, clutch

So what? It's both "other" and "stupid". I don't see anything stating that you cannot post "stupid" topics to the "other" forum. Besides, it's *kinda* funny... e Actually, I take some of that back. I remember thinking it was funny the first time I saw this (a few months ago I think) and I can see how others may find it amusing. But, I am glad that you are here to alert us of the low quality of this post, and that you will continue to monitor this forum for more abominations like this one. I can now sleep better... /e ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 25 January 2001).]

With that much RAM and no HUGE applications? I would have to say can that page file. It may be a good idea to keep it at 2MB or whatever for the mini-dump. But other than that, it shouldn't make much of a difference if you have a tiny page file or not. But I know what you mean about the pissy part. Though I don't recall it telling me that it would increase it on its own. ------------------ Regards, clutch

I had the same thing happen with a GeForce SDR from a Dell PC. I could use any setting, but no difference. I put in a VisionTek GeForce SDR, and it worked fine. Same drivers (6.31) and same hardware config. In addition, I don't think you have enough processor to make the overclocking worth it, besides, the memory is running so close the max spec that it probably wont go any further. ------------------ Regards, clutch

RAID 0 is striped, generally running the total of the lowest common denominator (smallest disk size) times the number of disks. RAID 1 is mirroring (or duplexing if multiple controllers are used) and is equal to the lowest common denominator (smallest disk size). RAID 5 is the striping of data with parity across all disks and is equal to the lowest common denominator (smallest disk size) times the numbers of disks, minus the reciprocal of the number of disks. For example, you have 5 20GB disks, and you want to run them in RAID 5. You would have 100GB total, less 1/5 (20% or 1 disk) which equals 80GB. You will lose roughly 1 disk worth of space to parity in this configuration. I hope this answers your question as far as disk space, as you should have about 60GB rather than 30GB in a RAID 0. Think of "0" as "Zero Insurance". ------------------ Regards, clutch

I don't even check out those sites anymore. That's about 70% of the bookmarks that I have, and with that many I have to keep the games entry limited. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Here's a few things to look for though. In NT (3.51 used 5 files and 4.0 uses 6 files), you could run the UPTOMP.EXE util to update from single to multi-proc configs. All that you really had to do was edit a few pointer files, and then re-run your latest service pack. Since the service updates the files that the utility modified, you could just do it manually. As far as running the repair utility, it has the lovely side-benefit of occasionally steam-rolling the registry, and rolling you back to an earlier SP level if you don't use an rdisk floppy (which would probably defeat the purpose since it would likely have info the the HAL anyway). What *I* would is: 1. Go to http://search.microsoft.com and enter "upgrade to mulitple processor" 2. Follow the info on the first link (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q234/5/58.ASP) which made sense 3. Read it and find out that it remarkably similar to what Impala SS stated e Here's another spiffy link with some pics of the changeover process: http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=14641 HTH /e ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 24 January 2001).]

Switches are great for large file transfers. I am using the built-in switch with the Linksys router at the moment, and it works well. I was quite surpised by the transfer times (in some cases, I can move the files in less than half the time it took before) over my D-Link 8-port 10/100 unit. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Here's a link to the links I have. I tried to filter out the "questionable" ones as much as possible... http://www.driventechnologies.com/bookmarks/ ------------------ Regards, clutch

Bingo. It's only good if you don't have logging, yet you are paranoid. I am not concerned about apps getting out. But, some want another layer between them and the world. Can't fault them for it. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Sweet... Tnx. ------------------ Regards, clutch

As a guess, I *think* that you could use a service conversion app (FireDaemon is one, or something like that). In that case, you *should* be able to build dependencies that would allow for this kind of control that you need. If I see anything, I will post it. ------------------ Regards, clutch

Sure. I have a TON of Exchange, IIS, ASP, and other nifty links that others may like. I don't know how to set it up tho. What I will try to do is setup a page on my server with the exported links. If I do it, I will let you know. e I have a file with most of my relevant bookmarks on it, and they are categorized. I have a class tonight, but afterward I will try to setup a regular site at home to host it. /e ------------------ Regards, clutch [This message has been edited by clutch (edited 23 January 2001).]

Well, my PC boot times aren't that long (about 1 to 1.5 min). However, for true servers, expect slow boot times. Why? Well, you have a longer hardware POST than usual (SCSI controllers, Array checks, etc) plus you have Netlogon activity (SAM/AD verification and update, DHCP zone authorization, DNS sync, etc). Servers take longer to boot, period. The more you're serving, the longer it takes. If server boot time is THAT critical, then go to clustering. God help you if you have to bring up an entire cluster all at once tho... ------------------ Regards, clutch

Another one is www.iisanswers.com. That one is pretty cool (includes a spiffy newsletter as well). ------------------ Regards, clutch
