COmputername dislayed in metwork browser evn the user logout
clutch replied to rajat's topic in Networking
The user being logged in or out has no bearing on the machine showing up on the network. If the machine is on and online, it will register its name with a WINS box (if available) and the Master Browser (these are the systems that handle your request when you use "Network Neighborhood"). Also, a machine can still be listed for up to an hour after it has been shutdown if it didn't get to properly remove itself from both of the aforementioned systems while shutting down. -
Now What's The Better Choice, W2K SP3 or WXP SP1?
clutch replied to CyberGenX's topic in Slack Space
It depends on the hardware and situation, but of the two I would go with XP SP1. It's odd that it wouldn't work with the other person's RAID 0 config, as I have two workstations using that (one with a SCSI controller, the other with an onboard HPT372 controller) and they worked great even before SP1. -
Check out DVD players from Switzerland and such. You can get them modified to have those things disabled and have progressive scan support for HDTVs.

Any company can take control of any system once you install their respective software packages. Unless you have direct access to their source code for that particular application and have the knowledge to understand it, you will never *really* know what it does. If you are that paranoid, learn C/C++ and Java and go to Linux...

First, I thought I had the right nVidia drivers for my GF2 Pro loaded during installation, but now I don't know. And I don't know if I have 3D acceleration enabled. Now, I installed the demo and all I get is the splash screen, no game. It's installed in /usr/local/games/ut2003demo, and the permissions are opened up to everyone. It will not run in my user account nor in root. Update, in trying to get the newest drivers install my xserver will no longer start. So, there's another problem I would be more than happy to have someone address.
-
Oddly enough, it started showing up in full screen at 8x6 later on, and has stayed that way ever since. It looks incredible, but the framerate is a bit slow (GF2 Pro with my P3 933, I didn't think it was *that* slow of a PC) so I have been trying to find out how to benchmark it. I can do it in WinXP with "benchmark.exe", but I can't seem to find a "benchmark.sh" or anything similar in the Linux version.
-
Got it running now (needed a sym link to the source code under /usr/src), but I would like to know how to benchmark it. Also, it seems "windowed" but I know it isn't, any ideas on how I can get it running full screen?
-
OK, got it running under Linux too, but does anyone know how to bench it in there?

OK, I am about to do my 3rd install, as the last 2 have been completely broken by the nVidia drivers. All they do is whine and complain about symbols, and I have no idea what the fuk they are talking about. The NVchooser does not work, and I have tried the RPMs, the tarballs, and even making my own with the source code (which complained about not finding some other files). I have been doing all of this while using the README from the drivers, and while it seems fairly complete it's completely worthless to me since the drivers never load. I got them to sort of install once using the --force option, but when tried using -e to remove them it claimed they weren't installed, and when you try to install them it claimed that they were already there. So, does anybody here have any idea wtf is going on?

Anybody here know anything about Linux? If so, help me get that POS OS running this damn game. http://www.linuxcompatible.org./forums/viewtopic.php?t=51&sid=e2f8b6084fb42c845856f0b58d57f086

Here's the error I get running NVchooser NVchooser.sh: line 315: syntax error near unexpected token `elif' NVchooser.sh: line 315: `elif [ \( "$distro" = "mdk" -a "$version" -ge 82 \) ]; 'hen Any ideas what that means?
-
I tried to run the NVChooser, and it wouldn't launch as I didn't seem to know whatever switches it needs to get going. In any case, the trying to remove the drivers using "rpm -e" would only tell me that the kernel drivers weren't installed (which they were), and running "rpm -U" would tell me that they were already installed (which I knew). So I decided to do a fresh install of RH 7.3 on this box since it's one that I was only learning on anyway. Honestly, getting things to run in Linux is a ridiculous pain in the a$$.
-
Quote: Under VMWare? Not a chance in hell. If you have RH installed on its own partition then are you absolutely positively sure you have the 3D drivers installed and running properly? Apparently they can be a little troublesome to get working properly, the nVidia Linux drivers especially. Umm, nope. I have RH installed on another PC at home and I tried getting it to install there as well. If you have any ideas, check out the thread under games at www.linuxcompatible.org.

Flyby: 140+ Botmatch: 51+ Running 1024x768 on Alyssa. BTW, I don't suppose anyone knows how to get the damn thing running on RH 7.3 eh? I have been trying to check my drivers and the game only launches the splash screen, but that's it. I am going to post this to the linuxcomp forum as well.

Long time no see Doc. This game is pretty damn cool. I am all over it when it comes out. Right now I am downloading the Linux version so I can see how well it runs.

So what 3rd party IM client have you seen that supports server-side saving of buddy lists to MSN and Yahoo? I'm interested to know who can...

Update on the DOS Server stuff; I found a site that is hosting mirrors of the files, but the original page that had directions on using them (and links to them) is now dead. However, Google still has the cached one, so here is a link with the directions and the links to the files that you need to make a DOS Server. http://216.239.53.100/search?q=cache:Kou...=2&ie=UTF-8

I had to setup DOS servers a long time ago, and what you are looking for is the MSClient disks from an NT 3.51 or better CD, and WG1049.EXE. Here are a couple of links detailing the setup of networking and serving in DOS with links to these files. If the files are not available, let me know and we'll try to find another way to get them to you. http://www.hippy.freeserve.co.uk/msdosnet.htm http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/Dosservr.htm

Well, I'm just happy to get the Java JRE finally working as a plugin with Mozilla. Once it was done, it turned out to be quite simple, but it was a matter of getting used to the mentality.

If you have needed a way to get into Terminal Server sessions (Citrix, NT Terminal Server, Win2K Terminal Services, WinXP Remote Desktop) from Linux then this is the way to go. It works rather well, and is *very* fast to load up. www.rdesktop.org

I donated $10 a while back, and then I got this invitation out of the blue to get this new version. It seems pretty nice, but I have never really been a power user of IM clients so I don't think that I am "tapping" its potential just yet.

OK, so I will be going back to school in Spring of '03 to pursue a CS degree, and they run Linux almost exclusively. So, I figured that I would brush up on my Linux now and beat the rush. In doing so, I go the trial version of VMware to see if it would be something I want to use so I can work with Linux more conveniently, and it seems to be a ridiculously painful and slow process to install RH 7.3 with it. I was just wondering if others have experienced this, and what kind of performance I should expect from running RH in VMware on a Windows PC, and to see if others have run Windows in VMware on Linux. Here's the following specs on my work PC: Dual 2GHz Xeons 1GB RDRAM Twin 32GB SCSI drives in RAID 0 (virtual disk is on there) 1 UATA-100 100GB drive 16x DVD-ROM 40x24x40 Plextor CD-RW

Yep. I am looking at database/application development, but more focused on web applications. I am tired of part of my job being PC/application support (PC Janitor). I have one degree in electronics already, so I figured I might as well get this one since I have been doing it long enough.

I order workstations from them all the time, which is why I have a dedicated small business team rep and he has a small circle of support staff to help him. I can usually get what I want in a system, he just has to ask his crew to make sure that all the parts work together. Bear in mind that those listings on their website aren't set in stone, but the warnings are setup from their most popular and stable combinations (hence the Optiplex workstations have Quadros and better rather than the latest and greatest consumer cards for the sake of stability). Just call them directly and they'll be willing to sell you pretty much whatever you want.

Sweet! The directions was what I needed, imagine that...
