TCP if I remember correctly. The last few times I set it up was on a router that didn't differentiate between the two.

Is SAMBA setup to run as Browse Master? Are you running a regular workgroup, or a domain? What protocol(s) are you using (anything other than TCP/IP)? Can the Win2K box use shares on the server? Is the Win2K box configured to logon to the same workgroup? Has this network ever worked properly with these machines?

This thread has spiraled downward enough due to one person, so it's over.

Generally, yes. I can't think of how many times I have been to this software site that shows up on the banners here. They have awful pricing, but I click it anyway. Also, I click on the Crucial memory ones quite a bit, as I have an account with them at work and we get memory from time to time. I thought the hosting site gets a cut of the sale, but I don't know if that's true, or if it applies to corporate accounts.

Yeah, I have a test box at work that is on its 3rd install of XP Pro, so I think I will try it on that one.

No, but I would rather look at her pic than mine. For those who haven't seen both, here ya go... Alyssa Milano: Me in my pimp outfit for Halloween at work: I guess you could see why I would change them now.

OK, dumb question, but do these logon UI mods work in XP Pro? I didn't see domain selection or the ability to enter a new user in the screen caps, and I don't have WinXP Home to fiddle with (nor do I need it).

Nice link, tnx.

Those are pretty cool bud. So what programs are next for the XP treatment?

On that list I sent, here is what it shows: dhcpv6-client 546/tcp DHCPv6 Client dhcpv6-client 546/udp DHCPv6 Client dhcpv6-server 547/tcp DHCPv6 Server dhcpv6-server 547/udp DHCPv6 Server However, using a port sniffer, I see the server at port 67 and the client at port 68. I haven't had a need to research this internally before, so I am not sure what DHCPv6 entails vs the bootstrap variant at these lower port numbers.

I am using it now, and it seems ok (but I thought it was the same 1.3.1 version he spoke of already) in Win2K with IE 5.5. Can you view the applet at http://visualroute.visualware.com? I thought you were having problems with internal sites, and was hoping that there were some external examples you could show us.

Sorry dude, don't have the answer off the top of my head. We just offered methods on finding it.

XP about the same? I didn't know if you were testing XP that much yet.

Normally, you can right click on something and a "What's this?" selection will come up. Those usually have pretty decent explanations. Now, to get you up to speed on WinXP networking (and networking in general), check this out: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevie...jj_ipa_irjk.asp Just follow along the TOC on the left, and you can browse the topics or just read straight through.

But I don't believe you can both run GUI sessions off of the same WinXP system at the same time. The underpinnings from Remote Desktop come from Win2K Terminal Services, but it's capped to one user at a time, and will kill the local user's console session if an admin tries to log on remotely.

What do you mean when you say you can't "see" it? You can't get to \\server\joe$ from Bob's PC? You aren't going to see hidden shares ($ suffix) from other systems anyway, but you can still connect to them. Also, make sure that the share permissions AND any NTFS permissions allow for Bob to get into Joe's share.

Quote: System Scock 2 (though this game should be finished ALONE the first time through) 9 Umm, was that a spinoff of a p0rn movie? Anyway, I would have to say... Q3A (any variant) 9 UT (any variant) 8 (not so much for LAN play, but that the game is more CPU dependant than anything else) Forsaken (what is that? ) 10

You can also go here and look it up.

Cool! That would make sense, as your ISP's DNS servers would either not be able to accept DDNS (Dynamic DNS) updates, or not be allowed to do so. It's generally reserved for Win2K DNS servers (I don't think any other DNS systems allow dynamic updates), so I can't imagine that you would be affected by leaving it disabled on both machines.

Ouch. No, I don't believe those would be easily changed.

ATI? Ooohhhhh..... What card do you have? I hope not any of the Rage/Rage Pro/Rage 128 lines, as they are notorious for having poor OpenGL performance issues, especially in NT-based OSs. I have 4 engineers here that had Rage Pro video cards in their PCs, and when we went to Solidworks 2000 from Autocad R14 (3D parasolids vs. 2D drawings) we had all kinds of problems in NT4 using EDrawings and performing imports of drawings from other systems (Unigraphics, Catia, etc). I tried several different drivers from ATI, and I got one that was semi-stable with a newer release of EDrawings, but we would still get occasional issues. I got them GeForce MX-based cards, and they haven't had problems since.

Quote: ohhhhh You cant change it. Workgroup and Domain are an either-or thing. There shoudl be a workgroup called "Domain" where the XP box shows up. Which I think he mentioned he had going on before; his WinXP box was showing up in the "group" DOMAIN, with the servers (surprise, surprise). I had to blow the dust off of my Win98 laptop, and now I remember what he is talking about. That is more of a "flaw" of Win9X networking abilities, rather than a feature. Win9X can cache logon credentials in an effort to logon to a domain/workgroup, while presenting itself to a browse master as being part of another group (although it would use the domain by default during logon if so chosen). That is why all of your servers are sitting in DOMAIN and not able to be changed. If anything, I would have to say that the box is in a state of confusion more than anything else as you are telling it to authenticate against DCs in a domain, yet browse and act as a member of a workgroup for the sake of organization. I get the feeling that you guys will be doing a bit of overhauling to your network when you migrate to NT-based OSs...
