NEED only the most intelligent and clever!!!

Volitaire, Go do some research on the X-box and you'll know. I hardly doubt you'll be able to install your own OS on to the X-box, first and for most you'd have to boot from the DVD drive. Not hardly. I doubt Microsoft is going to let you be able to format the harddrive as you see fit. This is pure speculation, but I'd bet the house you wouldn't be able too. To All, Another thing, do you guys realize how POWERFUL the Nvidia chip is going to be on the X-box??? 300 MILLION polygons/sec!! Okay, lets see an SGI Onyx2 Rack System with 24 R10000 processors and Reality Monster Engine graphics (with 16 graphics pipes) does up to 210 Million Polys/sec. Oh and that system costs over a $1 Million. It seems inevitable that PC's will probably take over the graphics industry someday soon. Amazing.

NEED only the most intelligent and clever!!!

Okay, based on what you said. Then answer me this question wise guy. Why is the X-Box using Windows 2000???? You can't answer that can you. They didn't know Win 2K was going to be this BIG and popular. So they say It's a business platform so that it doesn't cut in on theirs sales of ME and 98SE. It's marketing strategy to swallow up as many buyers as they can. Well, I'm not fooled, I want the best and that's Windows 2000. PERIOD!

You wanna know how to put an end to that??? Don't buy EA's games until they support it. Screw 'em!!

Why the serious gamer should upgrade to Windows 2000

Is the DVD software on the Win 2000 CD? When I put a DVD in the drive it says I don't have any software installed. I guess I'll have to go look on that Win 2K cd tonight. I just always boot into Win 98 to play DVD's. Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheated by HP ?

yeah it's a called a windows 2000 cd man. Drivers should be on the disk.

3d Prophet with DDR... Win2k drivers needed

I don't mean to be an ass, but are you BLIND?The Prophet is just like all the other Geforce cards + a few other features. Why didn't you just use the 5.13 Nvidia Reference drivers for NT 4.0??? You need to GENERALIZE your search over at Microsoft and not look up the Prophet and instead look up GEFORCE...that's all that matters when it comes to drivers. Oh well, I hope you are happy with your ATI.

    Too fast. I need help.

I can't imagine those games running TOO fast on your Banshee card. Very strange problem. Never heard of it or seen it. I'll look into it for you.

    Good sound card

yes. Go get the OEM version of the soundblaster live! It's in the $50 dollar range. You can get it at www.mwave.com and other places. Or you can go get the Live X-gamer which is the same exact thing, but comes with a software bundle of games. I think it is Descent 3, Thief, and NFS 4. It's about $80-90, depending on where you shop. Good luck!
  9. Ha! Not possible! Sounds like you have Vsync (or Sync every frame) enabled in q2. In 640x480 in q2 32 bit color, I get 225 frames per second with 5.14 drivers, at 800x600 I get 172, and at 1024 x 768 I get a whopping 119.5! How about that! And in q3 with everything to the max (trilinear included) @1024x768, I get 65 fps. Anybody care to topple these numbers?? Coppermine 733 Asus P3B-F GeForce DDR Prophet @89 MHz AGP PC133 Ram Cas3

Can't install new drivers in Windows 2000

People, you have to UNINSTALL the drivers if you have drivers previously installed. Windows 2K goes right to \\winnt\inf\ folder to look for drivers FIRST before anything. If it sees oem1.inf, it WILL NOT install YOUR UPGRADED drivers. Note: it (windows 2K) changes nv4_disp.inf to oem1.inf and puts in the above directory. When you want to install the 5.x version you have to get that file OUT of the \\winnt\inf folder. Otherwise it'll keep wanting to install the same version you had! I've seen this same post a 1000 times! I've never had problems installing/uninstalling the drivers. Also Note, after you install the 5.x drivers you can remove them the "easy" way using add/remove programs. Much better (and easier) then uninstalling the 3.x drivers (those you have to delete manually). Hope this solves everybody's problem with installing Detonator.
  11. I have absolutely NO idea why you are having problems like that. I have the exact same card you have. DDR Prophet. I've never had problems installing, uninstalling any of the drivers. What the heck is your procedure?

Finally got 5.13 working, here's how in case someone else do

You shouldn't have ANY problems with the 5.13 drivers with the TNT2/Ultra. Most of the problems with the new drivers are on GeForce cards, because it "unlocks" more power of the card. If anybody is having trouble with the 5.13 drivers on anything but a Geforce. Then you are doing something seriously wrong. I have an Ultra on my second pc, and put it through some rigorous testing, not one hiccup. Nothing, just rock stable. Now the GeForce, I use the 3.81 drivers, there much more stable for it.

    HELP! All Win2k gamers needed!!

In My Opinion, I believe Windows ME will eventually BECOME (a few months after it is released) Windows for Dumb People. Let's face it Windows 2000 is the OS of the future and MS knows it's much better (but didn't know the popularity it would acquire!)platform and they'll have to eventually market ME as an OS for the less experienced, so they don't lose ALL their sells to Win2k.

I got nVidia 5.13 working w/ GeForce DDR...

Have you done an extensive amount of testing? I have a GeForce DDR and 733 Coppermine and I can crash the computer in D3d mostly if I want to (by resizing the Unreal Tournament Window over and over: computer will just restart). This is running at spec 133 FSB and even with ALL the memory timings at the lowest settings 3). I've tried putting the FSB to 100 (puts the cpu at 550): I can crash it. And I've tried putting the FSB at a measely 66 MHz FSB (Cpu at 366 what a joke). All the same results. I don't think it has anything to do with the cpu, memory, motherboard. You're observation, I believe is correct. The 5.13 drivers enable more features. However, they aren't perfect. But I have found the 5.13 Win98 drivers to be pretty flawless though.

Advice required on new Motherboard Purchase

i815 will have an AGP port unlike i810 which has video built in to the motherboard. i815 will have audio built in, HOWEVER, the user will be able to disable it through the bios. i815 will be alot like i840, but FULLY support sdram..no converter cards! As with ANY hardware, before buying wait until Tom or Anand (or somebody reliable) reviews it. But this may be what Bladrunner is looking for!! I also agree with one of the other posts about waiting and buying everything at once (chipset and cpu) so you can see what is on the market at the time and what is overclocking the best (if you like to do that) or what is the best deal.

Advice required on new Motherboard Purchase

Yeah, you are like me then. I like Intel chipsets the best. But I'll have to admit, the 133/133a chipset by VIA is becoming viable solution to coppermine users. But I use the BX w/a Geforce and coppermine 733EB. Rock stable. Those i815s should be out in June/July (if you can wait that long). Also, I would trade in the PC100 memory and buy some PC133 ram. It'll give you some more bandwidth for the 133 FSB. Good luck.

    5.13 drivers...A far fetched theory...

More to the theory: I do alot of computer testing, and I've played around alot with the new 5.13 drivers. Just remember everybody, these are leaked, if you are looking for stability and no lock ups or strange colors, textures or whatever. Go back to the 3.72 drivers. I believe these drivers are for everybody to try, but not everybody to experiment with. Another thing I've noticed about the drivers is that they are very stable with my TNT2 Ultra (not one lock up glimmish or crash) but not my GeForce DDR. If I run UT and try to go out on the desktop (resize the window in the upper right hand corner) and then go back to fullscreen again (this is in D3D only btw). RESTART! Computer just restarts itself. I've tested this with overclocking, rated speed, and UNDERCLOCKING (via FSB) the CPU. All the same results. These are the first drivers I have found to do a crazy restart like that, none of the earlier versions would do this. This is one of the bugs i've found in the 5.13 drivers with my Geforce. With my Ultra, nothin. Rock stable. The 98 5.13 drivers with my Geforce? Rock stable. My conclusion: The new drivers (and possibly all the latest releases) take advantage of the extra features of the Geforce (not the TNT2 Ultra, it's probably reached it's potential). The 98 drivers show more stability, and they should. They've matured. Also, I don't believe that the drivers overclock the hardware in any shape or form.

Advice required on new Motherboard Purchase

Well, if you want to go a little cheaper route (depending on your video card of course), go get yourself an Asus P3B-f if you have a Geforce, and run that baby at 133 MHz (assuming you want a coppermine). It's the only one that I know of that can handle that 89 MHz AGP bus and higher! If you don't have a Geforce I recommend a VIA chipset, Asus P3V4X. That one supports the 1/2 diviser for the AGP bus if you run it at 133 MHz FSB. That'll put that AGP bus at the 66 spec. Which is the best option? If I wasn't picking for myself I would say the VIA chipset because it would be the 100% safest option (if there is such a thing). If I was picking for myself? BX board, it's faster, and a little more tried and true. But if you don't have a Geforce the option is simple. Also, I'd stay away from i820 motherboard, it's not worth it (performance vs. cost). if you REALLYY want an Intel chipset with the Newer HUB architecture, just wait for i815 which wil support SDRAM. And I would expect it to be as fast or faster than BX. If you still feel confused go check out www.tomshardware.com that might help you on your decision also.

    MONSTER 3D

Go download the drivers here: http://www.win2kgames.com/drivers/g_3dfx.html I don't know if you'll have direct 3d...but you should have OpenGL and Glide..Let me know how it pans out for you.
  20. I've been using Windows 2000 for a month now, and I must say it's the best OS I've used to date. I use it for everything, games, all my apps, whatever! Works like a SOB. Only thing that I'm waiting on is my Dxr3 card. Do I care? no. Am I worried? no Am I impatient? no Will drivers come out for it? YES! Hell yes! That's the ONLY thing (DVD) I use that sorry 98 for now that 2000 is on my system. ALL my games work, and with those new 5.13 Nvidia drivers for my frag-ass GeFORCE, it's as fast (if not faster) than 98. fast, FAST, F A S T!!! You hear that?! FAST! No lockups, no blue screens of death, no glitches! No nothin! The only time I've EVER had to reboot is because I installed the latest drivers for my live! and Geforce! Period! So quit overclocking the **** out of those machines and go do some research of what your system is capable of, or go do some research on what runs on the thing and what "has-been" programs don't! Good job big M, you finally came through for me with a solid, fast, stable OS! My system Intel P III 733 Asus P3B-F 256 Meg PC133 GeForce DDR (only card I know of that can handle that 133 MHz FSB/89MHz AGP Bus on a BX board, their maybe others) SbLive! Yeah I'm aware of the Hollywood Plus Beta driver, but I feel compelled to wait. Thanks.
