    Eternal quesiton: UT or Q3

tristan777, Annoying? Get a grip, get a clue. Your annoying. I own both Quake III and UT. Here's my little history with those too. Both of those games need to have better physics. I played both of them for about a month until Counter-Strike (NOT Half-life, I said CS!!) hit me. Counter-Strike (again NOT HL!), has the best physics and weapon dynamics of any game I've ever seen. Also, the kinematics in the game feels more real than any other. Those other games are just cartoons. The only thing that will keep them alive is their Counter-strike copy-cats in the MOD community for both UT and QIII.

anyone try Nvidia 7.17 drivers ?

Didn't work for me either in Win2K, they did some strange things. Even had trouble setting the resolution and color depth sometimes. Couldn't play Counter-Strike, it would just crash right after it finished loading. Are you saying they suck with just Directx 8 RC1, or with all of the betas of Directx 8? Let us know if anybody has some success with these things. My experience was horrible I went back to 6.47.

Don't waste your hard earned dollars on either one of those pieces of crap. Get yourself the real deal, the #1 online game PERIOD: Counter-strike!

Why is DirectX so slow in Win2k?

Sorry guys, I'll have to agree with DosFreak on that one. why? go run a game like X-wing Alliance in Windows 98 and Windows 2000. There's a big difference. Not sure if this is true or not but I heard it has to do with the Nvidia's drivers in 2k...heard there is a bug in the NT kernel that limits them to just PCI speeds using directx...not sure how it is with other brands of cards...I've read this from an Nvidia rep. Good news is, I heard it will start to be fixed in the 6.40 driver set and the 7.xx driver set....so look for things to start shaping up with directx...I believe M$ is putting the ball in Nvidia's court on the directx performance.

    Intel ? or AMD

sapiens26, I am so sick and tired of your dogmatic, obnoxious opinion, and your persistance in putting other people down. Well let me tell you something, tell your sister *THANKS* for letting me **** her.

    Celery 2 rocks!

Nope, your wrong again...wanna know why? Athlon-Geforce have to many incompatibility issues to call it a reliable system. So that means Athlon-Voodoo 5 vs PIII - Geforce. Actually that 600 PIII will whip all over that 800 Athlon/T-Bird whatever. Wanna know how? That PIII 600 can run at 133 Bus! It is easily an 800EB in disguise (if not more)...can't overclock an Athlon like that, so in conclusion the PIII is the better buy once again. Plus every piece of hardware is compatible with it.

    Celery 2 rocks!

OMG, You people need to get a grip, get a clue. There is NOT ONE PC faster than an INTEL Coppermine with a 440 BX Motherboard running at 133 MHz FSB. Who cares about those stupid synthetic FPU benchmarks, they are all misleading. AMD has you people brainwashed, I just buy whatever I think is the best solution at the time and the simplest. PERIOD. If that means AMD, then fine, but right now they don't have a better solution then 440 BX@133 and coppermine. All of you get a grip, get a clue.

    Celery 2 rocks!

I know what the half-life engine is. And as far as physics in Counter-Strike are concerned, it's way different then Half-Life, or any other game for that matter. That is all.

    Celery 2 rocks!

sapiens26, You are such a joker. Counter-Strike beneath your machine???....Yeah right, Half-Life engine still roXXors....That's why more people make MODS with it then ANY other engine....and as far as gaming is concerned..there is more people playing CS then any of the others COMBINED!! If that doesn't speak for itself then what the F**K does. There's not a game out there that has the physics as nicely done as CS...So nice that it is going to be commercially released in December....UT?? what a cartoon that game is, no real-world weapons, no real-world physics (not to say that every single 'physics' in CS is real-world either, but it is the best balanced)...soooooo, when you want to get a grip and get a clue you come find the SEAL...and for the rest of you that don't play CS, your missing out on the biggest Tidal wave of gaming ever.

    Celery 2 rocks!

sapiens26, HAHAHAHAHA!!! Quake III????? You want a challenge on Quake III???? That game is a POFS. It's only good for ONE thing. Real World Game Benchmarks. The REAL gamers quit playing that pathetic game a while back and started palying Counter-Strike. If you think you are ready to take on one of the best, then bring it. OH and by the way, I get 96 fps (QIII) on my MAIN machine. Genuine INTEL 733 and Geforce 2 GTS, with all the high quality stuff on you are talking about. I don't think your little T-bird can keep up unless it is over a gig.

    Celery 2 rocks!

sapien, First off you are an idiot. As far as Quake III benchmarks are concerned AMD can't keep up with Intel. On my second machine I have a 566 Celeron II @ 872 (103 bus) and I get 87 frames per second with a Geforce 2 GTS. My buddy has the same thing with an Athlon 800 and he gets 80 frames....so why don't you go look up [RwOc]DEVGRUSEAL on Beer for Breakfast 2 Counterstrike server so I can virtually rape you. Frog, You made a good buy.

    Diablo 2 final problems

Man, I don't even know why this is even an issue. I have NEVER, EVER had a problem with GeForce or its drivers in Windows 2000, and I'm currently using 5.30. If you guys want to falsely bash Nvidia, go ahead, cuz I'm over here running frame rates with "0" problems that you guys only wish your Voodoo's or Matrox's could do. Later.
  14. I'm having some problems getting Windows 2000 to run Rainbow Six. I tried the registry hack from the compatibility page and it didn't seem to work. If some one can help me I would sure appreciate it. Aliens vs. Predator Gold compatibility problems with Win2k

Yep it is Directx related....if you can find the latest build of the Directx 8 beta for Windows 2000, you'll have no trouble getting rid of those sticky keys in Aliens vs Predator. Worked like a champ for me and everyone else I know that has that problem. Cheers.

Installed a faster processor and got lower fps :(

Well thank goodness your drop in fps is in 98 and not 2K. I have no idea why. Since Quake 3 is good to go in 2K, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You didn't have any success getting that new Celery at 100 MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) or 850 MHz?

New Creative Dxr3 Win2k Beta Drivers

Well, I tried them out tonight. Some good news and some bad news. Good news is I don't have to have to install the Hollywood Plus Betas and hacks. More good news: I don't have to disable PnP in the Bios on my ASUS P3B-F to get them to work. Even more good news: movies play great! Now the bad news: after installing them and trying to put the computer in standby mode, it says something along the lines of "Computer can not go into Standby mode because of Nvidia Geforce DDR device driver." Don't know if this is Nvidia or Creative but I tend to think Creative (since it worked before installing the Dxr3 drivers and after removing the Dxr3 drivers). More bad news: D3D games take a big hit in frames/sec just like the Hollywood Plus betas...Well, it's getting a little bit better: 3 pluses and 2 minuses, but I have to have 5 PLUSES, so that makes it unacceptable for the time being.

    Soundblaster Live

I'm sorry DOS but you're wrong man. They did a newer rev of the Live about 9 months ago (I got the Live when it first came out for my older machine, and then got another one about 6 months ago for my newer machine). All the sound blaster lives come with a yellow digital out plug. And yes it works kick ass I have it hooked straight into my Cambridge Desktop Theater Dolby Digital receiver.

Major Win2k problems! !!EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!

Not true, my friend...if you got a newer Asus (CUBX) or Abit (BE6II) or Aopen motherboard, they'll have the ATA66 onboard, you won't get AGP 4x, but does it really matter? NO! With todays video cards, they have at least 32 meg on-board. Plus, with those newer motherboards they have a PCI divider of 4 so you can run those PCI devices at 33 MHz with a 133 MHz FSB. THE ONLY thing to worry about is the AGP bus, it's limited to 2/3 or 89 MHz, but with today's video cards, manufactures are building them much better and solid and can handle the higher AGP bus. Nvidia people have nothing to worry about.

    Win2k 5.22 drivers, UT

Preach, Well, I guess I'll have to "agree to disagree" on the Glide issue. You'll never convince me it's the best API (even though I do believe it is AWESOME and is easier to code for). I just can't say it's the best since it is only based on 3dfx technology, and I like 3dfx products. But (in my book) for something to be the best it needs to be solid with all video cards, and if that means OpenGL or Direct3D, then cool. I only used that unified driver once and didn't find it very solid. There are a lot better glide wrappers out there. Most people that are in the emulation scene know about them. But anyways you can go and try some out at www.ultrahle.com. Later.

    Win2k 5.22 drivers, UT

Preacher, You need to clarify some of your statements. The Pros? I consider myself a pro, been building and maintaining systems for 10 years (since I was 15!) and more I have a degree in engineering and computer science. And am now a successful IT person for a very respectable company. Enough of that, I view problems like this. If something works great, I'm not going to waste my time with another API, especially if the D3D is around 60 fps. Yeah I agree OpenGL is better and faster. But on my 733 Coppermine on BX board, there is no sense in wasting time with OpenGL if D3D is SOLID on UT (and very fast). The purpose is to have fun and play games, not spend all day trying to debug an API that it wasn't mainly designed for. I don't know about you, but I'm out to have fun. Glide as the BEST API????? C'mon, you know that is BS. First off Glide isn't the sole API in games anymore (hardly at all!!). Number 2, Glide is based on ONE brand of video cards 3dfx. Now tell me, how could the best API be based on only one brand. You would think the best API would be based on EVERY video brand. And if it is so hip, then why is 3dfx phasing it out? Also, I'll be surprised if that company is around in 3 years, their stock has gone to ****. Later.
