    IRQL_NOT_LESS_ OR_EQUAL

I once had a big e-mail discussion about this error with Gravis tech as their driver periodically causes it. They said that M$ says the error is caused by the HAL layer in the OS. Something about if a driver causes a piece of hardware to lockup or something and then keeps sending the hardware requests to do a task. Then the buffer that stores commands for the HAL fills up and can't be purged. Of course I've never been able to substantiate that explanation, but I suppose it's a place to start. Review all your current drivers looking for any sign of problems. Try removing and installing them again, etc. The only driver that causes that with my system is the Gravis joystick driver. I just have to disable it when running certain games.

Hell, that auction doesn't close for another 2 whole weeks! By then you'll have to pay more than it's worth today. And it will only take you 3 weeks from today to get it. Man, some people are just WAY too gullable!!!

    Win2k monitor detection/install?

That's a good question that I'd like to know too. I do know that the refresh rate changer program works well, but I've had mixed success with Powerstrip. Powerstrip doesn't seem to like my new Nvidia drivers at all - had to remove it. The program to manually change the refresh rate for Nvidia cards is here: http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?ztn/nvreffix.zip and powerstrip is here: http://www.entechtaiwan.com/files/pstrip.exe [This message has been edited by JediBaron (edited 01 November 2000).]

    That MS AGP4x VIA patch...

Cool, it's not just my 21 A7V's I've never tried going back to the PS/2 port with mine. The truth is since it only happens under those conditions (one more condition that I forgot to mention - you have to be wheeling in ie), I'm assuming that it's a really small timing flaw in the USB when you change to Optimal Performance. It seems to be such a small error that possibly just later releases of Intelipoint might just filter it out, or perhaps a new Via USB filter will. But the most likely candidate to fix it will no doubt be a BIOS upgrade, so till then . . . Normal it is I've never had any of my 21 A7V's lockup from the mouse in Normal mode in any OS. I have seen some obscure references to the problem possibly being caused because no PS/2 mouse is plugged in. I find this to be highly unlikely because I assume that Win9x and Win2k doubtfully use the mice in the exact same way. So I'm realitively sure that it's a hardware glitch. I've never gotten the wheel to lockup in any other app but IE, but no other app gets as much wheel action so it's hard to say. On my Win98SE systems, though, I did note that it accured a lot more often. Basically it seemed to average out to 3-4 hours of IE use (no reboots of course), yet on my Win2k machine it would only happen after like 20 or more hours of IE use. Possibly the Win2k machine just limits the glitch better (or maybe it's just a lucky fluke ). [This message has been edited by JediBaron (edited 01 November 2000).]

    That MS AGP4x VIA patch...

Mine worked too, but then I pushed my d3d really hard with the new Venom demo 1024x768-32bit and it went kuput. I had no problems at all with any OpenGL program. I also had to set mine back. As for luckups in ie, are you using a usb mouse? There is a known issue with the AGP 4x and MS Optical mice in IE on the A7V. It affects both Win9x and Win2k (ME isn't even worth mentioning, I'm just going to pretend that it doesn't exist and maybe it will go away The 9x OS took a HUGE step back with that incarnation.) Maybe that has something to do with your lockup.
  7. Sorry for posting this again, but it still seems like many people need it. This patch has only been tested on the 1004a or better BIOS, so if you don't have it you may need to get it: Here's all the download sites to get everything: Win2k/Athlon patch: http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon-duron/amd_win2k_patch.html Via 4 in 1: http://www.viatech.com/drivers/4in1424a.zip Nvidia 6.31 certified drivers: http://zoiah.m3dzone.com/files/detonator/W2k/W2k-631-WHQL.zip 1) First download the 6.31 Nvidia drivers , the VIA 4-in-1 patch, and the Win2k/Athlon patch 2) Go into your BIOS and load the BIOS defaults. 3) make sure AGP Fast Writes is "Disabled" and change performance setting to "Normal" instead of "Optimal 4) Go to the Boot section and set everything to yes and enabled (except for the ATA100 controller if you're not using it) 5) Get into Windows and uninstall The video drivers in Add/Remove Programs and reboot 6) Install the Via 4 in 1 patch and reboot 7) Install the Nvidia 6.31 certified drivers. 9) Install the Win2k/Athlon patch and reboot. DVD Player driving me insane

If you read the PowerDVD installation notes, you will see that it tells you NOT to install it with a hardware decoder installed. If you want to use the hardware decoder then install the Creative Win2k beta drivers with the registry hack and then use the Creative DVD Player. If you want to use software decoding then remove the Dxr3 card and it's drivers and software. Either case, before you go one way or the other remove every driver and piece of software and install what you want from the start again.

    Geforce MX and AGP2X

Your AGP apeture setting should always be 1/2 of your ram, 64 megs in your case. What m/b do you have? And do you have the latest BIOS installed? Is everything setup right in the BIOS settings? If your getting that error, then those are the first thing I'd look at. Secondly, do you have a sb live card? Remove the card and all it's drivers if you do. Then remove your video drivers (in add/remove) and remove your via 4in1 (run the setup again). Then reinstall the 4in1 and then the 6.31 certified drivers. Only after you verify everthing's working, try and install the live card again.

Nvidia/KT133 lockup fix on Asus A7V in Win2k

kul Yep I can honestly say that all the bugs are pretty much gone. The only real issue it seems that I see anymore with newer hardware and Win2k is that damn Live card. It seems like everyone who's got the live card is playing Russian Roulete. Some work, some don't. It's really weird and there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the Live madness. I suspect it's some major flaw with Creative's driver base, but I don't think that you'd ever get them to admit that. So I'd take a couple of precautions when upgrading with the live card. First make sure you have a backup card that you can go to if everything else fails. When installing Win2k (or 95/98/M(sh1t)E for that matter), don't install the Creative drivers untill all your other drivers & patches have been loaded. This seems to limit the effect of it to cause problems. I spent 3 months on the probs with mine, so trust me if it doesn't work, just toss it. I traded mine for a $20 generic card that I liked much better. And the SB128 Ensoniq 1373 that I have now performs lots better than my Live ever did. Plus, NO PROBLEMS! Yep, my professional advice when getting a new sound card is to save your money and buy a good, yet inexpensive card like the sb128 and put that extra cash into your speakers. Nvidia/KT133 lockup fix on Asus A7V in Win2k

Hey everyone, I have a little update to my earlier posts. M$ released a Via Win2k AGP Patch this last week. After installing it, I was able to use the Optimal Performance setting again without any games crashing. I've been running with AGP 4x for about 4 or 5 days now and everythings perfect. I also got a nice increase in d3d speed (about 30%) by going to 4x. The patch is at: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q261/6/06.asp Operating System: Windows 2000 Pro sp1 (running fully PNP w/ ACPI) Processor: AMD K7 T-Bird 800 w/ 256 Megs PC133 Motherboard: Asus K7a (1004c BIOS) w/ the newest Via 4 in 1, Promise 100 drivers b25 Hard Drive: Maxtor 1536H2 on the Promise 100 Video: Asus 6600 SGRAM w/ Asus sba bios (AGP Geforce 256,32meg - Nvidia drivers v6.31 - certified) Sound: SB 128 PCI (1373 chip w/ 5.12.01.4035 WDM drivers - certified) Modem: USR 56K PCI Network: NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (PCI 10/100 card) SCSI: PCI Advansys SCSI Host Adapter CD Burner: Smart&Friendly 4x SCSI Printer: Epson Stylus 740 (USB) Scanner: UMAX Astra 1220U (USB) Misc: Creative PC-DVD 5X drive, USB Intellimouse Optical w/ intellipoint 3.2 (ver. 3.20.0.484), Gravis Xterminator gamepad with 4.2.0.2 driver DirectX: 8.0 RC1 (4.08.00.0219)

    New VIA/Win2k M$ patch

Well the new patch seems to have fixed the crashing with the Optimal (AGP 4x) setting on my ASUS A7V motherboard. I've been running the machine for many hours now and no more crashes in games and stuff. I haven't crashed in a long time since I changed performance to Normal (AGP 2x), but it's nice to have my 4x back. D3D is running 30% faster too. Why is DirectX so slow in Win2k?

Just thought I'd ask this to see if anyone knows. It's a question that's been nagging me for some time. I just can't seem to understand why directx runs so much slower in Win2k. The problem has never affected any other graphic api's such as OpenGl or Glide so it's not something that is just because of the os being the way it is. It has to be something M$ is doing with it. My Directx runs incredibly slow compared to the same system with Win98SE (many times slower in some cases). I've tried different drivers, directx vers, etc. But nothing seems to change that horrible performance margin. I suspect that it simply has something to do with the way M$ has Directx talking to the HAL layer, but it's only a guess. Operating System: Windows 2000 Pro sp1 (running fully PNP w/ ACPI) Processor: AMD K7 T-Bird 800 w/ 256 Megs PC133 Motherboard: Asus K7a (1004c BIOS) w/ the newest Via 4 in 1, Promise 100 drivers b25 Hard Drive: Maxtor 1536H2 on the Promise 100 Video: Asus 6600 SGRAM w/ Asus sba bios (AGP Geforce 256,32meg - Nvidia drivers v6.31 - certified) Sound: SB 128 PCI (1373 chip w/ 5.12.01.4035 WDM drivers - certified) Modem: USR 56K PCI Network: NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (PCI 10/100 card) SCSI: PCI Advansys SCSI Host Adapter CD Burner: Smart&Friendly 4x SCSI Printer: Epson Stylus 740 (USB) Scanner: UMAX Astra 1220U (USB) Misc: Creative PC-DVD 5X drive, USB Intellimouse Optical w/ intellipoint 3.2 (ver. 3.20.0.484), Gravis Xterminator gamepad with 4.2.0.2 driver DirectX: 8.0 RC1 (4.08.00.0219)

Why is DirectX so slow in Win2k?

Thanks ledzeppel, that's the best explination I've seen so far . I'm glad that you go Nvidia to acknowledge that the problem does exist. And I'm really glad to see that they said that they are going to do something about it- hehe. I do have to admitt, Nvidia's service rocks. They have the best beta release system of anyone. Keep them leaked drivers a flowing

Why is DirectX so slow in Win2k?

I don't know how you could get the same numbers from Win98 and Win2k. What kind of video card and system are you using? Even using a simple video tester like Wintune shows huge perfomance gaps. Using the exact same machine and hardware Wintune will score: Win2k@1024x768: 289 Direct3D Null driver score 76 Direct3D Primary driver score Win98SE@1024x768: 284 Direct3D Null driver score 185 Direct3D Primary driver score In fact my simple Duron600 with it's wussy TNT 16meg AGP card scores: Win98SE@1024x768: 219 Direct3D Null driver score 149 Direct3D Primary driver score Which makes that lowly card 2x as fast as my Geforce in d3d!!

Need unbiased opinion on Nvida cards

Yeah, Geforce is definately the way to go. 3dfx's cards have not been able to keep up with the Geforce (especially in price ). Now the word is on the street that Nvidia might just buy up 3dfx because of the technology right suite that 3dfx just won. 3dfx's corporate value is mere peanuts compaired to Nvidia's. So pretty soon we may be down to 2 real 3d processor manufacturers, Nvidia and Ati, between which Nvidia is clearly the better.

    Unreal Tournament freezing in win2k

If you installed everything, but are getting an error in your kernal then your probably screwed. Something that you undoubtably messed with in the past has messed up your system bad. Think of anything you've tried to install and remove it all. Remove all video, sound, and agp drivers. Uninstall any video helper programs. Remove any registry tweeks. Then try the steps that I outlined above. If your still getting that bsod, your only fix may be to reinstall win2k. But this time just install the 4in1, Nvidia 6.31, and Win2k/Athlon fix before trying anything else.

    Unreal Tournament freezing in win2k

Sounds like you haven't fixed the Nvidia/KT133 problem on your system yet. That's what's causing your crashing - no doubt. Here's the fix: 1) First download the 6.31 Nvidia drivers , the VIA 4-in-1 patch, and the Win2k/Athlon patch 2) Go into your BIOS and load the BIOS defaults. That's it. If it still locks up then it is your sb live card - try a different sound card. No wake up after standby mode !!!

There's nothing you can do. If the drivers for hardware don't correctly support standby then you're screwed. The only thing you can do is disable standby support.

    Windows2000 and ACPI

If you installed Win2k before you had fully complient ACPI bios or it was shut off in the bios settings then Win2k will not install ACPI support. This is by design as the kernals are different for standard and ACPI modes, just as the kernal's also different for dual-processor mode. The best way to enable the support now is to reinstall. You an try manually changing it in the Device Manager, but I don't recommend it, if it doesn't work win2k will completely toast itself. 2940U2W and SB Live! sound problems....

Sound like a classic sb live hardware conflict. With my machine it did the old painfull to the ears screeching static whenever I used D3D and played a digital sound. I'm sorry to say that no amount of experimenting over a 4 month period could fix it once it started. Tried everything from different mb's and video cards to reinstall of win2k. Nothing ever fixed it. My theory is that some part of the sound chip grabs a motherboard resource, but doesn't tell it. Therefor the board thinks that the resource is free and gives it to another card or takes it for itself. The reason that Win98 doesn't have any problem is that the OS manually allocates this 'hidden' resource when you install the live drivers. It then forces the motherboard to not use the resource for any other card by using the OS's PnP controller. Basically, I think that every time the Win98 boots, it moves whatever the board has placed at this resource. The Win2k drivers don't seem to have that ability. I finally solved it by getting a SB128 (1373). Sorry that I don't have a solution, but I was forced to give up on it. And believe you me, I don't like to give up at all! Four months I fought that damn card Operating System: Windows 2000 Pro sp1 (running fully PNP w/ ACPI) Processor: AMD K7 T-Bird 800 w/ 256 Megs PC133 Motherboard: Asus K7a (1004c BIOS) w/ the newest Via 4 in 1, Promise 100 drivers b25 Hard Drive: Maxtor 1536H2 on the Promise 100 Video: Asus 6600 SGRAM w/ Asus sba bios (AGP Geforce 256,32meg - Nvidia drivers v6.31 - certified) Sound: SB 128 PCI (1373 chip w/ 5.12.01.4035 WDM drivers - certified) Modem: USR 56K PCI Network: NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (PCI 10/100 card) SCSI: PCI Advansys SCSI Host Adapter CD Burner: Smart&Friendly 4x SCSI Printer: Epson Stylus 740 (USB) Scanner: UMAX Astra 1220U (USB) Misc: Creative PC-DVD 5X drive, USB Intellimouse Optical w/ intellipoint 3.2 (ver. 3.20.0.484), Gravis Xterminator gamepad with 4.2.0.2 driver DirectX: 8.0 RC0 (4.08.00.0183)
