vid card overclocking prob in xp

i use nvmax. actually i post news and moderate the forum at nvmax.com as well. i dont like powerstrip, because u gotta have it running to keep the overclocking settings i believe... since it goes through hardware rather than drivers.

vid card overclocking prob in xp

grrr... this will b the 2nd time i've typed this message. power flickered and i lost it all... anyway, i've got a strange problem in winxp that happens whenever i try to play a game with my vid card overclocked AT ALL. the screen will go black and colored lines will flash accross it all over the place. this does NOT happen though when running benchies such as 3dmark, etc. also i never had this problem in winme/98 b4. i thought it might be a driver issue, so i tried switching drivers, and reinstalling current drivers, but neither worked. so im wondering if any of you have a solution, or if anyone else has this same sort of problem at least... the problem occurs if the geforce is overclocked at all really in games, but i can get it decently high in benchies no probs. (done about 245/465 stable) anyway, here's my specs: Tbird800@963MHz (107x9) Asus A7V rev. 1.02, bios 1003 modified w/ newer ATA100 bios. 512megs OCZ PC150cas2 @ 143 MHz or so 2-2-2. 30 gig WD 7200 rpm ata100 drive... i've got a 23 gig partition and the rest i left unpartitioned in case i wanna put another os on it later. Leadtek Enhanced Geforce2Pro sb live! value lucent winmodem Dlink pci nic, cant remember name. that's about it i think. o yea, i'm running xp rc2 and i've tried a few different dets. 14.40, 12.90, and 14.20 or 14.10. whichever 1 is the win2k one. cant remember. it happens with them all though. thx for any ideas... heh on a side note i was suprised i remembered my nick for this board. it's prolly been 8 months to a year since i last posted here. i havent ran win2k in a looooong time. 1 more thing. b4 anyone says i need better cooling, let me just say that i've got 4 80mm case fans. 2 on side, 1 in front, 1 in back. i've got a globalwin fa420 on my gf2pro w/ a 40mm fan on that. i've got a 40mm fan off an old 486 cooler on my northbridge, and i've got 2 60mm fans stacked on a FOP32 on my Tbird. i used arctic silver epoxy on the geforce w/ a little AS2 mixed in incase i ever wanna get it off. i used Arctic Silver II on my tbird HSF.
  3. the best tweak i've found is NVMax. if you haven't heard of it, it's a tweaking for Nvidia cards. it requires u to use the reference drivers, but these are usually the best anyway. i would highly suggest downloading it if you have an NVidia based card. it supports 9x and 2k. also stop by the forum sometime. there's lots of helpful ppl there. BSOD w/ TNT2U oc'ed more than a few MHz

i supose i prolly should reformat. hehehe... i just figured it might be ok since my old board had a VIA chipset too. o well. now i just gotta get some cds...

    BSOD w/ TNT2U oc'ed more than a few MHz

hmmm... well my card still does fine at it's default, just not faster. i'll try oc'ing again after i reformat. if it still does it, i guess i must've just hurt the card.

    BSOD w/ TNT2U oc'ed more than a few MHz

hehe. o yea. i fixed my UT problems. don't know how. it might have been DX8 or my last bios update. but i played for about an hour today in Direct 3d and it didnt crash. hmmm... last time i reformatted my computer was in april or may. so 6 or 7 months? at that time i was running on a K6-3-450. hehehe... maybe i should reformat. i'm getting some more cds tomorow so i'll be able to backup my stuff first. this ram is actually PC-100 CAS2, but right now it's running at PC133 in either 3-3-2 or 2-3-3. can't remember which. it did this in PC100 CAS2 and PC133 how i have it. i made sure not to let the HS touch anything else but the chip. it hangs over a couple of the ram chips just a bit, but it doesnt touch them. i was trying to put off reformatting because i'll probably be getting a 30 gig seagate ata100 drive. i was going to put 2k on that one, and 98 on this one since i'll just use 98 for emulators and such. i supose i could try my card in another computer i have. i dunno if it will fit though with this heatsink on it. it needs 2 free slots below it. anyway, thanks for the help. could overclocking my memory before to 210 have damaged it so that it won't overclock as far anymore?

    BSOD w/ TNT2U oc'ed more than a few MHz

i changed my ram to pc133 cas3 yesterday btw. anyway, i need more ram just to overclock my video card? grrr... might as well just buy a new freakin vid card then. hehe... i have SP1 and DX8 btw. this happened before and after i updated to DX8. but when i was overclocking my card w/ default heatsink i didn't have SP1, and i didnt get that crash.
  8. hello, well last night i changed the HSF on my tnt2u because the default fan quit working. i put a socket7 HSF off my old k6 on there in place of it. i spread thermal compound on it and put super glue on the 4 corners of the chip to attach the heatsink. the back of the card, above the core, seems cooler than it was w/ the default heatsink, so that's why i dont think this was heat related. also i didn't see any artifacts or color changes before it froze. anyway here is the BSOD i get: STOP: 0x00000041(0x00001000, 0x0000041B, 0x0000BE6, 0x00000000) also that B might be a 13, i can't read my own writing. MUST_SUCCEED_POOL_EMPTY i get this on the 64 meg texture test in 3d mark if i overclock the card more than a few MHz. the default setting is 150/183. at 155/190 it runs fine. but at 155/195 it crashes, though i used to be able to oc the memory to 200 fine w/ no crash. here's my system: thunderbird 800 on Asus A7V(latest bios) diamond viper v770 ultra(detonator 5.30, fastest for me) sb live! value netgear 10/100 nic lucent winmodem 128 megs pc-100 cas2 ram 13 gig UDMA33 WD hard drive, 7 gig win2k, the rest 98 though 98 isn't running correctly, haven't got around to reformatting it hmmm... thats about all i can think of. thanks in advance.

DMA not working in Win2K /w MVP3 Chipset

i used to have an mvp3, and i never did get udma working in 2k... i tried about everything, but i couldnt get it. i think got an Asus A7V(kt133) a tbird 800 and it worked fine w/o even reformatting. hehe

New System time.. AMD or INTEL?

i'd go w/ AMD. you shouldn't have any problems w/ AMD or VIA w/ a good KT133 board. if i were you i would probably wait for a DDR board to come out tho. i think they'll be out pretty soon...

    Total Annihilation Under Windows 2K

i had the same problem here, and i have dx7. i think it might be SB live! related.

    Building a Thunderbird

i would go with the Asus A7V. also for the HSF get a Globalwin FOP-38. nearly everything i have read says this is the best Socket-A HSF money can buy. i'm going to be getting one for myself to replace the one i have, and trust me these things put out alot of heat so u want a good HSF. Processor is really up to you. if your wanting to OC alot then obviously go with the duron, but if u want the best performance go w/ the Athlon. also, i'm not sure about the KT7, but i know that the A7V can handle a FSB speed of up to 145 MHz and maybe even higher but this is the highest setting in the bios. just something to think about. TNT2 WINDOWS BOOT PROBLEM

nvidia's drivers don't suck. they're a hell of a lot better than most other companies. for Nvidia based cards, or even their own damn cards. (ATI) but anyway, all the drivers after 5.xx are really just for geforces. they aren't going to spend anymore time up[censored] drivers for legacy hardware. it makes sense to me....

    AT Bus Clock??

i'd guess either the card isn't pushed in all the way, or the card is bad. that's really the only thing i can think of that would make it not show anything. can u hear ur hdd spin up or ram count or anything? if not i'd be worried about ur mobo...

    TNT2 WINDOWS BOOT PROBLEM

i'd use the 5.xx detonators if i was u. i've found them to be the fastest and most stable for tnt2s.... unless your running win9x, then the 2.xx drivers are faster i think...
