Time to play Devil's Advocate - Do we really need RAID in de
tristan777 replied to BladeRunner's topic in Hardware
well... i dont think it's really needed. i've also heard it's not that really that much faster unless you have more than an affordable number of drives. the raid controller was optional on my socket A mobo, and i decided not to get it. i dont think that i will be needing it until hard drives get reeeeal cheap. like dirt. -
hello... i have had some problems with my video freezing lately... it seems to do this in games and in Windows so i'm not really sure what is wrong. i can continue to hear winamp or the game sound in the background but the video is frozen and the keyboard or mouse doesnt seem to be responding, if i try pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL or if i just try hitting caps lock the light doesnt even come on... any ideas? AMD Athlon tbird 800 on Asus A7V(KT133) w/ newest bios flash Viper V770 Ultra w/ Detonator 5.32 drivers(i have tried 6.xx drivers through 6.34 and they all make my comp hang when i scroll) SB Live! value Netgear 10/100 NIC Lucent 56k winmodem 128 megs PC-100 ram 13 gig HDD(7.2 gig win2k, the rest is 98) thats about it.... My cpu temp is around 130 degrees F, and my Mobo temp is usually around 105, with the case off.

ok, i added that key. it said it would prevent hanging in some "AGP Programs such as WinBench 2000". i thought that was kinda vague so let's hope that means any program that uses AGP, not just benchmarking utils... i'll see if it improves my stability... ack! it gave me a BSOD when i restarted with that reg key. i told it to go back to last good config. all is ok now. was scary though. hmm... ok, and they fit any card?
-
alright i think this may be due to my video card. i turned my comp off, to let it cool for a little bit. and when i turned it back on, i noticed the fan on my TNT2U wasnt spinning. i tapped on it some, and got it to start spinning now, and the comp stopped freezing. i think the fan on it is dying though, as i have caught it not spinning 3 or 4 times now. i have heard of some people using 486 fans to cool their video cards. i am wondering how effective this is, and how you go about attaching it to the card, since the chip isnt the same size as far as i can tell. i have a fan off an old DX4 100 that i was thinking about using... so can anyone explain this to me or give me a link to a site that can? thanks

Athlon A7V and W2K Initial Installation Difficulties (crashy
tristan777 replied to KinetiK's topic in Hardware
hmmm... ok do u have 2 drives? or do u have 1 drive w/ 2 partitions? if you have 2 drives make sure that 1 is set to slave. not sure, but i think that may cause problems. if you have 1 drive make sure ur not installing both os's to the same partition. i have an A7V as well, but i haven't tried installing any OS on it yet. but before this i had an MVP3 w/ K6-III-450. when i installed windows, i first deleted the partition w/ fdisk. then i let win98 boot from the cd. it asked what size of partition i wanted. i told it about 5 gigs. it created it, then installed the os. after that i installed all my drivers and crap, and it was working fine. then i installed Win2k. i let it boot from the CD as well, and when it asked how much space it could have for it's partition, i let it have the rest of the drive. i made the partition NTFS. and it finished it's set up. but i had to take out all the cards except video, or else the install would hang. that's really all i can think of. like i said, i havent installed win2k straight from the A7V yet. :- -
put ur CD-ROM on a different IDE channel. i have a Asus A7V, KT133 based board. it has 2 regular UDMA 33/66 connecters and 2 ATA-100 connecters. i assume that's the way urs is? connect the ATA-100 HDD to the primary ATA-100 connecter, and connect the CD-ROM to one of the regular UDMA 33/66 connecters.
-
hmmm... i supose it might be because i have no added fans. not to mention the coolguys at A-Open thought it would be a good idea to put the power supply by the CPU... i'm hoping to get a new case soon... well if urs runs at around 85, i should be able to get my T-bird to run at around 105-110... hopefully...

holy crap, how do u guys get your temps that low? my Thunderbird runs at 131 F. is that bad? i bought the best heatsink and fan they had... it's about 70 Degrees in here, and i leave my case off. what sort of cooling do you have? i read Athlons run hotter, but i wouldnt think that much hotter... the people at the place i got it from put the heatsink and fan on there, so i dunno if they put any thermal compound on or not... it's got a sticker on it that voids the warrentee if u remove it, so i cant look at it for another couple of months...
-
how long did it take for them to send you a new one? i have one sitting around that i wanted to return since it has a "lifetime warrantee" what did u have to do? i had one quit on me too. my advice is dont use USB. it seems to screw them up royally. a couple of my friends bought them before i did, and theirs' still work fine, but i had 1 quit on me. me, the smart consumer, bought another one. it's been fine, except the wiring is bad, so it's taped to one side.

Video Card drivers wont install -- Dont wanna format!
tristan777 replied to NormanSmiley's topic in Hardware
detonator 6.18s have AGP 4x disabled on AMD boards, if that's a problem for you. i have 3.75, 5.32, 6.18, and 6.31 all on my comp. so i could send whichever ones you want to you over icq or even the dreaded email 8) . -
HP 8100 Quit working under Win2k but works under WinME
tristan777 replied to aphex187's topic in Hardware
hmmm... did u try pulling the slave drives to see if it works? my guess would be, it's the creative drive. that drive is evil incarnate. i myself had one. along with... about 5 other people i know. and they all broke. in different ways, but they broke. -
i just got an Asus A7V(KT133) and a T-bird 800 a few days ago, and it seems to be running great, but i cant figure out how to enable AGP 4x. it is set to "optimal performance" in the bios. that suposedly makes AGP 4x available. WCPUID tells me that the available modes are 1x, 2x, and 4x, and it is running in 2x. i looked through the Video properties and stuff and couldnt find it. thanks. ps. the little PC probe program that came with my board tells me my Mobo temp is 41C/105F and my CPU temp is 61C/141F. this seems aweful hot to me. is that ok? (the place i got my board from put a sticker on the heatsink to the board, and so if i take the fan off it will void the warentee...) thanks again.
-
ok, i tried the 3.75 drivers. WCPUID and Powerstrip still reported AGP 2x, and Quake3 got an error when i tried to run it(crap AGP driver maybe?) ah well i have tried 3.75, 5.32, and 6.31 drivers and still no AGP 4x. i think they were lyin to me. i dont think it is really supported by the tnt2 or somethin... i just dont get it...
-
hmmm well that site only gives the newest drivers. hmmm... shoulda kept all my old drivers i guess. hehe...

hrmmm... i dont understand. how can a Case be obsolete? as long as it is ATX, and has a decent power supply it's good right? (besides cooling, which is just dependant one what you need.) my second computer is a K6-2-400, and it's case once housed a dx4-100. it's at, so it's basically obsolete, but it took about 7 or so years. -
well i tried the 5.32 drivers. and agp 4x still doesnt work, though i did get a 10 FPS increase in Q3 demo001. so that made me pretty happy. now only if i could get 4x working. i can't find the 3.xx drivers though...
-
yea i redid the registry hack. i even went into regedit and made sure the DWORD was still there. and it is. i have the latest AGP driver. i'm gonna see if i can find the old drivers to try out on it...
-
yea. i changed the jumpers. that was the second or third thing i tried. 4x is enabled in the bios. i just flashed the newest bios last night. it didnt change anything related to AGP. i havent tried any dets before 6.18(all i tried was 6.18 and 6.32) you know where i can find the old ones? hehe. you got that right. i just want to make sure they weren't lyin to me. a higher # has to be better.... hehehe. i have the agp 4x hack too. thanks again for all the help guys. i'll look for the older drivers.
-
*sigh* i installed the 6.31 drivers and it's still running in AGP 2x. powerstrip is still saying my mobo supports 4x but my card doesnt. i even double checked the jumper settings on my card... i'm running out of ideas.
-
ok, downloading them right now... *crosses fingers*

hrmmm... i have been running an AMD chip since i have been running win2k, and i never had to reformat because of windows. i have a tnt2u as well. only time i reformatted was to dual boot 98 and 2k. i needed 98 for my emulators. i switched from a k6 to a t-bird last week, and i didnt have to format for 2000. but my 98 partition is screwed up to no end. -
here's my specs Asus A7V(KT133) Thunderbird 800 Viper v770u(TNT2U) 128 megs(PC-100) SB Live! value w/ LW3 for win2k 13 gig wd hdd Netgear 10/100 nic alright that's bout it. i have the 6.18 drivers. sigh... that was my problem... where do i get the 'leaked' 6.31s?
