NV 7.58 WHQL solved Everquest problem!

I tried the new 7.58 WHQLs and tho everything seemed to run ok with the exception that my desktop res is back to a max of 1600x1200, whereas with the earlier 6.22 WHQLs, I could get 1900x1400 (or somethin like that)....anyone else notice this, or have any workarounds to bring the latest drivers back to this level? How do you get menu fading in ME?

I know this is a bit off topic but I too own a Dell Dimension (XPS T550 in my case, one step up from Four and Twentys) and I have to say its one of the best "brand name" PCs I've ever used. I've changed out the video card, added Network cards, a new Hard Disk, TV Card, extra RAM etc and tested more software and opsys's than I can even remember all without any problems - the odd driver issue don't count as I was often testing "leaked beta" drivers so you have to expect that sorta thing. I'm not trying to start off a debate on which is better - home built or purchased PCs - I personally think it comes down to what the system is used for and how well its maintained. But while I'm here - Four And Twenty: since you have the same board as I do, do you know exactly what the limits on processor upgrades for "our" systems is? The Dell forum gives different opinions ranging from 733 to over 800 so if you happen to know I'd appreciate any insight as I think thats what I'm gonna upgrade next. Cheers..... Netscape 6.01

Mornin/Afternoon/Evenin all...(depends on your point of view really) I see that Netscape has updated to version 6.01.....anyone had a chance to try this yet? (I'm in work at the moment so I can't) Are there any major changes or does it fix some of the "issues" with the last version? Thanks for any input....... Win2k problem

Hi, I have a DELL too (XPS T550) and I too had random lockup probs with it for a while...In my case I narrowed it down to the version of NVidia video drivers I was using (games, apps and even the opsys would just lockup completely, focing me to reboot the system). I've since switched to the WHQL-certified 6.62 drivers and everything's working great since. Hope this of some use......... ------------------ My System: DELL XPS T550 (PIII @ 550 Mhz) 320MB PC-100 SDRAM DIMMs 9&12GB Maxtor IDE Hard Drives Toshiba 6x DVD-ROM Sony CRX-100E CD-RW Trust 10/100 Ethernet NIC USR 56K V90 Winmodem Hauppage WinTV Go! 5. I've tried a lot of different drivers, 3.x, 5.x, 6.x and the 7.x drivers but I have to say that the best ones I've come across so far are the 6.62 WHQL drivers - my display will now to to 1900 odd whereas previously the most I could get was 1600x1200, OpenGL-based games work without freezing AND (appear to) run faster and I havent had ANY bother since I installed them. Just my 2 cents.......hope its of some use ------------------ My System: DELL XPS T550 (PIII @ 550 Mhz) 320MB PC-100 SDRAM DIMMs 9&12GB Maxtor IDE Hard Drives Toshiba 6x DVD-ROM Sony CRX-100E CD-RW Trust 10/100 Ethernet NIC USR 56K V90 Winmodem Hauppage WinTV Go! Poll: Why do you use Win2k?

Pr-man: main advantages of NTFS is that it offers file-level security and uses hard disk space more efficently. As for why I use Win2k - what Four and Twenty said (altho you should invest in partition magic 6 man as it solves all that fdisking to resize hard disk stuff :-) Cheers, Kaiser My System: DELL XPS T550 (PIII @ 550 Mhz) 320MB PC-100 SDRAM DIMMs 9&12GB Maxtor IDE Hard Drives Toshiba 6x DVD-ROM Sony CRX-100E CD-RW Trust 10/100 Ethernet NIC Hauppage WinTV Go! Windows 2000 problem

Hi, I have a Dell XPS T550 running Win2K (with SP1) now for the last several months without any (major) hassle, BUT like you, I did at one point have major probs with the system locking up (in games, apps, the desktop etc) for no reason...I narrowed it down to Nvidia drivers for my GeForce card (if you look thru this board you'll see that your individual configuration really does affect the stability and performance of those drivers - tho I've since found that the new 6.62 WHQL drivers are the most stable I've used yet) so I'd advise uninstalling completely whatever drivers you're using now and trying those 6.62 drivers. Hope this is of use to you..... Which OS is better?

Out of the whole M$ range, Win2K Pro is definitely the best and most stable opsys I've EVER used.... ...but as we're talkin about the 9x line here, then Win98 (First Edition) would be my 2nd preference - I've tried SE (twice) but it doesnt seem to like my CD-Writer (Sony CRX-100E) and I lost several blank CDs due to unexplained lockups when I had it on the system. I used to have my system dual-booted with 98 and 2K, but I've recently realised that I almost NEVER use 98 anymore (all the apps and games I play/use regularly all work fine under 2K - especially since the 6.62 WHQL Nvidia drivers came out) so I reformatted the drive and am now running Win2K Pro in NTFS...so far so good!

    Midtown Madness 2 & Win2k

When trying to play this game under Win2k, the initial MS/Angel Studios logos come up, but the game kicks out to the desktop at the point where the loading screen that follows this gets to about 20%. The game runs OK under Win98, but I'd rather try and get it running under Win2k. I'm using the latest Nvidia Detonator 3 drivers (v6.31 - I think, I'm not at my computer now but its the ones on their site anyway). Anyone else experiencied similar problems, and if so, do you know of a fix? Midtown Madness 2 & Win2k

OK...I uninstalled the game (and deleted any remaining references/files to it), then installed it clean under Win2K as suggested and...it worked!...great...until it froze on me after a while of playing. Not the end of the world I thought...I rebooted the system and when I got back into Windows, fired it up again but now I'm right back where I started from - it'll load the MS/Angel movie, display the loading screen till it gets to 20%, then kick out to the desktop (no errors), or alternatively it brings up that (annoying after the 20th time) Word document telling me to update my drivers - which I would do if I wasn't afraid of having the same sort of probs I had with the 5.xx drivers again (I've confirmed that it is the 6.31 version of the Detonator 3 drivers that I'm using tho...I'm using these in Win98 too and the game is still working there - even after deleting and reinstalling it under win2k). If anyone has any more ideas n where to go from here I'd appreciate it...thanks again for the help so far guys Kaiser ------------------ My System: DELL Dimension XPS T550 (PIII 550Mhz) 320MB PC-100 SDRAM DIMM CL 32MB GeForce DDR CL SBLive! Midtown Madness 2 & Win2k

Thanks for the suggestions....I'll try to answer them in order: 1. Memory: Mixed brands I'm afraid - I got the extra 128MB ad 64MB chips cheap but they've been in there for months now without a problem. 2. Video Drivers: When installing the Detonator 3 drivers, I firstly completely uninstalled the old drivers, deleted any remaining files and and went back to VGA as you suggested (I had serious problems with the 5.xx drivers so I learned this one the hard way). Since I installed the Detonator 3 drivers tho I've had no problems with otyher games/software (previously it would lock up completely). 3. The way my machine is setup, Win98 resides on the C: partition with Win2k on D: Games and such live on the F: G: and H: partitions of my 2nd HD, but I'll try completely uninstalling (and deleting) the game this evening and install it again as you suggested and let you know. Midtown Madness 2 & Win2k

Thanks for the replies... :-) MoreLight: I downloaded a no-cd file from one of the MM2 websites - again, it works fine under Win98 but unfortunately its still drops out to the desktop under Win2k (SP1 is installed - forgot to mention that before). I tried letting the game redetect my video card but it either brings up a word document telling me the game didn't start correctly last time or gives the same result as before. This is strange because I can get the original Midtown Madness to work - I have to turn off the pedestrians to avoid SEVERE graphics distortions but otherwise it runs fine. Again, thanks for the suggestion...if you or anyone else can think of anything else to try I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Kaiser [This message has been edited by Kaiser (edited 23 October 2000).]

    Win2k Boot Up Screen Problem

Hi, There is a BOOT.INI file, but its hidden so you have to get around this first: Boot to a DOS prompt, change to C:\ and type: ATTRIB -h BOOT.INI ...then hit Enter. Then EDIT the file and delete one of the lines referring to Win2K...save it hide the file again (same command as above except its '+h' this time), reboot the system and you're done. Hope this helps, Kaiser

  16. Hi all, In Win2000, is it possible to configure it in such a way that a screensaver passsword is activated IMMEDIATELY after the screensaver is launched from say, a desktop shortcut or the "Test" button in the Display Properties section (so that basically it works in the same way as win9x). This might seem like a trivial thing, but it can be handy when you're listening to the radio and chatting on messengers and the boss walks by! ;-)

    take programs off startup?

You can also take them out of the 'Run', 'Run Once' sections of the Registry under: HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version and HKEY_CURRENT USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version NOTE: Backup the Registry files before doing this and be VERY careful when deleting values (I usually only remove the more obvious ones under those paths, like RealPlayer, Winamp etc) because otherwise your system may not operate correctly afterwards Hope this helps... GP3 - HELP!!!!

In order for us to help you out with this one, please provide answers to the following: 1. Your full system config 2. The exact details of any errors recieved. 3. Does the problem persit if all other running applications (eg: NortonAV, Winamp, Adaptec etc) are closed beforehand? 4. What version of the SBLive and Nvidia drivers you're using? 5. Anything else you think might be useful in resolving this. For the record tho, I've had no problems running GP3 on my Win98/Win2K system - don't even need to use the Compatibility Tool, but reply with the answers to the above and I'll see if I can help you out. Yea...the same thing has happened on my system everytime I upgrade past the 3.x Nvidia drivers...lots of people have this problem with the later 5.x and now 6.x Detonator drivers...you might wanna check out the Hardware section of this board as there's a lot about it there Cheers, Kaiser

    Sticky Keys update

I've no problems with Sticky Keys anymore since the SP1 update went onto the machine. Just verify that ALL the shortcut options are still DISABLED in the "settings" sections for this feature and it should be OK. Also try checking the two options in the "Administrative" section under the "General" tab. Regards, Kaiser [This message has been edited by Kaiser (edited 11 August 2000).]

    MSN Messenger 3.0

Hi all, Since upgrading to the latest version of MSN's Instant Messenger Service (MSNIM from here on)- v3.0. I am recieving an intermittent error that causes the program to fail. The details of this error are as follows: MSMSGS.EXE - APPLICATION ERROR The instruction at "0x76c1d888" referenced memory at "0x76c1d888". The memory could not be "read". Click on Ok to terminate the program." .....after which it closes out - however, it can be restarted immediately and will sign in as normal. This problem has been ongoing since I upgraded to this version. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling it without success and have tried "end-tasking" all other running applications (generally only Noton AV 2000, Winamp, Napster and Netscape) to no avail. Here's the strange part...I have the MSNIM software installed on a laptop I use in work and it works fine there. This laptop also has the above software running most of the time but it doesn't seem to cause the same problem. Microsoft's Online Support pages don't seem to have anything on this, so I thought I'd try posting it here - any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated. Random Survey

Hi, I have two systems at home - the first (and my main one) is dual-booted with 98 and Win2k Pro and works perfectly. The second (a rather aging Gateway) was upgraded from 98 without any problems - all hardware was detected and installed correctly and most of the existing software worked fine as well. Overall I have to say I've been EXTREMELY impressed with the stability and performance of Win2k on both systems - sure you get the odd problem with video drivers but that's the chance you take with pre-release betas. Incidentially, I installed the final version of SP1 there yesterday and everything is still working fine....this has to be, in my opinion, Microsoft's best Opsys yet. (and no, I don't work for them!) ;-)

    GP3 anyone???????????

Got GP3 there on Saturday... It installed fine (full 300MB+ install) During the video card detection it kicked out to the desktop (I have a CL GeForce card using the 3.78 drivers - had BAD experiences with the 5.x drivers!) but the game restarted fine and I was able to manually set it to use the card...still wouldn't pass the autoconfig tests tho?! As for the game itself...it sees to run fine at 1280x1024 with all the detail options set to full and the cars seem to handle better than in GP2...reminds me of the original GP on the Amiga actually...you could just pick it up and play it In summary, I think its well worth buying but you will need a fairly beefy system to get the most out of it (I just wish I'd discovered the "£15 off" voucher in the paper BEFORE I paid full price!) ;-) Later all....
