Does anyone know how to log when a certain user logs in? Thanks all
-
Alright, this has probably been covered before, but I don't know what key word to search for (or just to lazy to do it). But I am upgrading my processor/motherboard from a PIII 505 (Aopen motherboard) to an Athlon 1.06 ghz (266 FSB) Athlon with MSI motherboard. For win2k (or any other OS for that matter), due I have to format/reload the OS since I am switching processor/motherboards or will win2k automatically pick up the detection and adjust accordingly. I am assuming win2k will adjust accordingly (but just making sure) ... if it does, would I still benefit from improved speed if I just format and reload or am I just smoking crack? Thanks

OK, somehow I screwed up with my services. Now, Win 2k is acting screwy ... I enabled Net logon and logical disk manager to start up automatically. When I reboot, I can't enable/disable anything in the services. In addition, those two services are stuck in limbo. net logon stopping while log disk manager says starting. Again, I can't start/stop any services (nor do many other things within windows). How do I correct this problem? Or even, how do I start windows to be able to disable services before starting 'em? I know there is a way, I did it before, but I forget how. Can anyone help? Thansk, Napalm

Ok, I have seen countless messages about people having the same proble I am having (sounds cuts off after heavy CPU usage). I don't konw if this has anything to do w/ the via chipset (AMD 1 GHZ, via KT 133a ...) but I just want a fix. I have downloaded/installed the last beta drivers available for an aureal card (specificall mx 300). But the sound still cuts off no matter what application I play the music from. I even tried changing the output (DirectSound ...) but that still doesn't work. Any help would be grealtly appreciated. My system: AMD 1GHZ MSI K7-T turbo - R (KT 133a) mx 300 (aureal chip) ATI Rage fury Pro anything else? Thanks,

Hey, which version of XP do u have? How do u like it (i.e. is it worth the move from win2000)? How about all that annoying eye candy stuff?
-
I tried that option too (long ago), but it still didn't work. I did find a fix (kinda). It is a hack I found posted on anandtech's forum. Anyway, it said (using wpcre12a program) to set register 40 (after choosing audio) from 80 to ff. And it worked. I don't see any bad effects from it either (3-D demo still works fine). So all is good. Thanks all for your help

SOrry, but I still don't have a clue what your talking about. Under the 'other' section, there is only a 686b fix (but that is ONLY for Soundblaster systems) and there is AC '97 drivers available. None of them apply to my mx300 card or to the PCI latency patch you are talking about ????
-
>try the PCI latency patch at www.viahardware.com also look for the latest mobo BIOS because a lot of manufacturers are trying to fix the problem < What PCI latency patch are you talking about. Only patches I see on viahardware are 4 in 1 drivers (which I have all updated), the individual drivers in the 4 in 1, the 686b patch (but that only takes effect if I have SB card ... which I don't) and the AC97 patches (which shouldn't effect me since I don't use the onboard sound).... so, please explain what you are referring to. ... but I will try those bios settings to see if they work

doh ... that's what I thought ... I must have screwed up somewhere (I knew I should have read those warning messages).

and i thought i was the only one who felt that about linux (love/hate) but my real question is how do i tell if sp2 is installed. i think i installed it right ...but it is no where in system info)
-
I don't know the exact reason, but ... my guess is a) this site (www.ntcompatible.com) is more popular then the other site (or at least the forums) or 2) Win2k is way more powerful, way more features to get to know and take care of. Therefore, many people who have moved to win2k from win9x (like me) don't know how to use some of the new stuff (or stuff originaly in NT 4)

I need suggestions on a good/decent voice regonitoin program to use with win2k. What should I look in to? (Dragon Soft, IBM ...?) Thanks,

My question is: how do I get the DOS prompt in win2k working like it does in win9x? I know wink2k's DOS prompt isn't like win9x, but I should still not be having the problems I am having. For instance, I cannot change to directories the way they are listed. For example, if I want to change to Program Files I have to guess to what it looks like under the 'real' DOS prompt (i.e. the first 6 letters and then '~1'). So to change to Program Files, I have to type in 'cd progra~1'. In addition, whenever I want to run a standard command (i.e. ping), win 2k comes back with an error saying it cannot reconize the command (or something like that). In order to run commands like that, I have to switch to d:\winnt\system32 and run the command. Why is this happening? I mean, the path for commands seems to be right (I didn't change it and it says %System32 among other things). Could it be because I don't have win2k installed under my C-Drive (it's under my D-Drive)??? and finally, how do I enable the doskey so I can execute a command I executed earlier? I don't know if any of these problems have anything in common, but any help on any of these problems would be appreciated. My system specs: Win2k Professional (SP 1) PIII 500 (OC) 256 mb RAM Diamond mx300 Rage128 Pro Is anything else needed? Thanks,

wow, 'cmd' works like a charm. I guess win2k's version of the 'command' program is a little broken. I wonder why 'cmd' and 'command' are 2 different programs (or at least 2 different options passed). Either way, using 'cmd' solves ALL problems. Just remember that for the future. Thanks again for the help ... Alec, thanks for the work around. I think I will do a little 'registry tweakn' my variables. BTW when using the command program putting quotes around a name gives an error (why, I don't know) Thanks,

I had that problem before. I forget how I resolved it, but one thing I tried (don't remember if it worked or not) was to log in using the same username and password as your win2k machine, in win 98. So instead of bypassing the annoying password when you boot up, type in the username and password that coresponds to your win2k machine.

You know how to include the service pack in win 2k installation? Please share ... I seem to be the only one who doesn't know Thanks, Charles L.

Ok, I screwed up. I was messing around with Win2k services to see which ones I can turn off. So I stopped and disabled a few (specifically Remote Procedure, Routing and Remote access, System Event Notification and Task Scheduler). Now I can't do stupid actions like drag an icon, open up add/remove programs or even click on a link on a web page that opens up another page (or even copy/paste at all). I don't know which service screwed this up. Worst, I can't even enable these or any other services anymore. Every time I try and open up properties, nothing happens. ... Although Win2k 'thinks' the properties is open since it cries to close all property windows when I try and close computer management. Can anyone help? Is there a way to manually enable these services (i.e. through registry)? Help

Help!! I broke Win2K services ... now what?
Napalm replied to Napalm's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Wow, i thought i was the only one to do something like that ... i don't feel so bad now. But all is working ... Thanks all -
Ok, I just finished installing windows 2000 (after installing linux first). However, does anyone know how to change drive letters under win2k? For some odd reason, it picks up my zip drive first, then the CD-ROM, then my Hard drive. So, my hard drive's letter is E instead of C. So can anyone help? Thanks,
-
Just one linux partition and the swap file. Thanks for the help ... although I just reformated (and partitioned) my HD. After installing win 2k first, then Linux (I installed linux first then win 2k), Win 2k reconizes it as 'c' drive ... go figure. Thanks,
-
None, go for it ... it's a whole different world with 2 CPU's. Oh yea, don't expect it to be much faster than a single 700 mhz ... it will only help out with programs that take advantage of it (Quake 3, Photoshope ...)

First of all: what kind of problem are you having. Some general help here: Try uninstalling the video card drivers, then clearing out all the drivers (like *.ini that relate to your video)? Then Reboot and when win2000 asks you for your card, point it to where your downloaded drivers are at?

I Know this is a Win 2000 site, but Win me is like Win 2000.... Ok it is far from it, but it is made by the same company. All I ask is for a little response if you seem to have the same problem ... First of all .... I gotta congratulate MS on how stable Win Me is (when compared to Win 98/95). Anyway, Win Me seems like a savior to me. It is compatible with most (not Norton Internet Security) programs and it is almost as stable as 2000. The problem: After having Win Me installed on 2 of my compters for well over 2 months, I am having random problems develop. I don't know if it is my computers configurations, but I would like to know if anyone else has had wierd problems. At first, I thought it was just something my brother did on his computer to screw stuff up, but he denies it everytime. Then I get problems too (and I KNOW what I am doing). ... What kind of problems? Nothing that seems to go together just Random stuff like: - Once, when Win Me was booting up on one of my computers, Explorer would crash (even though no changes had been made at all from the previous week) - Then after working for a while (ever since it was installed with the OS), any music player (Windows Media player, RioPort ...) would crash upon opening. - I cannot burn any CD's under windows ME using any software after it was working before (again, no changes had been made to the computer). - One of my computers has a hard drive split into multiple partions (c, d, e, and f). Windows Me would NOT let me defrag/ScanDisk the C drive (the drive it is installed on) all of a sudden. It worked before and quit all of a sudden. Different applications were tried (the default Defrag/Scandisk and Norton's and Disk keeper). - Finally, all of a sudden, Win ME starting acting flaky. As in it would freeze every now and then and it would perform much slower than before. However, after trying different solutions for each of the mentioned problems (including System Restore which never cured anything) all of these problems were solved by running the setup program for Win me again (without doing a fresh format and reinstall). This is a minor problem, however it is not a good sign to have to reinstall the OS every now and then on top of it. Again, I don't know if it is me (since it happened on 2 seperate computers with different configurations)or Win Me. Both computers are rarely new (built within the last year). .... Please e-mail me with any comments @: clockhar@yahoo.com Again, I know what I am doing (majoring in Computer engineer with hopes of designing computer processors) so please don't respond with any unappropriate comments. Thanks, clockhar@yahoo.com

Which is fastest, NTFS or FAT32?
Napalm replied to Turbo Grunkamoj's topic in Customization & Tweaking
ok, ok, i have heard all the bickering between NTFS and FAT32. Right now I have Win 2k installed on a FAT32 partition (13 gb). How do I convert that partition to NTFS without formatting this drive? (kinda like the conversion in '98 from FAT to FAT32)? ------------------ - Napalm -
Hey, Is there a way to run defrag from 'schedule tasks'? Not just to turn the program on, but to run it (i.e. at 5 in the morning, my computer defrags one of my partitions and then another) without my intervention? Is there a way? Otherwise, what is the whole point of 'scheduled tasks'? ------------------ - Napalm
