    Radeon 8500 Question

If you buy a genuine ATI card, the only difference is the clock speed. Also the 8500 LE from ATI doesn't have any sort of DVI connector. I have an 8500LE from ATI and the DVI is not present. You can pretty much overclock the 8500LE to 8500 speeds, without too much hassle, consult Rage3D.com forums for more information. Cards from other companies like Hercules, Gigabyte, and Sapphire, have speeds which are usually lower than ATI's and may have different features. The same holds true for 8500LE/8500 OEM boards.

UT 2003 feels like Quake 3.....I think NOT!

    Which video card

If you wait for GeForce FX, the price of current products will drop. So you may wanna wait until GeForce FX comes out if you are interested in either the 9700 Pro or Ti4600. There will always be something new coming out, but your Athlon XP 1600+ is still a decent processor. I think either the Ti4600/9700 Pro would be a good choice.

The original UT is still a good game and I like it, especially with bot play. UT2003 I don't like, it just doesn't feel the same as UT and it doesn't feel like Quake3. In my opinion I like UT over UT 2003, but Quake3 is still the best.

need for speed 3 : hot persuit doesn't run on XP

Take the d3da.dll file from NFS High Stakes and overwrite the one in NFS3. See if that works.

    Medal of Honor and Cheapness

Anyone think Medal of Honor is cheap at times. Sometimes levels seem impossible to complete and you have to get lucky to survive with your 100 health. I was playing Spearhead and the part with the supply truck in the second mission is REALLY hard. Got 1 or 2 tanks shooting me, a sloppy driver, and about 5 guys on the ground machine gunning me and troops up on high rises use automatic guns on me. Yeah....

    Are Win2k Service packs essential?

There are new drivers for SB Live cards, that work well on Windows 2000 and XP. They really fix alot of issues, perhaps you should give them a whirl.

need for speed 3 : hot persuit doesn't run on XP

Does the game install fine or are you having a problem during program execution? Just give me a bit more information. What latest Radeon drivers are you using? 2.5 or 3.0?

    Are Win2k Service packs essential?

I always thought of service packs as only being necessary if you needed the fixes that are included in them. It seems like your system doesn't need any sort of fixes. However, I can see the bind you are in with the need for ACT 2.6. Maybe someone here on the forum knows a workaround for it so it will work on pre-SP3. Or perhaps you can snag an older copy of the kit.

Windows NT/2000/XP Does it work OK with your PC

I got no problem with Windows XP, I just don't use it primarily because I like how fast Windows 2000 runs on my lower end machine. A 750MHz, 512 MB RAM machine. Windows XP runs well enough, but I find that some games run a tad slower, and I found the stability to be a notch below Windows 2000. After a few service packs I am sure Windows XP will be fine.

    Happy Holidays!!

Boxing Day could be a Canadian holiday. But as a Canadian myself we think of Boxing day as the day to return our "BOXED" Christmas gifts, and get other things. Some really good deals on boxing day, most stores are open, however, it is recognized as a government holiday here.

Need for speed 2 not working with Logitech FF system ?

If you are using a w.a.r.e.z. copy of NFS2, you really can't expect much. Go buy it, you should find EA Classics at any game store for real cheap.

Yeah backup NFS CD-ROMs don't usually work under Windows 2000 and XP, it has something to do with CD protection and how Windows 2000 and XP cannot read the backup disc as it would for the normal disc. Use your original NFS CD-ROM, if you have one.

    shogo on win XP

Yeah upgrade to a nice set of Detonators and you should be fine. The game is fully compatible with Windows XP, as is Blood 2.

    Medal of Honor and Cheapness

I think Medal of Honor's use of the Quake 3 engine is a good choice, but the programming behind it seems poor. For example the game runs quite slowly on my PC, where as other Quake 3 engine games run much better. I can Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Jedi Outcast, SOF2, and Alice all at either 800x600 or 1024x768 with all details maxed out. No AA or AF. But with MOHAA, I can't even have it run very smoothly at 640x480 with 32-bit color, and medium details. It may have alot of good features but the team that developed it certainly has less expertise with the Q3 engine than the other folks did. But then again Rogue, Raven, and Gray Matter, all made other games off an id Software engine....
  19. I would say it is separate reason being is that I used to own an Abit KA7-100 motherboard, that was based on the VIA KX133. The VIA KX133 only supported UDMA/66 but the Highpoint 370 controller supports UDMA/100. Therefore you would need 2 different circuits right? Also, when you install the OS, the OS detects it as a SCSI/RAID device thus leaving me with the conclusion that it is like an onboard LAN or onboard sound, it is a separate PCI device, just not in a PCI slot.

    Which harddrive should i buy???

Just a comment on Maxtor's RMA process. Maxtor is quite good at it, I had my 20GB Maxtor DiamondMax conk out on me, and I was given it back in about 7 weeks which is decent I guess. The drive is working perfectly now still, so I am happy.

    Medal of Honor and Cheapness

Yeah I kinda said that wrong, I meant with only 100 health and never getting anymore health its tough to beat. I finally did manage to beat that jeep level. I had 1 health left when I finished it. It was pure luck too. To do it again though........ The snipers in the first game are beyond cheap. Sniper town is one tough level. Best way is take out 1 sniper and then save, and repeat.

For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!

Quote: Quote: Wasn't Microsoft's Fury3 based off of Terminal Velocity too? pmistry no Fury3 is Terminal Velocity but HellBender was remake of Terminal Velocity or aka Fury3. Ahh that clears that up, thanks. To DosFreak, I didn't even know that the BUILD source was out, however, the fact that you mentioned that some parts of the engine were programmed by others, explains why source ports haven't evolved for those games.

WinXP very picky with DMA support for IDE DVD-ROM drives

Yeah, same here, Windows 2000 is pretty good at DMA support.

For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!

Recently 3D Realm's released the source code to Rise of the Triad. While I wasn't big fan of this game, the source is out and I am sure in time ports for OpenGL/Direct3D/Win32/Linux and Mac will come along. You can check it out at: www.3drealms.com Now if only 3D Realm's would release the source for the BUILD engine, then it would be easier for fans to make GL ports of Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Redneck Rampage.
