    Modem problem :(

Remember Packard Bell? Their computers were pretty crappy as well, especially the monitors (eye inducing pain here, even with high refresh rates).

    AvP2 flickers like mad

Have you tried enabling the V-Sync? Try Bilinear filtering, disable aniosoptropic, and FSAA for the time being. Try to run in some conservative modes like 640x480 and disable all special effects in to possibly pin point the problem. For example, disable props, detail textures, run in 16-bit color, etc, and then add them in as you go.

    Carmack speaks on Doom Leak

Quote: Quake 2 was, shoot some dudes, find door, doors locked, shoot some more, find key, go back to door, open door and repeat I did like it multiplayer though, really enjoyed that. Yeah some people like a different change of pace. Games are games, each one tries to be different, if every game was like Deus Ex (amazing game) or like Half-Life (alot of people liked it, I hated it) then games would just plain suck.
  6. Anyone try the Mafia demo for the PC yet?
  7. By looking at the XP database I couldn't muster up a fix for NFS High Stakes and putting it into the 2000 database, I couldn't copy all the lines for the program compatibilility since some of the lines involve non-exe files and matching files. Is there some unformal way of doing this? Can you extract a fix out of XP and dump into 2K?

    Carmack speaks on Doom Leak

Duke Nukem was the biggest pile of crap ever to come out for the PC. What a load of crap, complete and utter crap. I am just so pissed at 3D Realms, they are a bunch of worthless idiots who simply can't finish a game because of their inflated egos. Anybody wanna take bets on when Duke Nukem Forever will come out? Frankly I couldn't care less when that game will come, they have pretty much alienated their fan base because of their stupid release date slogan "When its done." I never thought id games were the best, but they are simply not the worst. The old Doom series was great. Even though Doom2 didn't jump over Doom in terms of new features, you cannot beat the game's longevity. They did some great with Raven on making Heretic and Hexen. Both games were landmark PC titles, Heretic finally took the FPS player off the ground (flying) and gave an inventory system to carry items. Hexen was the first game to introduce RPG elements and HUB style (go back and forth between levels) gameplay. Quake finally brought multiplayer gaming to the Internet, Quake 2 gave rise to OpenGL, and in fact Quake 2 was not as bad as most people think it is, I still find it to be a well designed single player game. Simple and effective. Quake 3 is a great deathmatching game. If you don't like DM then play something else. Quake 3 set out to be a great DM game and that is what it accomplished. Q3 is simply better than UT because I believe Q3 requires more skill since it has greater weapon balance. UT is just full of spam weapons. Their work on Return To Castle Wolfenstein was good, and the game is quite the memorable experience. I believe Doom 3 will be good. When you look around the web people still make Quake/Quake2/Quake3/Doom/Doom2 levels and mods. People still play these games online everyday. Look at all the work going into making these games better, look at the Doomsday Engine project here, http://www.doomsdayhq.com or the Quake 2 Evolved project here, http://www.planetquake.com/blur or the Tenebrae Quake update here http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/ If so many people still work on projects for these games, then obviously id did something right. Compared to other games, UT's online players are decreasing faster than Q3's. No one hardly plays Unreal online anymore and projects for it are less than even Doom. UT2003 has received lukewarm reception. No Ones Lives Forever 2 is amazing but will people still be talking much about 2 years from now? If Duke Nukem 3D was so good, what ever happened to that GL Duke port? How come a Win32 port of the game never came out?

    What is Bluetooth technology?

What is Bluetooth technology? From what I have read it is wireless technolgoy, but what purpose does it serve to aim for PCs? Instead of searching the web, I'd rather ask you guys.

    What is Bluetooth technology?

Quote: The driving idea behind Bluetooth is to eliminate the clutter of wires at the back of a PC-user's desk. Thanks for info Andy. Yeah just yesterday I looked back there and yeah its gotten pretty tangled with all these external USB devices. USB Printer, USB Lan, Wire into PCI Lan, Modem line, Phone line, 2 joysticks, 4 speaker wires, mouse, keyboard, power plug, power plug for printer, power plug for cable modem, line out of cable modem, network wire out of cable modem = a cluttered pack of snakes. Hmmm, Hercules just released a 7.1 sound card, now the amount of speaker wires coming out of that thing just scares me.

Best ATI Drivers (Version I mean)

Rage3D just reported some new beta drivers for Radeon, you might wanna try those. There are also these Omega drivers, http://www.omegacorner.com/ you might wanna try, but I doubt they would be better than OFFICIAL ones from ATI.

MS to limit where Office 11 can go

DOSFreak makes a valid point, looking on some of my game CD's they say something to the effect of >>>> Windows 95 OSR2/98/98SE/ME/NT 4.0 (SP3)/2000 We can see the SP3 label attached to NT quite easily.

MS to limit where Office 11 can go

Quote: Funny thing is, this doesn't just apply to Office. It'll eventually spread to stuff like IE and eventually DirectX. The latter is going to be a clincher for a lot of people since not many gamers can live without the latest version of DirectX for very long and when games start being released that require a version of DirectX that refuses to install on anything less than 2000/XP they're going to have little choice but to upgrade. This has already happened. I am 100% confident that DirectX 9.0 will be the last version of DirectX to work on Windows 98/98SE/ME. Microsoft doesn't even accept WHQL testing for drivers on Windows 98 and NT4.0 anymore, so ATI won't release official Radeon drivers for 98 users anymore. Although they do say that the ME drivers are perfectly functional, they remain unsupported. DirectX 8.0 was last for Windows 95. IE 7.0 or whatever bullshit, MSN Explorer version it becomes, won't work at all for the 9x OSes or NT 4.0, I am positive on this. Windows Media Player 8 doesn't even install on Windows 95 or NT4.0. It's just the way MS forces people to move up in the OS pecking order. Sometimes this is good, sometimes it is bad.
  18. How do I create a bootable Windows 98 CD-ROM, that will boot Windows 98 setup from the CD, after I select the option in my BIOS?

    How do I create a bootable Windows 98 CD-ROM?

Yep works both ways. 98 SE boot disk is more functional.

MS to limit where Office 11 can go

MS is quite tactful. There are some folks out there who refuse to move past Windows 98. Like my friend, but then again his system is fast and stable, why mess with it? Like I care what Office 11 has to offer, I have used Office 97, 2000, and XP. For ordinary uses there is no need to upgrade.

    How do I create a bootable Windows 98 CD-ROM?

Hey sweet, it worked, thanks. I am assuming that this could also work for Millennium? I am gonna try it now and burn it to a CD-RW.

[help] Your fav Hardware Review sites...??

Quote: THG is full of BS. His site presents opinions as facts. Anand is decent, but success has gone to his head. They are 2 sites I pretty much avoid anymore. Tom Pabst and his cohorts are morons, plain and simple. They think they know more than they really do. I agree, THG used to be a pretty good resource, but now they are just plain moronic. The same with AnandTech, back when he was still getting his start the site was informative and very reliable but now...... I like Sharky Extreme, FiringSquad, HardOCP, PCStats, GotApex, and Hot Hardware. If you want to search for reviews this site has tons of them indexed: http://www.8dimensional.com/
  23. I can't stand EA and their lack luster support for games. Even today they refuse to acknowlege Windows 2000 as an alternative OS. Of all the games out there, EA games suck at running under Windows 2000. Just look at NFS: High Stakes, and for me as well NFS: Porsche Unleashed. Can someone explain to me how NFS: PU can work by deleting 1 file??????????! What the hell kind of programmin is this?!!! Look at other games like the NHL or NBA Live franchises, man they all were too picky to run under Windows 2000. It is always up to us to get them to work. Now I can understand older games not getting Windows 2000 recognition, but what about new games and new OSes? I don't think EA can ignore the upcoming release of Windows XP, but I am sure they will be arrogant to help users get their old games to work on it, earlier builds of XP couldn't run NFS games properly at all. EA will probably support XP but simply because they have to. At least companies like Raven/id/Activision/Epic/GOD have Windows 2000 support and at least upcoming games like Red Faction, while they state no support is given to Windows 2000 [fair enough], but at least they don't FUC$KING patch up the EXE file so that NT is completely left out! EA go to hell! To anyone who is an EA lover, I had to get this out. I am sorry.
