Using the d3da.dll from NFS PU with High Stakes makes it run a lot better with GeForce and Radeon graphic cards.

Hey DosFreak, I was browsing a site called Vogons, http://vogons.zetafleet.com and I noticed that the forums had some talk about DOS extenders. Do you know of a way to get a Borland DPMI program to work under Windows NT? There is this old Doom editing utility called DCK (Doom Construction Kit), http://www.3ddownloads.com/?file_id=7844 which will only run under DOS and if you try to execute it under Win32 it says "This DPMI module cannot run under Win32." Any ideas on this?
-
DO you see any DOS4GW/DPMI messages when you start the program? > Nope Is there any DPMI/DOS4GW executables in the program directory? The only executables are DCK32.EXE and 32rtm.exe, I believe 32rtm.exe COULD be some sort of DPMI module. Try downloading the program and see for yourself how stubborn it is under Win32. Whats frustrating is that this isn't even a DOS game.

make sure you don't have the timedemo enabled. I know in Quake engine games typing timedemo 1 in the console will cause the game to calculate frame rates, when not running a demo the game will run like the way you mentioned.

You can also download the Windows 98 Service Pack along with other updates here: http://download.com.com/3000-2098-911823.html?tag=lst-0-3

NFSHS, less than 1mb of space, qfixapp.exe....PLEASE HELP!
pmistry replied to BAHAMUTI's topic in Games
I warned you, last time I messed with a working NFSHS under 2000 with Qfixapp I screwed it up completely. You'll have to just try over again, uninstall and reinstall. As for the EmulateGeDiskFreeSpace I told you to check it off as in make sure it is checked, not uncheck it. I guess the wording is a bit off on that one. But still if you tried both ways and its still screwed up..... Last night I tried installing NFS HS under Windows XP Pro SP1 and it installs and runs fine without any sort of patching or meddling. So I don't understand what is wrong with your XP install, check your compatibility database (run compatibility administration tool) and see if High Stakes isn't disabled. Of all the games NFS High Stakes is the worst game to get running under 2000, though XP runs for most people. Its just a pain, I am so happy that NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 is coming soon! Fully 2000 and XP compatible. -
My friend picked up a SiS 735 based board for his new Athlon XP system, rock solid stable thus far.

NFSHS, less than 1mb of space, qfixapp.exe....PLEASE HELP!
pmistry replied to BAHAMUTI's topic in Games
I'm sorry, I thought you were trying this under Windows 2000, because for me NFS HS works completely fine under Windows XP. Qfixapp is in the "\Program Files\Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit\applications" folder, run it and under fixes look for EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace check it off for nfshs and run the program. If you wish to keep the settings just click the "advanced" button and click "create fix support". -

It's a good thing you got that game to work, whenever I got the game to work under 2000, I had the exact same error too. However, when I attempted to correct the error with Qfixapp, the game no longer loaded for me saying my NFSHS files were corrupt. You should get the latest Application Compatbility Toolkit to get the newer Qfixapp. -
Could somebody tell me how to do this again? I forgot.

Both VMWare and Virtual PC give this message: 32rtm error, could not initialize DPMI32VM.OVL I tried this under a MS-DOS 6.22 Virtual PC on both PCs. Also modifying the autoexec.nt and config.net yields the same result, this module cannot run under Win32.

Hmmm, if you have NFS High Stakes or NFS Porsche Unleashed you can use those d3da.dll files inside NFS 3, should give you better performance and higher resolutions too. Download this file, if you don't have the games, its the DX7 D3DA.DLL from NFS Porsche Unleashed: http://www.geocities.com/atimobility/files/hsfix.zip

NFS 3 with Direct3D doesn't support resolutions above 800x600 by default. In order to get higher resolutions with Direct3D you have to trick it. Here's how: in your NFS 3 folder, rename your voodoo2a.dll file to voodoo2a.bak, next create a copy of the d3da.dll and then rename it to voodoo2a.dll. Now modify your NFS 3 shortcut so it looks like C:\Nfs3\Nfs3.exe -voodoo2 Just substitute the correct drive and folder for your NFS 3 install. You should have higher resolutions now. You will probably only get 1024x768 and 1152x864, I never got the 1280 modes.

Ok I sent it, give it a try, it worked on Windows 2000 for me.

I may be able to extract those from my old Windows for Workgroups 3.1 disk set, I'll report back.

I wonder if AMD would get more support from MS if they released chipsets more often? AMD usually releases the first chipset for the new processor and then just forgets about and lets technology slip past, instead relying on VIA or SiS to pick up the slack.

Yeah I'll try VMWARE too, first thing is I need to get my 2000 Install up and running first, I am reorganizing my PC.

My Windows 98 SE install likes to crash at the most weirdest times. One time it was in Internet Explorer, no pages would load after awhile and then a blue screen popped up and then I hit a key to go back to Windows only to see my monitor wouldn't display anything, so I just hit the reset button. I remember in Windows ME, I would try to load a DOS Box and get the message, not enough memory, I knew then that Windows ME was no good.

#2! What's the reasoning behind the split?

Now What's The Better Choice, W2K SP3 or WXP SP1?

Is there anyway to make Windows XP Pro run like Windows XP Home? What I mean is to load only the default services with XP Home and not the extra ones with Pro? -
Thanks for link Alec, I'll give it a thorough read and report back.

I tried Connectix VPC awhile back but upon execution of the program, (DCK32) VPC either locks up or acts funny and then eventually craps out, strange program I tell you. The error does occur in both Windows 9x DOS Box, (tried under 95B, 98, 98SE, and ME) and Winnt Command Prompt (2000 and XP). It will work in 9x Restart in DOS Mode or if I select Command Prompt from the 9x menu. It will also work with the Windows ME boot disk. I'll see if I can get ahold of the author.

The DPMI is in the EXE I believe, when I try to run DCK32.EXE its says that this DPMI module cannot run under Win32. There is also another file in the directory called 32rtm.exe but I don't know what that does. I tried setting the PIF properties and selected prevent MS-DOS based programs from detecting Windows, but that didn't work, I am trying this under 98. Under 2000 I get the same error.

This page http://www.vortexofsound.com has some good sound card info, also the support forums on http://www.3dsoundsurge.com are good as well.
