    XP SP2 vs DirectX

So you are saying you have Windows XP working with DX 8.1 and are trying to get 9.0c working?
  2. Okay Okay, hang on a second here....just let me share my experiences on this. I bought a Western Digital 120GB SATA drive and hooked it up to my Intel 865 chipset motherboard (Abit IS7). When I first loaded up Windows it detected the drive as an IDE disk running at Ultra DMA 5/ATA-100 speeds? Why? Simply because in the BIOS I had the SATA set to IDE mode. If you install the SATA disk and SATA is running in IDE legacy mode, it will function like an IDE disk and cap off at ATA-100. If you set the option to "RAID" in the BIOS, EVEN if you aren't using RAID, the drive will function in SATA mode, and top off at 150 MB/s. However, if you choose this way, you need the disk supplied by your motherboard manufacturer, which if you don't you should be able to find at their website. This is the only way you can install Windows XP on the SATA disk via the F6 method.

    XP SP2 vs DirectX

Have you tried downloading and installing the full DirectX redistributable? Or perhaps get a DirettX cleaning tool to revert back to a previous DirectX version and then upgrade to 9.0c. For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!

That Eye Candy Mod for UT is unbelievable. Load up the CTF-FacingWorlds map and look at the Earth, with Eye Candy the detail is exceptional.
  6. The temporary internet files folder really pisses me off, how does it work? I moved the folder from its default location and on to my spare drive, so its D:\Temporary Internet Files. When I clean the folder out using Internet Options, it works fine, but when I check it in Explorer, the cookies are still there which is fine since I didn't click delete cookies and there are no other files showing. But when I right click the folder it says 12 megs are being used and I have show hidden files on and show protected OS files on as well. So what is going on there? I am asking since Norton caught a virus but couldn't delete it since it was in the Temporary Internet Files folder, under a long path name, I can't seem to dig it out myself either, unless I type it in a command prompt or something.

For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!

I hope one day Epic will release some source code for the original Unreal engine or maybe they have...I am not sure but here are some interesting patches and drivers I have found for the Unreal Engine. Unreal 1 and Return To Na Pali: http://www.oldunreal.com/ This website has guides for getting the S3TC textures working on modern cards that virtually all support DXTC texture formats. It also has an ehanced OpenGL driver for Unreal. Unreal Tournament: http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/ This website is the homepage for the development of an enhanced OpenGL driver for Unreal Tournament. UT runs very nicely with this driver, and it has improved visual quality. As a bonus the latest driver release supports Deus Ex! Eye Candy Project for UT/UT2003 and more: http://home.comcast.net/~oo7mike/Projects_eyecandy.htm Now this is amazing, run the Eye Candy patch and I swear you will be amazed at how detailed Unreal Tournament can really be! I wish we could get some enhanced port for all the Unreal engine games similar to the Doomsday Engine. Then we could get Unreal, Unreal: Return To Na Pali, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex, Rune, Star Trek DS9, and any other Unreal engine games a nice boost in compatibility. I have recently been replaying Rune, and it could use a better GL or Direct3D driver. Its buggy with newer cards...but I have gotten it to work okay for now.
  8. I recently installed this registry tweak that allowed me to print a directory's file listing right from Explorer. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article01-451 However, now my default folder behavior is incorrect. When I double click my computer, it opens up Explorer all ready to go at My Computer. Before it used to open a single window for My Computer with a detail pane on the left. Launching Control Panel does the same thing, and I am not sure how I fixed this, but before when I used to browse in Explorer, double clicking a sub directory in the right pane would open a new window to browse, rather than opening in the same window....DESPITE the fact I have open each folder in the same window selected in Folder Options. Is there anyway I can reset this folder behavior?
  9. It sure does, hopefully some new source ports will come along. I am quite interested in some Unreal engine ports, if Epic will ever allow the source for those games. That Unreal engine is still nice but its compatibility with newer hardware is annoying. But a port that supported all the Unreal games would be nice...actually I am going to post this rant into that CLASSICS thread...

    Unreal Engine 3

Looks very promising, lets hope that Unreal 3 and the next edition of Unreal Tournament make good use of it.
  11. I just went back through the registry to delete the keys that got put there, the reason why I didn't do so in the first place was because I went to the Folder Options and started messing with the "Folder" type setting. I may have messed it up more or something. I reinstalled that tweak, and then uninstalled it again, by removing the registry entry. It seems to have worked now which is a good thing.

I just don't know how to get glide working on those cards or GL working in a DOS environment, but I do remember it was possible.
  13. Hey great stuff Alec...managed to fix the issue, its strange how Microsoft never put this feature into Windows, (being able to print a directory's listing.) If I remember correctly the old Windows NT, and Win 3.1 "File Manager" had the option to print directory listings. This feature should be in Longhorn. MS's knowledge base also has the above mentioned "hack" to print a directory listing.

APK In theory, Heretic isn't abandonware, it can still be bought brand new from idsoftware's website. Actually the whole argument of abandonware is a gray area, since all the major companies still own the copyrights for those games. Even if you can't buy them in the store, but places like Ebay you can snag a good, clean, copy of Heretic for less than 10 dollars.

The retextured Heretic textures available on Doomsdayhq.com are very high detailed and look great with aniosoptropic filtering enabled.

Win98SE dual boot with winXP Home

Keep in mind that Windows 98 might still have issues with 768 MB of RAM, try to keep it under 512 MB if you can. I am sure there are guides on the web for it. But I used to use 98 SE and Millennium with 1 GB of RAM and I had problems continuously till I dropped the setting to 512 MB and I also had to reduce my AGP Aperture size in the BIOS to 64 MB.

    Firefox vs Internet Explorer

Firefox is just great, tabbed browsing, clean non cluttered interface, and great speed. Its just better than anything out there right now. Anyone try those M3 and M2 builds that apparently support SSE and SSE2 instructions??? http://www.moox.ws/tech/mozilla/
  20. I saw a link for this on the web and thought I would share it with everyone. http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
  21. Is there a utility that lets you add a separator line to the Windows XP Start Menu? I think it would be nice to be able to organize groups with separators much like Mozilla and managing bookmarks.
  22. Ah well, it would have been a nice addition, although I doubt MS would add it to Longhorn.
  23. I hang out at the Sharky Extreme forums, lots of people and easy to get help on a specific topic because of how the forums are layed out, there is even a highly technical PC forum here too. www.sharkyforums.com AnandTech is a pretty good source of computer/IT material, and the forums have really intelligent people. HardOCP, and FiringSquad are good too. Even though these sites focus on other aspects like gaming and benchmarks, they are still a good starting point for advice. My list of bookmarks for computer technology sites is pretty big, there are more but those are the more popular ones out there too. I also hang out at NVNews.net and Rage3D.com when I have other questions to ask about, like graphics. They also are a good source for asking about computer upgrades, because alot of computer upgrades focus on getting better graphics, and since these sites are all graphic card maniacs, its a good combination.

    Annoying things on the forum

Now I know some people aren't as tech savvy as some of us. But don't you guys find it odd that there are alot of users here with 1 post asking for a solution and then never showing up again? I run across messages about my DVD drive doesn't read DVD discs anymore? Honestly how does that work? There are so many posts about the SIMS 2. One of the threads complains about the same DX 9.0c problem, and it almost feels like the same guy/gal posting over and over again with multiple accounts..... Some of the questions about integrated graphics is really scary, and its so annoying to see a thread titled, "HELP ME NOW" or "MAJOR PROBLEMS" etc, then you go to read the post and it says I can't run NFS Underground 2 under Windows XP, please help!!!!!!! Well I can't help yah without system specs, or where the issue comes up, or driver revisions, etc, but this is the persons 1st post and then even after we reply and give them advice, they are never to be seen again. If you are new to computers then thats cool, we will help you just say "what the heck is a driver" or "patches?" we can explain easily, just don't get overly frustrated we have all been there. Yeah thats about it...
