For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!
pmistry replied to brainsoft's topic in Slack Space
That's rough, hope it turns out ok. Yeah I'll keep posting news on the source port front on this thread, they just keep getting better. I mean just look at Tenebrae, who would have thought that Quake 1 would like that? -

I think with tenebrae you need to add in the console, +mlook 1 for mouse looking, I can't remember if its implemented in the menus. As an addition, I was checking out the new Doomsday engine release, there are some new high resolution textures for Jheretic and Jhexen, the textures stay true to the original games but have been modified with Photoshop to give them a much sharper look. http://www.doomsdayhq.com/res_textures.php By the way I came across some new high resolution textures for Quake. http://switch.to/qe1m1textures And after discovering these I came to another Quake source port which is a continuation of TomazQuake, which is now pretty much dead, its called TeleJano and will probably run better than Tenebrae but won't look like Tenebrae. http://telejano.berlios.de/wiki3/ Screenshots for Telejano: http://telejano.berlios.de/wiki3/index.php/ScreenShots4.3 -
By the way, what OS did you upgrade from? If it was Windows 2000 you should be able to fix most problems. If it was Windows 98 or Windows ME, you'll have some trouble for sure.

Yeah I rejoined the ATI Camp and the Radeon 8500LE is way better then their Rage 128 and Rage Pro line, simply put the drivers are better. Though I have nothing against Nvidia the GF2MX was great for me.

I mean 8X AGP, Gigabit LAN, DDR400.... Take a look at this review of the MSI MAX 648-F http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1204

Should be a fantastic upgrade over the Geforce 2 GTS.

I've been trying to setup ME's ICS feature, got a PC with 2 LAN devices, 1 USB and 1 PCI, PCI card is for the home network (2 PC's) and the USB one hooks to the cable modem. I can share files between the 2 PC's without a problem. The problem happens after I setup ICS and run through the wizard, the system restarts with a system halted message and a BSOD. Uninstalling ICS in Safe Mode cures the problem, reinstalling ICS again causes the BSOD, does it have something to do with a USB LAN? Cuz after the BSOD I can continue into Windows but nothing is really running properly and my USB mouse doesn't work. Anybody else have this issue with WinMe? Please no sly remarks about Me's stability, I know all about it, just need to get this PC and another one running 98 SE sharing an Internet connection.
-
Thanks for the link, I figured out the problem with it, apparently its a bug in ME. To get it working correctly the first identified network adapter in your PC must be the one connecting to the Internet and the seond one connects the Home LAN. I simply switched the plugs. PCI card is my first one while my USB is the second one.

GeForce 3 Ti200 all the way, or perhaps consider an ATI offering the 8500LE/128MB DDR is real cheap too and works great on my system, good drivers as well.

I dislike Winace as well, but it is a decent format. I prefer WinRar all the way, my main archiver. Winzip and other ZIP format utilities are good but I prefer the RAR format for compressing my files and since it incorporates ZIP functionality it makes it the perfect choice.

You guys ever see this funny Windows 95 Flash animation. Its quite good and in the same line as Windows RG. http://garnux.keffo.nu/flash/windows6.swf

New P4T533 and P4 2.53 won't boot....Thanks to my GF3 ti500!
pmistry replied to Klark's topic in Hardware
Try to find an updated BIOS for the P4T5333 or try a beta BIOS. -
I do believe the 8500 is a good buy too, I got an 8500 LE and it is quite fast and has great features. In fact recent benchmarks show that it is faster than the 9000 since that card was designed to compete with the Geforce 4 MX. As for ATI drivers, they are good now, they used to suck when I had other ATI cards so thats why I switched to a GF2MX, but with an 8500LE I am quite happy.

Win 95 still has better compatibility for gaming than NT by a wide margin and by dated I mean it stopped being useful for games 2 years ago unless they were low-power strategy stuff and the like, my system is 5 years old. 100 % agreed.

Yep thanks to Tenebrae I will be replaying Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity, after finishing up Quake 2 of course. I got a couple of weeks before university starts again so this is quite excellent. -
I think any motherboard that has a Highpoint controller can be used as extra IDE connectors. If your motherboard BIOS has the option to Boot From "Future ATA" then its all good. Promise controllers, I am 100 % sure do not allow it.

Well I thought I would throw these in as well. Been playing Quake 2 all over again, and found this great source port which adds some new special effects, a nightmare skill setting, and better lighting. (Quake 2 was a tad on the dark side) Check out Quake 2 MAX here: http://modscape.telefragged.com/q2max/ Tip: Be careful when enabling Cell Shading, it tends to hard lock my system and its effect is no good. Also I found another Quake source port called Tenebrae: You can find it here: http://users.pandora.be/hollemeersch/blackrose This amazing port adds major new lighting effects. Remember the purple sky in Quake? Well it now glows a purple haze on parts of a level. There is smoke coming out of the ground and pipes, you can patch it for transparent water, the teleporters are now blue electric force fields that are transparent and they cast blue hues along the wall. Absolutely impressive. Runs fast on Geforce cards, still slow on Radeons. I am checking it out now apparently adds some transparency effects to the water, full 32-bit color too. -
No offense but even Win95 is a pain with current titles and current hardware drivers, but if your system is 2 years old I don't think it will matter that much.

Great it works for everybody, I still keep 9x around for this crap, while with some effort you can get High Stakes working, its just better under XP, and I am going to work really hard to get a full patch so we just install the damn thing under 2000.
-
Yeah I know its distributed by EA but was made by Rogue or whatever company that American McGee was working with at the time. I am mostly furious with EA developers shunning 2K support before.
-
How do I change the default paths for the Windows installation folder from "WINDOWS" to something else for Windows XP? Also how do I specify a custom profiles path instead of the default "Documents and Settings"?
-
Officially Alice does not support Windows 2000 or NT 4.0, says so in the manual, however the game will let you install on 2000 unlike some games made by other companies. [Yeah EA I am talking to you.] Also since its GL and Q3 engine it should go without a hitch. Give the new Catalyst 2.2 drivers a try for you Radeon 8500, also over at Rage3D they got some new Unofficial Beta drivers that might help you out.
-
Yeah forget running Direct3D games on Windows NT 4.0 it just won't work. OpenGL will work but sound sucks because of the lack of DirectSound support.
-
How does gaming performance compare between Windows 2000 Pro, Server and Advanced Server. I am curious, since the Server editions have more functionality do they perform a significantly slower than Professional?
-
Guys: I need a Quake III timedemo Demo for 1.31 build of Q3!

Here's a link to FiringSquad's review of the Audigy, the SB 16 PCI would probably score a bit higher in terms of CPU use compared to a Live! but then again I don't think the SB 16 PCI supports DirectSound 3D. http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/audigy/page12.asp
