Installed it and it runs fine on Windows 2000 Pro and Server along with Advanced Server. Although I never had an issue with SP2 or SP1.

Guys: I need a Quake III timedemo Demo for 1.31 build of Q3!

I highly recommend you get the Audigy, good MIDI and no problems with Windows 2000 or XP from most users. The updated SB Live drivers from Creative really fixed all the bugs that I had with XP. -

An SB16 PCI is a pretty basic sound card, you might like a new sound board, while the Live is a PCI hog and the like it adds some great EAX effects to some games and even games that don't support it. Great MIDI too for those old classic games like Heretic and Doom, compared to the cheap FM synth on the SB 16. Trust me you will be amazed by the MIDI. -
slap the hard disk in and all of your old stuff should work fine, but the problem is that your motherboard drivers and resources will reload, new hardware and old hardware drivers may have problems with each other and stuff. clean install will help you get the most performance out of your new PC.

WIN2000AS IE fail initialize 0xc0000142 with ATI Radeon8500
pmistry replied to finis's topic in Hardware
Got it fixed. Install Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server Install Sp3, Reboot Install Directx, Reboot Install IE6 if you want, Reboot Install Chipset drivers, Reboot Install Audio card drivers if necessary, Reboot. Install AMD Large Page Minimum Patch, Reboot. Install Radeon drivers, Reboot. Install ATI Control Panel, Reboot. Works fine for me now. -
Could you give me the information on how to fix that shutdown problem? I searched the net and came up with nothing.
-
Try the large page minimum patch issued by AMD. Assuming you have an AMD processor.

Here's ATI's response on the issue. Based on our experience, the issue(s) you describe are usually due to system configuration errors. We believe that the troubleshooting steps listed below may help to resolve this issue. If you own one of our Radeon products, you may consider reviewing the information at: http://www.ati.com/support/products/pc/radeon/radeonissues.html If the ATI display adapter you have is an AGP card, you should also consider reviewing the information at: http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/3179.html You may also consider using the new SEARCH ATI function on our web site. It can be found at: http://www.ati.com/search/index.html Regards, Customer Service Canada ATI Technologies, Inc. http://www.ati.com What a load of crap. I did some searching on the Rage3D forums, this registry entry could fix the problem. i have had some luck with a solution posted in a different thread . Basically try this modification to you registry. The registry entry needed is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management Add a value thus: Value name: LargePageMinimum Data type: REG_DWORD Radix: Hexadecimal Data value: ffffffff (just 8 f's) I believe this is the AMD large page minimum patch. -
The easiest way to dump it is copy it from a WinME install, its in a Movie Maker folder inside Program Files just take this folder and dump it into Windows 2000.

Well I figured out why Windows 2000 would not detect my Primary Slave HDDs full capacity. Apparently there is a bug with the ATAPI.SYS file in both SP2 and SP3, unsure about SP1, but I realized this after installing a copy of Windows 2000 Server on my PC, this install had no SP on it, and it detected the full 20 GB, but after applying SP2 or SP3 the OS detects only as 8 GB. So I took a copy of the ATAPI.SYS from the original CD of Server and put in Winnt\System32\Drivers on my SP3 Pro install and viola the system detects all 20 GB. I remember it being this file since NT4 had a problem with large IDE disks and this was the file that was changed in a patch issued by MS. I am unsure if this problem only affects VIA KX133 users, VIA chipsets in general or Maxtor DiamondMax Hard Drives only.

From benchmarks that I have seen the Live! is a PCI hog and CPU cycle eater at times. Maybe an Audigy would help? No? -
Modify the shortcut for NFS4 so that you have a -d3d1 beside it. eg. C:\Need4\Nfshs.exe -d3d1 Then run the game, the 3D setup doesn't work always in 2000. You may also want to grab this file, http://www.geocities.com/atimobility/files/hsfix.zip It will make High Stakes make use of DX7 instead of DX6, inside the ZIP is the NFS5 Direct3D driver. It made a HUGE difference in speed with my Radeon 8500 and GeForce2MX.

Now we are getting somewhere, I was fiddling around with Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server and got the exact same errors that you got, and they only occur after installing the Radeon drivers. Like you mentioned I got 00xBLAH BLAH errors when trying to open IE, Notepad, or a wave file in Explorer. My config is slightly older than yours but similar component manufacturers. ----- Hardware decription Built By ATI: Radeon 8500LE 128MB RAM ASUS K7V motherboard North Bridge Chipset: VIA KC333 South Bridge Chipset: VIA 686A AMD Athlon Classic 750 512MB PC133 SDRAM ----- graphics-related BIOS & setting --- BIOS: ASUS version 1008-D (latest) --- Setings: Graphics Aperature Size: 128MB AGP Capbility: 4X Mode AGP Drive Strength AUTO AGP Performance Control: Disabled AGP Fast Write Control: Disabled Video Memory Cache Mode: UC PCI/VGA Palette Snoop: Disabled ----- Software installed & Drivers Windows2000 Advenced Server English Version ServicePack3 Tried without SP3 as well, ie. no SP Internet Explorer 6 (also tried 5, but not working either, same here) DirectX 8.1 --- Drivers: VIA chipset 4 in 1 drivers version 4.35v (the most stable for my old chipset, and work completely fine with Win2k Pro) I do not get any of these issues with Professional so its a Server issue, I think I will give ATI tech some email. -

Heh, if I disable sound my score jumps to 101.3, hmmm, if I set it to low quality I get around 70 or so just like high quality. Therefore, would a better sound card give me better frame rates? Right now I am using a Sound Blaster Live! Value. What about the Audigy? -
I recently installed a copy of Win2k Server and got weird memory error messages with it, however my Win2k Pro install doesn't give me those errors so its just not Pro.
-
I've been fiddling around with Windows 2000 Server edition and been having weird problems everywhere. Even after installing when I try to launch some programs I get weird application errors like this application cannot execute due to reference error [insert hex code here]. If I restart the PC the errors go away but come back later on say a later reboot. I tried with and without SP3. The whole server OS feels really unstable, more so than Millennium. I also got some out of memory error messages when trying to launch Media Player. Also I tried opening some wave files off the hard disk and Windows said the file was corrupt, but I rebooted into Pro and all was good. None of these errors occur in Pro. Also for some reason on the logon screen the Shutdown command is greyed out, why is that? Also Win2k server correctly identifies my Primary Slave 20GB HDD, where as Win2k Pro only picks it up as 8GB.

I think this forum is filled with good users and that there is no need for mudslinging here.

Only some newer motherboards don't have them, they are becoming obsolete, the new line of legacy free Abit boards do not have PS/2, Serial, Game, Parallel or Floppy connectors anymore. Aside from the floppy disk connector the rest are useless as people upgrade their hardware, printers and scanners are now all USB, joysticks and gamepads are USB, PCI modems do not use serial ports, keyboard and mouses are all USB, and they will work in DOS or Safe mode since the BIOS will automatically emulate PS/2 mode for them. I actually used a USB mouse in Windows NT 4.0 the other day, it picked it up as a PS/2 device. These things are just useless now, they hog IRQs and do not conform to Plug and Play specifications. It is good to get rid of them finally.

Play a game at 640 resolution and then turn on AF, AA you should see some major improvements. -
If its any consolation but the WinME version works fine if you dump it in Win2k.

Saw this over at HardOCP, http://www.hardocp.com and Rage3D http://www.rage3d.com Please read the following statement from Microsoft, "WHQL will no longer accept certain submissions". Beginning 01 July 2002, at 12:01 A.M. PST, WHQL will no longer accept submissions for all hardware devices and systems for the following operating systems. This includes all submission types for all devices and systems. Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Windows NT 4.0 Server As a reminder, WHQL previously stopped accepting submissions for Windows 98 Gold in the latter part of 1999. This shows that MS is beginning to phase out Win98, which is still quite the popular OS among gamers. I think after DirectX 9, Windows 98 will no longer receive future updates of DirectX anyways just like Windows 95 and DirectX 8.0. I am not ranting here, just wanted some people to know that 98's life is nearing its end....but then there is always Millennium

Seriously --anything wrong with using XP's compatibility DB?
pmistry replied to RedStar's topic in Games
I agree with you RedStar, I really wish either MS or some game companies [yeah EA I am talking to you] would release some unofficial patches or something so we can have a hassle free install of some games on 2000. A quick question a game like High Stakes, how does XP not have a problem installing it but 2000 does? How do I get it to install without fiddling with it, just wanna pop the CD in and install it and play it. -
I decided to get a Maxtor ATA 100 adapter and hook up my ATA 100 hard disks with it. Right now my motherboard only supports ATA 66. I booted up WinXP with my card installed and installed the drivers for it. I shut down and hooked up my hard disks to it, a WD (Maxtor) 80GB ATA100 and a Maxtor (Slave) ATA-100 20GB. I also configured my PC to boot from SCSI. The ATA card detects the hard disks without a problem but the system won't boot. I then tried to boot from a floppy disk and again the computer won't boot past the bios screen. I removed the ATA card and plugged the drives back into the motherboard and everything works fine. So I then hooked my secondary hard disk into the Adapter in IDE2 and left my primary WD drive in the motherboard and the PC took a really long time to boot up. There must be some sort of conflict between the 2 IDE bus masters, anyone have a solution to this? oh btw, I have a VIA Chipset and I am pretty this is a VIA problem.

How do I this? What files do you need, is this using WinXP's compatibility database inside Win2k? -
Yep I set it to 192 and voila the loading now works. Good one Alec.
